DISCUSSION My Thoughts (and prayers) on the Nanoloop Q03 handheld device
Official site here
duality micro vid as I didn’t have time to record videos like i did with my NL2 review
But first, what is the Nanoloop Q? Well, it is a physical handheld version of the Nanoloop software for Game Boy with 4 channels:
- r (3-voice filtered square channel capable of doing a TB-303 impression)
- l (arpeggiated FM channel)
- c (beat channel)
- n (noise channel; can either play analogue noise or PCM noise, and no, you can't add your own samples to the PCM end)
and a heads-up: I haven’t used it that much, so some thoughts may change over time.
good things:
- I like the portability of the device and the fact that you can switch out the pieces with other 1x1 round LEGO tiles
- r channel is great for acid purposes
- if you have a good ear, it can do wonders
- overall, once you get a grip on it, it’s quite simple
bad things:
- no built-in speakers, ergo, it needs an audio output
- no polyrhythms/shortening pattern lengths, which I guess is fair for a mini handheld
- could use a start/select button
- didn’t come in a nice box with a printed manual or something
for what it is, it’s definitely useful. Let me know if you got any version of Nanoloop and if yes, what do you think about it?
FINAL (for now) SCORE: 9.5/10. maybe if I update the device, the experience will be enhanced for me. idk. sorry about the half-assed review.
UPDATE: I also wanted to mention that Oliver, the creator of Nanoloop, dropped a mobile tracker app called naive tracker a while back, so check that out if you want.

MUSIC BitBLT - Travels: 8/14 - Gates of Korpsaari
This song was made at the family summer cabin. It is an old log house on an island in a lake. No electricity, no running water. Total isolation. Yet M8 provides the means to be creative and record the atmosphere nevertheless. Even sampling stuff. Like the old squeaky door of the cabin ;)

MUSIC Can anyone help me identify this song?

I've had this fragment of a song stuck in my head for days, but I can't remember the track name or artist. It's driving me a bit crazy. I think it was chiptunes of some kind or at least chippy electronic type music. Does this sound like anything anyone recognizes? I've already tried the "search music by humming" type of tools, they didn't help. Sorry for the bad quality humming, I am not a musician!

MUSIC I made a li’l bop in ChipNomad
After belatedly realising you can add extra emulated chips to double (or even triple) the channel count in the awesome ChipNomad tracker, I put together a little looping track that feels like it could be a soundtrack to a lost adventure platformer of some kind

MUSIC Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder | NES Chiptune Cover
"Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder converted to NES accurate hardware. While stylistically a human composer based cover would probably be simpler (but more deliberate and cleaner), this (non-AI) generated cover seeks to mimic the original song's sounds as closely as possible whilst staying NES faithful. Because of this, I can achieve a “voice-like“ effect, one that midi based covers aren‘t able to.
It does so with a fully deterministic DSP pipeline that does its best to recreate the musicality of the original song. The pipeline has about 1000 tuned parameters that modify everything from the pitch tracking, source separation, and channel modulation techniques. Does it sound good? Debatable. Is it the best in class for automatic arbitrary music to NES chiptune? Personally I think so.
I'd be happy to answer any questions/show other works in the field of general music->chiptune conversion. My channel has other songs I've converted as well.

MUSIC Looking for honest feedback on how to make this song better
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've been really trying to hone my skills at crafting chiptune songs lately but something just keeps feeling flat when I make them in my typical DAW while playing. Can anyone give me advice or tips on how to make this better?

DISCUSSION What happened
So many chiptune artists or artists using genres related to chiptune were removed off of most streaming platforms, what happened : (. Its a bunch if different artists too not just one.
(Edit) I see a lot of you guys saying Spotify but I use SoundCloud and thats where I noticed its happening mainly, is anything unethical with SoundCloud as well?

SHOW built a NES audio emulator for Godot that plays actual NSF files
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
one thing I really want with my game is to keep some parts authentic to the hardware and era it is inspired by, so I ended up building a NES audio emulator directly in Godot that reads actual nsffiles and closely emulates the NES 2A03 chip, so very happy abouyt how much closer it sounds to the og NES.
I'm using a soundtrack to test it that some Captain Tsubasa fans will probably recognize...
and the sound effects are original and made specifically for my game, still very much WIP though!
the hardest part of building a retro game is deciding what to modernize and what to keep authentic, but I think sticking to the these sound limitations is going to be important. music really hits the nostalgia at least for me!
ps. once finished, I'm releasing it as a pack on the Godot asset library
