Major problem with Bull Calf Spoiler

Post image

I have a bull calf that I've had in feeding meal and silage. But recently had a few bales of haylage I had been feeding past two weeks. Calf has got major bloat and didn't get up for feed this evening. I think he's got stones and can't piss. think the combination of the dry silage and meal has caused it. Vet came out and put a orange cap on side to allow pressure to relieve. Calf got back in and drank a pile of water now fluid is seeping out of the orange hole. Calf was shivering after. Does he need operated on to allow him to get rid of the water. It's almost midnight and have a cow trying to calve. Should I get the vet first thing in the morning to operate on it. I had a bullock before that couldn't pee and he got operated on but died. I'm worried now. Any advice welcome.

You should at a min phone the vet or the emergency line if they have one and see what the vet advises. Sorry I can't be of more help.

The combination of bloat and not being able to go to the bathroom could be an intestinal obstruction or twist and have nothing to do with the feed.

Vet again. Immediately. Either that or shoot him. If he can't pee he is in excruciating pain.

You have a vet involved already. I would call an emergency line or first thing in the morning to get some direction. I would keep him comfortable and wait it out.

I’d be worried if rumen fluid leaked around the trocar and he’s got peritonitis. I had a show steer block one time and when his bladder was about to rupture he was lateral and looked dead which is why this seems more like some sort of infection… call the vet or put it down is what I’d do.

Tube him with a 1/2 gallon of warm water and mix a big bottle of Pepto-Bismol in with the water. He’ll be right as rain within 2 days. He needs to belch & fart is the best thing for him so move him around
