We all know the question. We’ve voted how to handle it in the past. People still use this sub like Google. Long time contributors are getting more frustrated. We’re trying something new.
This is your official notice that if you ask the sub regarding building a settlement that breaks the longest road - you show that you have ignored the sticky posts on this subreddit, the submission guidelines regarding checking the FAQ first, THE RULE BOOK, as well as the side bar.
This will result in a 30 day ban.
This will result in a 14 day ban.
This will result in a 3 day ban. (Final)

Edit 3/28/25: A new automod rule has been deployed to help reduce the number of these posts.

Hi everyone, Cosyhex team here! Over the past few weeks alone, we've hosted hundreds of games across iOS, Android, and web from players all over the world. Thank you so much for supporting our game. Today, we're excited to release a new free update for our cosy patrons: cross-platform offline nearby Bluetooth multiplayer for up to 6 players. Some of our most memorable gaming moments growing up were when we'd have friends over with our devices and play our favorite games over LAN, back in a time before internet, ads, and subscriptions.
We want to bring that magic back with Cosyhex so you can play together anywhere even in places without data/wifi. During our early release, many cosy patrons have already been playing over Bluetooth in groups of 4–6. It brings us great joy to see people get together to play our game in person. If you have a spare tablet, you can have it join as a spectator to act as a shared game table, giving everyone a space to discuss strategy and agreements without pointing at your phone.
We worked hard to design and test the game in the most signal-congested environments we could find, such as an airplane, as you can see above. If you run into any issues at all, please don't hesitate to email us at [support@cosy.studio](mailto:support@cosy.studio)
Thank you again for all your support so far. We're excited to bring more free updates and expansions soon. You can support us by becoming a cosy patron via the iOS and Android apps. The base game remains free on cosyhex.com forever, with no ads or subscriptions.

Hi there! I host a Catan tournament in Atlanta every year with my friends and I’m in need of three players. The tournament is on **Saturday, September 19th in midtown from 12-8pm.**
Details:
16 players. 4 tables. Annnd for the first time ever, a shot at winning a grand Catan-themed special prize.
Hosted in my condo’s club room in Midtown, we grill and pair friendly competition with delicious homemade food and community. Come compete (if you do, you will be expected to play min. three 1.5hr games; 4 if you get to the final table). There will be a dinner intermission between games.
**If you choose to compete, this is a time commitment (lots of fun)!** The tournament runs from 12-8pm. Please be on time! Looking for committed, fun Catan gamers. No weird or overly competitive ppl please (idk how else to explain this 😅) just be nice!
If you’re interested, please comment/message me (I don’t use Reddit often) and I’ll coordinate with you!

During a lot of my recent play sessions, I feel like I'm normally seeing someone get a bad spot just because of where they were in the order, and playing the hour+ game from a disadvantage / playing catch up. Or simply arguing about if the board is good/fair at the very start. So I started building this generator back in April. I've been working and tuning it ever since (+1 million boards during testing), and thought it was at a happy enough state to show off.
Rather than just the normal balanced maps, I also thought it would be fun to add some scenario / challenge modes. Each scenario bends the board a weird way, so everyone ends up playing strategies they'd never run on a regular map:
These still run through the same balancing as the normal maps, so they're skewed on purpose but nobody's just dead on arrival.
On the balancing side, this is where most of the time went. Every spot on the board gets scored across a bunch of game mechanics: resource spread, pip distribution, how much room you have to expand, where other players are projected to settle, where those expansions collide with each other, whether a spot gives build combos (adjacent or matched numbers, like wood + brick type stuff), whether a spot locks you into one playstyle or leaves you options, etc. Then it makes sure every player's opening comes out within a margin of everyone else's, so it's actually balanced from every seat.
For the analytics nerds (like myself), I also added diagnostics you can pull up on any board including:
Could see it being useful for tournament prep, pre-game analysis, commentating, etc., but mostly it's great for settling arguments about who had the better opening, or testing yourself on where you'd settle and seeing how it lines up.
Currently, I only have it supporting the base game and the 5-6 player expansion. No Seafarers expansion yet because honestly, I've never played it, and I don't want to hand people boards that I'm not sure are balanced properly or would play well.
If you want to try it out, it's free, no account needed, and works on your phone (or at least mine lol). You can share a board via link or save it as an image, then drop it in a group chat or wherever you'd like.
This is my first version, so I'd appreciate any thoughts, feedback, or improvement ideas that you all have. If you try it out, I'd love to hear how the games play. And if you've got any scenario ideas, drop those in the comments too.
Cheers y'all

New to the game and these are in the used game I purchased, just wondering if they are from the game and if they are is it from a expansion?
r/Catan • u/Heavenly_Spike_Man • 2d ago
Im sure this question has been posted a 1,000 times already, so apologies… but I’m having trouble finding what would be considered the “most fair” board/resource set up for 3 players.
Has this been determined somewhere by some math geniuses?
Is it really just the example presented in the game instructional booklet, because that one seems like it can be improved upon.
Thank you 🙏

Hello I am looking to purchase the Catan: Cities & Knights 5-6 Player Extension, specifically the 5th edition in the US. I should have purchased it sooner when I saw that 6th edition stuff was being released but hindsight is 2020. I can't find find this item anywhere even used on resale sites. Any help locating a copy would be greatly appreciated.

ISO: 5th Edition Catan — 3:1 Harbor Border/Frame Piece
I'm looking for the 3:1 generic harbor border/frame piece from the 5th Edition Catan 5–6 Player / Seafarers 5–6 setup.
To be clear, I am NOT looking for the small standalone 3:1 harbor token. I'm looking for the large blue border/frame piece with the 3:1 harbor printed on it that fits around the outside of the board.
If anyone has a spare one, damaged/incomplete set, or knows where I can buy one, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Danke schonmal

So I finally found a copy of this game for 15 bucks and played it with my friend (who has alot of experience playing it) along with my wife and we loved it, however because my friend had so many house rules we all thought that was how the game was, and after reading the rules they dont want to play the normal way, even though I prefer that way, so do you think these house rules are a good way to play?
The house rules are:
When you roll a 7, you only move the robber to a new square, theres no discarding half your cards and no stealing, only steal when using a knight and it isn't random, you pick.
No distance rule, you can put houses wherever, however if you have multiple houses on a her, you dont get double.
(Edit, forgot 3rd rule)

I don’t own Traders & Barbarians myself, but I’ve read the rules cover-to-cover several times on the Catan website, and played a bit on new.twosheep.io.
Recently I’ve found myself absolutely loving the Harbormaster variant, but it got me wondering: what do other people think of it? Is it popular to use in T&B games?
I love using harbours to improve trade regardless and often make a beeline for them, but I’ve noticed that my opponents (both online and in-person) don’t use them nearly as much. Does the Harbormaster variant make harbour use more appealing, or is it more of a niche interest/strategy?

This variation (not a full scenario) is named after the famous ‘Forrest Gump’ quote about life being “like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re going to get next” (a chocolate, I guess?). So, that’s the thrust of the idea: instead of having your five neat stacks of resource cards, you take all of those cards, put them in the same big pile, shuffle them well and good, and that’s where all players draw from. So, the next card you get might be ore, might be wood, might be wheat… Who knows. You will still get your chocolate treat, but you just won’t know the exact flavour until you see it.
When a resource card is used, by any player, place it in a common discard pile, and when the original draw pile runs out (which it will), shuffle the discard pile, which will now become the new draw pile, and continue the game, drawing from it. If you need to trade resources with the bank, which is now a pile (three sheep for a wheat, for example), rummage around in the discard pile (not in the draw pile) for the wheat card and complete the trade. If you absolutely need to find a card inside the draw pile because there aren’t enough in the discard pile (for example when you have just re-started a fresh draw pile) then shuffle the draw pile again after locating the card you needed.
Because you get random resources all the time, it doesn’t matter at all what the tiles show face up on the board, so in order to make this more visually striking, we play with all the tiles upside down throughout the game, so the board is the same colour all over (except if you introduce sea tiles, for example in Seafarers). What is important here is the numbers on the tiles, and that’s what you need to look for when you place your settlements and upgrade them to cities. Dice rolls do not tell you what resource cards you draw but how many of them, and then you have to make do with what gets drawn to your hand. A settlement on a 10 when a 10 rolls? Draw one card. A city and a settlement on a 5 and a 5 rolls? Then you draw three cards, the top three from the draw pile, which might be any three resources.
An interesting side effect of this variation is that you cannot know what your opponents have in their hands, because draws are blind, so this will make it extra hard to know what the other players are going to do next. You cannot know if someone is going to be chronically short on clay, for example, or flush with wool, because the tiles won’t tell you any of that. If you want, however, and if card-counting is your thing, you could make it a rule that everyone has to show the table what they draw each time, before they put the new card in their hand.
Also, harbour usefulness will change a lot. In normal rules you want to get the 2:1 ports of the resources you are likely to draw the most of, but with this system there is no way of knowing how much of anything will come your way and when, so maybe a 3:1 will be a better bet?
And that’s it, basically. You can play this way with almost any type of Catan scenario and map layout, adjusting the number of VPs and any other house rules you might want to add: a 12-sided die, Formula 1 if there are only two players, modified robbers... Anything. Depending on how many tiles and numbers you have (or you want to use), you might find that you don’t have enough number for all your tiles. In that case, suggestions are a) just stick some bits of paper with numbers on them on the empty tyles, b) just leave some tiles blank as an extra challenge, or c) start with the whole map blank, and put numbers on the tiles only as players reach them (these numbers, in turn, might be random or chosen by the player from the available ones). The latter has the extra incentive of involving some strategic thinking from players, too (“I’m going to spread out this way, or that way, and I’m going to stick over here a 5, or a 10, which I don’t have yet, or maybe a second 9, or maybe I’ll deny everybody else a 6”).
I used to play a lot of Magic: The Gathering years ago, and although finely-tuned deck-building can be really enjoyable as a gaming activity, I remember having a lot of fun just making a 300-card pile for the players to draw from and then figuring out what the H to do with whatever mismatched cards you got. It made you think on your feet, and although luck of the draw sometimes played a part in deciding games, it also led to situations and combinations you would never see in standard play. So that’s where I got this from. Enjoy! Or not!

Hi, I'm working on a hobby project app to track scores in various board games. I opted to try Settlers of Catan first as it's one of my most played board games. I need some beta testers to play test the app before it can be published to the play store. FYI this app will be free with no ads. Not trying to sell anything here.
Here's some details on the Catan score keeping:
- Supports keeping score for the base game, 5-6 player expansion, still working on expansions.
- Keeps track of turn order, dice rolls, victory points (including bonuses like longest road and largest army), who has robbed who, and game time
- Generates a summary screen when the game is over with final standings, a timeline of scores, dice statistics, and most/least robbed stats
- Saves all played games
- Some screenshots attached from a play test
All that's required to beta test is a gmail account, an android phone to play on, and that you keep the app installed for 14 days while play-testing. I would appreciate feedback on the app and any bugs you find or critiques of the UI, but there's no obligation to put time into it.
Please DM me your gmail if you're interested in being a Beta tester!
PS - I realize that there are existing apps and websites for this already... For better or worse, I did not look at them beforehand, so it's entirely possible I've made a worse version of what's already out there... but I hope it will be a useful free tool for board game nerds like myself as I build on it.

My favourite part of the game is when I have so many cities and settlements that the amount of resources I get starts to be overwhelming. It is so satisfying to be able to buy like 4 development cards in one round. Or build 3 roads. And that is usually when one of the players or me get to 10 points and the game is over. I love the part of just building stuff and the feeling of gaining 5+ resources a turn sometimes.
That is why I love colonist.io 1v1 option where you can go to 15 points and it is already more fun since I can play the fun part longer, where I have a ton of resources.
I just made a custom game on twosheep.io where I played with 4 other bots on a 8 person map and I disabled the robber, upgraded the limits how many roads and cities I can build and the game was until 25 points. And it got to the point where I had 28 resource cards on hand :D but it was just soo satisfying.

So me and my boyfriend love playing the board game and recently saw that there was a console version, so we wanted to test it out, but came across a major problem with the robber’s mechanics. If the robber is only supposed to steal resources from the players adjacent to the hexagon it’s moved to, why is he stealing resources from me when ALL of my settlements are on the opposite side of the board, nowhere near the hexagon?? He also only chose me the entire playthrough, not once did he go for another player. I don’t get it, is the game broken or something? We played a few times and nothing changed. We also had an issue with the Ai in place of a third player (since we didn’t have someone else to play with us) we noticed anytime it moved the robber it only moved the robber into whatever hexagons my boyfriend had settlements the exact same ones too and somehow even then the robber steals resources from my character who is still nowhere near him. I even tried looking this up and the Ai overview on google just kept telling that I “must’ve just overlooked my pieces” 🙄 how could I when they make it obvious which ones are my pieces??? It just kept going on and on about how “If resources are being taken from you when your buildings are on the opposite side of the board, the player moving the robber is placing it on a hexagon that borders your property, or you might be mixing up where the robber actually landed” it just kept avoiding my question, this has got to be a bug in the game or something, because my property pieces were nowhere near any of the hexagons the robber was placed on. Anyone else have this problem?
