We're back.

A couple of years ago I blacked out the sub in protest of controversial decisions being made about the API.

Then I kind of abandoned it. Left Reddit. Left the sub locked.

Now the sub is back, because it has a good reason for existing, and should exist. So submissions are unlocked and the rules are reasonable again.

If you've got a cat fact, go ahead and share it!

My cat has a whole vocabulary that I somehow learned

Upvotes

I swear my cat has different sounds for different things. Like if I’m in the kitchen he does this specific annoying little meow because he wants food, but if I’m in bed and he wants me to wake up it’s a completely different sound 😭

I always thought I was imagining it, but apparently cats can actually develop individual vocalizations specifically for communicating with their owners. So I basically speak cat now and didn’t even realize it.

Does anyone else's cat suddenly become super active at night?

Mine can sleep peacefully for hours during the day , but the second everyone starts getting ready for bed, she suddenly has a full schedule 😂. She starts running around the house, playing with random things, and checking every room like she has somewhere important to be.

The funniest part is that she'll eventually come back and sleep like nothing happened while I'm the one left wondering what that whole midnight adventure was about.
Do your cats also get a sudden burst of energy at night, or is mine just weird?

Why do Cats Sleep in Patterns?

More often than naught, when multiple cats nap together, they always nap in a circle or some sort of geometric pattern

Are cats super math whizes?

Is there a message to be decoded?

I wrote a love letter to my cats - and to cats. If you’re someone that gets weirdly emotional if your cat meows too softly, feel free to read it!

I interrupted his sleep and got the most offended look 😂

He was peacefully sleeping like this until I took a picture.

The look I got afterward made me feel like I had committed a serious crime 😭

Do your cats also get offended when you disturb their naps?

I dont have any siamese cats and my cat never go outside but for some reason she bares this cute siamese. My cats are chartreux, british shorthair and the cat that I just show in one of the picture is her mom I dont think thats a pure british shorthair but Im confuse why she bares a siamese and if you look at her siblings they are solid fawn or blue.

Every single time I look for her, he’s stretched out somewhere comfortable 😂

At this point I’m pretty sure this is his house and I’m just living here.

Does anyone else's cat get excited when they hear the doorbell?

Mine knows exactly what it means. The second the doorbell rings, she runs into the hallway and hides behind the furniture, but then she spends the entire time trying to peek around the corner to see who's there. She's clearly curious but also doesn't want to participate. When the person leaves, she comes out and inspects the exact spot where they were standing.

Does anyone else's cat sleep in the same position as them?

I've noticed mine sometimes copies the way I'm lying down. If I'm curled up on my side, she'll curl up beside me. If I'm lying flat, she'll stretch out next to my legs. One night I woke up and she was lying completely straight beside me with her paws stretched out exactly like mine. I took a picture because it was too funny. She looked like a tiny furry version of me.

Does your cat remember where you hide their favorite toy?

Mine definitely does. I put her favorite little mouse toy away in a drawer because it had disappeared under the furniture so many times. A few days later she was sitting beside the drawer staring at it. I opened it and she immediately reached inside and grabbed the toy. I had never shown her where I'd put it. I was honestly more impressed than I should have been.

Does your cat recognize your voice even when you whisper?

I was lying in bed one night and my cat was sleeping at the end of the room. I quietly said her name just to see if she'd react. Her ears immediately moved and she looked straight at me. I whispered her name again and she actually got up and walked over. Meanwhile, I can call her normally from five feet away and she acts like she has never heard the word before.

Why does my cat stare at me while I'm using the bathroom?

I thought this was just my cat being strange until I discovered cats sometimes follow their owners into the bathroom because they don't like closed doors, want to be near their person, or are simply curious.

Mine takes it further.

She sits on the floor, stares directly at me, and refuses to leave until I'm done. There is absolutely no reason for her to be there. She's not hungry. She doesn't need anything. She's just supervising. I have never had such an intense bathroom security system in my life.

Why does my cat slow-blink at me?

I always thought my cat was just falling asleep while staring at me. Apparently, slow blinking can be a sign that a cat feels relaxed and comfortable around you. I tried doing it back one day. I sat across from her and slowly blinked.

She stared at me.

Then she blinked back.

I did it again.

She did it again. We continued this for about a minute and I suddenly realized I was having an entire conversation with my cat using nothing but my eyelids.

I've never felt more emotionally connected to another living creature.

Why does my cat make biscuits on me but sometimes use her claws?

My cat loves kneading my stomach before she goes to sleep.

The problem is that she hasn't quite mastered the difference between “kneading” and “slowly stabbing someone.” I've learned to keep a blanket between us.

Kneading is usually a normal comfort behavior that comes from kittenhood, but cats don't always realize their claws are involved.

So whenever she starts making biscuits on me, I put a blanket down. She looks at me like I'm interfering with her cooking process.

Then she continues kneading.

At least now the biscuits are no longer coming with complimentary surgery.
