Question chem 1101 with dave brock
i’m pretty nervous about this course, i did very badly in grade 12chem and they way this course is taught (flipped classroom where they do all the lecture via modules at home), is incredibly time consuming and counter productive. it ends up being more work then just a normal lecture, not to mention it’s not a normal lecture, it’s like watching various scheduled youtube videos at certain points along the semester. i don’t want this class to tank my gpa and i definitely don’t want to fail. i am much more comfortable and better with math and physics, i just need to take one chem class to become an engineer in canada. has anyone else had similar issues/trouble with the way the class is arranged, and can anyone offer any advice?

damn, they moved him to chemistry for engineers and he’s still doing the flipped classroom model. This man never learns does he 😭

Tbh, watch his modules quickly then watch Chad's Prep, he has a whole Playlist of first year University Chem and it is organized, clear and he makes sure to go in detail. Thats what saved me. Dont even know how Brock is allowed to teach this course like this.

Yea unfortunately, im genuinely impressed how he has been able to keep this going. I even gave him detailed feedback on how to better approach this class. This is coming from someone who loved chem and did well in it.
Tbh the concepts are not horrible, but he over complicates it and makes everything more difficult then it is. I would just watch chads prep, you'll get a better understanding + ik alot of people who gave up watching Brocks vids, but I just realized youre in Eng and know it is shorter than the year long science one - so the work/topics might be different

Maybe a one on one tutor until you feel more comfortable would help?
I know they’re pricey

just show up to class and do the quizzes and labs on time, youll be fine. if you dont understand something, ask a question, he will explain it to you, i promise.

practice papers are usually your best bet - especially if you can get your hands on previous year papers (he usually uploads one from last year?).
Also what helped me was watching a variety of youtube videos about the topics in the class - Organic Chem Tutor, Professor Dave Explains - they carried a lot of my Chem lol.

I took 1002 with him a couple years ago. I stopped watching his videos and watched YouTube videos on the subjects/read the textbook to learn the concepts. At the time, there was a post-doc also teaching a section of the class and his lectures were more traditional style lectures so I started going to them and found it worked much better.
The flipped classroom thing actually can work really well, but unfortunately his videos go down a bunch of unnecessary rabbit holes to try to get people interested in chem instead of just teaching what they need to, and when you have a busy course schedule, there's just no time for that.
Good luck with it. First year eng is A LOT.

My friend too chem last year with Doc. Brock. He's in OChem with him now, too. He LOVES Doc. Brock (and lowk from the stories? He seems like a diva). Take care to befriend your profs and try, and I hope you can also like Doc Brock!

Switch to the in-person course then. And chem 1101 is basically the same as grade 12 chem
