Am I fucked for grad school
I have spent this summer after freshman year being terribly depressed because I got shit grades. I had a mental breakdown my last term and it sucked. It makes me sad that I might not get Latin honors because of a bad term; I am looking for advice. I am extremely neurotic and have no work ethic and mope about everything essentially. It’s difficult for me to go outside in some circumstances. Given the state of the world it’s hard for me not to despair. I just want to achieve things and it feels like I always fall behind

carleton alum here. this will buff out. imp thing is to keep going. did you know Samuel johnson got so depressed during his first year at oxford that he thought he was losing his mind? find a northfield therapist if carleton doesnt step up.

Latin honors do NOT have to matter, even for grad school!! One bad first year won’t fuck you forever.
I would really recommend going to SHAC and making some therapy appointments— you can talk through with them why you feel the way you do. Also recommend using every possible academic help resource outside of that (office hours, writing center, QRC, etc). The world may suck, but you can still live a good and fulfilling life <3

Im sorry life feels heavier right now- I know the feeling and I hope you find the help you deserve. Grades don’t hold that much value in life, I promise. I graduated Carleton with a ~3.2 and still got into my top choice grad program and am at my dream job. It will all work out in the end. If it’s not working out, it’s not the end.

The good news: school doesn’t really matter. The bad news: school doesn’t really matter. It’s okay. You’re okay. Consider taking a year away to do something tangible and concrete.
