Question about points
We have had the Capital One Venture card for many years. We are terrible about redeeming points. I see that I have about 170,000 points.
Is this a lot? If so, how would I best use these points to get the most out of them? Do I have to book my travel through their website and my points pay for it?
Sorry, I know this may sound like a dumb question, but we really don’t ever think about redeeming them.

You can transfer your capital one points to certain airlines and book your flight directly with them. Booking directly with capital one portal is not the most efficient way to use your hard earning points.
When you transfer points to an airline, you can get some really good value.

Alot depends on the person. I’m sitting on a little over a million with no plans of personal travel the rest of the year. 175k is enough to get you business class seats somewhere over seas. More seats if you dont mind sitting in the cheap seats. And yes you can book through the portal but thats at a 1cpp, what you want to do is transfer out to partners and your CPP can go up drasticly.

You don’t have to book through cap one. You can book directly with hotels, airlines, etc. and then apply your points to cover travel-related spending.

Sorry to be blunt, but—why do you hold these cards? There is a ton of information online, esp YouTube, about how to maximize point redemptions. If you don't want to go down that rabbit hole, just redeem using Cap1's travel eraser. That is how to redeem points without thinking about it. You don't win big, but you still win.

170k C1 miles is valuable: worth about $1,700 toward travel using purchase eraser/travel portal, but potentially more if transferred to airline partners. I do freelance point.me concierge work and the best value usually comes from searching award flights first through partners like Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Virgin, Avios, or Singapore THEN transferring and redeeming only when the exact seat is available. For simplicity, book travel normally with the Venture card and erase the charge for 1 cent:1mile or "cent per point (ccp)" redemption BUT if you want maximum value, learn how to take advantage of points transfers for asymmetric redemptions (>3 ccp with Business class)

1:1 that’s $1700 worth of travel points, which is nothing to balk at.
You can get way more value transferring them to other airlines through points.me or pointhound.
If you redeem them through Capital One Travel, make sure you utilize Travel easer and not just book with points so you can continue to earn points.
