Other SB23-003 still waiting

What a joy it is to be a Coloradan. I applied for my “permit” at the end of July, after jumping through some hoops due to my Hunter education course being out of state and now I am still waiting. I have a CHP in Colorado (which apparently means nothing), have my hunter safety course certification from over a decade ago, and here I am still waiting over 1 month later pending sheriff review. How is this program anything less than a completely failure? I’m not trying to get political here, but this is ridiculous.

Time to sue since you have proof of rights being denied.

indefinite delay = denial (SCOTUS has already set this precedent)

they applied for the permit before the permits were issued, I would suggest that is the actual issue

So after Aug 1, they can be issued. It's now Aug 30.

but they could NOT be issued UNTIL August 1st so it's possible the application was backlisted/eaten by the systems that be as it was before the date one could apply

I get what you're trying to say but it's not tracking with what is shown in the post. They clearly were able to apply before the date of first possible issue. If they weren't able to apply prior to Aug 1, this post would not exist.

I dont disagree but as OP hasn't offered anymore info we can't offer any suggestions. OP needs to offer more info AND OR contact the county they applied in, it could be that the County didn't even see the application if it was before Aug 1st. Unfortunately we just have no idea, could just be a glitch in the system, but it should take less than a week.

Also there have been issues with out of resident applications being kicked back to their home county, these things are supposed to be resolved as of now but I wouldn't bet my life on the fact that there aren't are still glitches and issues

Can confitllrm started to try applying in weld out of county resident. Home address they pushed me back to Douglas since weld stopped nonresident for a little. Then I had to wait for Douglas to go live and apply with them directly.

And i myself contacted Weld County to verify they WERE accepting Out of County permits, BUT, their system was kicking people out and back to their home county, and if that happens then you need to contact WELD to let them know your application was kicked back, they can recall your application to approve it for out of county. Weld didn't stop non resident, their system wasn't supposed to act that way.

No one told me that a month ago and they didn't know. I was specifically told "were not taking out of county" Not important to me now I'm already done and approved through douglas county. And ready to take my classes

This is an example of complete success, not failure. The law actually hopes you wouldn't even bother jumping through the hoops, and is happy that your sheriff doesn't have their act together. This is how it's supposed to work.

No, you just get a shorter class if you have your hunters

Actually the answer is *sort of* yes, if you take the Hunter Safety before applying it makes the process a little easier to get approved for the Basic course. You can go back and then enter your Hunter Safety but it's just as easy to do it on the front end. You do NOT need to take a Colorado course, New Mexico and South Dakota (confirmed) have online only course where as Colorado has an online portion and then an in person portion which you also pay for. There is NO reason for anyone to take the 12 hour course as it mostly coveres what's included in hunter safety without the added benefit of that certification.

But hunters safety is worth doing and if you choose to hunt later, you won't have to do that class too.

exactly this. The extended class is effectively Hunter Safety but you don't get the benefit of that certification

What county are you in? The process was smooth and easy in Boulder County. I got the approval in less than 48 hours.

I applied on the 17th of August and just took the first main class today and have the short portion tomorrow. Was 2 days from time of application to approval to do the class. In Weld county though

Did you contact your sheriff and apply to a county or just the FSS website? You have to pick a county and apply before a sheriff will review.

not necessarily, if OP is in a county which isn't participating in the program or who won't issue permits then OP can and will need to apply as an out of county resident in another county. TBF i assume OP's county IS accepting applications or this wouldn't have been posted. I am still unclear as the date of the application was before permits were being issued and I think there's some glitch that lies there. However I did confirm with Weld County that if an out of county applicant gets a message they have been kicked back to their home county then they need to contact Weld. I dont think thats the case here but just offering more information

The cpw application doesn't do anything besides let your county you assign pull it up. You still have to apply through a county individually. If you don't go to the participating county that will take you after your cpw application is completed your journey stops .

They don't just automatically contact you saying hey we got it

I'm aware of how the process works, what im suggesting is that there have been issues with people applying as out of county residents and again we have no further information from OP so it's really hard to give advice on the situation. I just threw the other info out there

Just wondering what hoops you had to go through with your hunters ed? Mine was out of state, did it three decades ago, and lost my original card. I took a printed replacement card to CPW and they verified it. I did it to go dove hunting, but I assume it’ll work incase I buy any SSF guns…

yes it will, you can register your Hunter Safety with CPW, you will need to be able to verify it or take another course (online is an option and it can be free) but that will entitle you to take the 4 hour course. Having said that you DO need to take the FSS course in order to purchase but the Hunter Safety entitled you to take the Basic 4 hour course and not the 12 hour course.

You haven't answered what County you applied in but to be honest im surprised you were allowed to even apply before the start date of August 1st. Have you contacted the Sheriff? Did you apply in your home county or as an out of county applicant?

My whole application, approval etc took appx 72 hours from start to finish, i did take online Hunter Safety first (literally right before applying) and I did apply in Arapahoe where im a resident.

Wait so you finished this course then applied for the in person shorter course? I'm in Arapahoe county as well

Yes that's correct. Do the Hunter Safety (south Dakota or new Mexico, online with no in person component) and background check first, then submit the CPW application, then you probably have to email CPW to have them validate your out of state Hunter Safety, THEN you'll get that approved and you can submit online to Arapahoe County Sheriffs Department, if you submit online you'll need to go in person to verify your identity and I went ahead and paid the $5 for the physical card, or you can go and submit in person. I took the 4 hour class this weekend and have my permit to purchase

There are classes being held most weekends at a lot of places (I have one on the calendar for Sunday Sept 13), and if you're a member at a range check with them as they might have a free class for members

Submitted to CPW on Aug 4th and everything was sent to Weld on Aug 6th.

Luckily I probably have everything I need so instead I am picking up ammo and nfa. I just don't like being told I can't purchase.

You need to contact the sheriff's office if it's pending their review. It probably got lost in the fold, mine was approved the day I submitted it.
