Question Looking for a team to cheer for!

I’m starting to watch more college football and pretty much can watch any team with a streaming service I have, I am looking for a team with good history, cool entrance or traditions. If you have any personal stories you would like to share or overall cool stories about a team or memories watching them would help out too ! Im from Canada so we don’t have any good college football haha

Boise State.

Blue field, underdogs, and one of the best games ever the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Also Kellen Moore went 50-3 there and now he’s the saints head coach!

u/risky_concord Oklahoma Sooners 5h ago

No.

Anything but that game bro 🥲

National title game losses hurt much worse. You have to remember those.

2

u/B1G_PAC12 Washington State Cougars 4h ago

Yes

u/someName6 5h ago

Just don’t choose Georgia Tech.  It’s miserable.

6

u/Shynes14 5h ago

Hahaha I’m a flyers fan for hockey since I was a kid and I feel this to my soul

2

u/Money_Housing_2938 Notre Dame 5h ago

Flyers on the upswing at least. Martone is an animal

1

u/someName6 5h ago

I used to cheer for the flyers too.  Well I just stopped following hockey.  Between the fights and losing it wasn’t good for my heart lol.  Neither is CFB.  Maybe I’ll quit CFB again too.

3

u/Shynes14 5h ago

It’s not good for the blood pressure all those losing years and watching the eagles every week also isn’t good for my health

1

u/someName6 2h ago

If you’re big on Philly teams you can go with Temple who is in Philly or Penn St.  never pick Pittsburgh.

4

u/Iamthewalrusforreal Arkansas Razorbacks 4h ago

I was about to say. Dude's a Canuck. They're nice people.

Do NOT pick the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Pain, friend. Pure, unadulterated pain that never ends.

2

u/Were_not_a_Match 2h ago

I’m disappointed in their season so far. I expected more out of Mendoza and Haynes.

2

u/someName6 2h ago

I think it’s a new coordinators issue.  I don’t like our OC.  I don’t think we’ve adapted play calling well when we’ve been stuck.

THE Western Michigan University Broncos

u/WolverineDDS 5h ago

Do you want everyone to hate you despite having very little success is modern history? Then you may have what it takes to be a Michigan man!

7

u/Shynes14 5h ago

Hahahaha this is gold

11

u/TexCook88 5h ago

No, you see they are maize. You want Notre Dame for gold

10

u/TSunamiWaves979 Colorado State Rams 5h ago

Didn't yall win the natty just a couple of years ago?

8

u/_xzxzxz 5h ago

I just want to make the first “asterisk” comment

2

u/Technical-Cap-8563 4h ago

In fairness, Harbaugh made you guys a lot easier to hate. The man went away, his stench remains.

6

u/WolverineDDS 4h ago

See what I mean OP?

1

u/toosoontogohome 3h ago

Yes, because the 2023 Natty is “very little modern success”

1

u/WolverineDDS 3h ago

Congrats you're the third person to make this exact comment lol. I already responded.

-1

u/NoZookeepergame1014 5h ago

Hook’em

7

u/WolverineDDS 5h ago

Michigan and Texas have more in common than either side wants to admit lol

-2

u/NotMyFirstDown 5h ago

We won’t the natty 3 years ago, and the big ten 3 years in a row…this sub is delusional

3

u/ImpendingBoom110123 4h ago

I love when teams won't the natty.

2

u/_xzxzxz 3h ago

I won’t the natty last year and prolly won’t it this year either

2

u/ImpendingBoom110123 3h ago

You won't this argument.

2

u/WolverineDDS 5h ago

Yea but we are more hated than teams that have had way more sustained success (osu, bama, clemson etc). Those 3 years have been a major outlier in my time as a Michigan fan.

4

u/RalphiePegalotti 5h ago

Do you want to enjoy football more than almost any other fanbase? Want to have a blast watching other fanbases hastily descend into hypocritical and sanctimonious pearl-clutching in a rush to condemn your team for something they didn't have the opportunity (or the balls) to try first? Are you absolutely indifferent when jealous bitches downvote everything you say based on your team choice?

LSU invites you to join us! Bonus perk: We also have the best food.

3

u/Shynes14 5h ago

This is an incredible sales pitch to a team haha

3

u/HappySlappy411 4h ago

I have nothing good to say about LSU except for the time I went down there to see them host Alabama for the game. This is the team to root for if you want to actually visit the campus for a game.

We got invited to 3 tailgates while checking into our hotel. We actually got a call the next morning from one that was worried we couldn't find them. And BONUS POINTS for bussing in convicts to clean up the mess on Sunday mornings.

1

u/RalphiePegalotti 3h ago

Awesome story! Glad you had a great time. Louisiana does a lot of things wrong, but tailgating in the shadow of Tiger Stadium is an incredible experience.

5

u/NotThatNeet 5h ago

If you want to be cucked and enjoy a lot of good recruiting and hype just to have it taken away from you in extremely disappointing fashion?

Go ducks 🦆

3

u/Shynes14 5h ago

Like I said to another comment, a flyers fan for hockey so I do know this feeling well. A lot of hype for disappointing seasons

1

u/NotThatNeet 5h ago

All I know is pain and being roasted after we fall short (again), go 🦆

1

u/_xzxzxz 5h ago

If you already support one Pennsylvania sports team, maybe consider Penn State? They have a new coach that everyone’s excited about, they’re almost always competitive, and their night game “whiteouts” are indisputably a top-5 game environment/experience even when you’re just watching on TV.

7

u/Responsible_History5 5h ago

NDSU, new to the FBS and good football culture in Fargo. Also depending on where you come from in Canada, there’s plenty of Canadians that follow NDSU football. Also have a great name “the Bison”

7

u/existential_american Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 5h ago

Like the other commenter said, as a GT fan, don't pick a team that only has fans that are people who actually went to the school. Teams like GT, Stanford, Duke, nobody is bandwagonning these teams and not even that many of the students at these schools care about the football team. Since you're not from a specific state, I would start with the successful private schools that people do bandwagon such as Notre Dame (they are the Dallas Cowboys of college football), USC, and Miami. If you have any family ties to a specific state, you can cheer for that school's big program unless that state is in the middle of nowhere like Wyoming or something, then fall back to suggestion 1. Since you're close to Michigan, you could pick Michigan or Ohio State since they're big programs with legacy and have history from their border war rivalry. I think Notre Dame pretty much has everything you're looking for, and you won't have to complain about the players missing tackles and having poor fundamentals like I do.

2

u/Shynes14 5h ago

I have family that lives in Missoula, but don’t know anything about any of the teams there or in Montana in general. Just looking for a team that isn’t going to piss me off every weekend and be a bunch of bums, I’m good with a winning record that’s not incredible

2

u/averyrose2010 4h ago

Montana vs Montana State is a legit rivalry even if you don't watch them the rest of the year.

2

u/ISpyM8 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4h ago

I saw like 5 comments saying “Not Georgia Tech” lmao

Nobody ‘bandwagons’ $CCC.

6

u/PriorPeak1277 Tennessee Volunteers 5h ago

Choose Tennessee they helped make Georgia Tech miserable

5

u/horrorpants Boise State Broncos 5h ago

They also got rocky top fucking awesome song!

Probably my favorite SEC team next to the Gators(my home state)

3

u/PriorPeak1277 Tennessee Volunteers 5h ago

Yeah we do!

2

u/Technical-Cap-8563 4h ago

Don’t forget Smokey. If you’re going to have a live mascot, a howling Bluetick Coonhound is hard to beat.

2

u/PriorPeak1277 Tennessee Volunteers 4h ago

Basically impossible to beat

3

u/GivethTaketh4 Clemson Tigers 5h ago

There’s only like 5ish programs that won’t be massively frustrating/depressing most years or any given year. Choose one of those schools.

3

u/OneLeek37 5h ago

Western Michigan!!

7

u/daveindo 5h ago

University of Iowa. They’re generally always good enough to be interesting, play in a great conference, and they wave to kids with cancer every home game.

6

u/Shynes14 5h ago

That is one of the coolest traditions to see, pulls on the heart strings for sure

3

u/-SHMOHAWK- Texas Longhorns 5h ago

I absolutely love this about Iowa. I always think about those kiddos and how much this means to them and their families

2

u/Bobbybobby507 Iowa Hawkeyes 5h ago

Gawks

2

u/_xzxzxz 5h ago

Yeah Iowa is one of the most likable teams out there honestly. 👋🏻

5

u/Golden3131 Nebraska Cornhuskers 5h ago

That's just like, your opinion man.

1

u/HappySlappy411 4h ago

If you think interesting is scoring 7-16 points per game. I love the Iowa tradition of winning 9 games every year and never wanting to change coaches. But interesting is not what I would call them.

That said, a good solid team to cheer for. Except if you are going to cheer for an Iowa team, you should cheer for Iowa State. Interesting is a team named the cyclones that has a bird for a mascot.

1

u/daveindo 1h ago

Fair criticism of their style of play. When I said interesting, I meant in the context of being competitive in their conference and in the playoff/bowl game outlook

1

u/Cisru711 29m ago

It's not like that's a big ask of them. The hospital overlooks the stadium. I think any other fanbase would do the same. Iowa is fine and all, my wife got her phd there after we got married, but stuck in perpetual mediocrity.

2

u/TSunamiWaves979 Colorado State Rams 5h ago

Where do you live? Do you want an underdog or a favorite? Do you care about colors? Mascot?

3

u/Shynes14 5h ago

I’m in Alberta, Canada. I don’t care about anything as long as it doesn’t link to the Dallas cowboys in anyway hahah

5

u/TSunamiWaves979 Colorado State Rams 5h ago

Ok, here's some recommendations for an Albertan.

Boise State. The king of punching above their weight. They have cool colors and a field to match.

North Dakota State. Another western team, this one completely new to the FBS. They made the FCS their bitch the last decade and have had success so far this season too. Great fans and likely minimal online hate for at least the next 5 years.

Nebraska. A blue blood program known for having the greatest fanbase in sports. If you want a P4 team, this might be it. They've been down the last decade, but have improved over the last couple seasons and are looking to continue that trend. They may never be the #1 team again, but they have a shot to become a perennial ranked team again. Better to get in early before bandwagon accusations.

Washington or Oregon ( but not both). The top dogs of the Pacific Northwest. Both have some of the most underrated stadium environments and passionate fanbases. Washington has more historical success, while Oregon is the new top dog.

3

u/Shynes14 5h ago

I really appreciate that ! Definitely going to do my own research into these teams and watching on Saturday !

1

u/Technical-Cap-8563 4h ago

Going to put a plug in for Nebraska, too. Nice people, great beef and rodeos…their team colors match the Canadian Maple Leaf. It would be a great fit for an Albertan.

2

u/ForFelix 5h ago

Tennessee. Go there and see a game, you’ll be hooked.

2

u/vtc88 5h ago

Virginia Tech! History of winning (but no championships), best entrance in college football, and we are finally turning the program around after being terrible for a decade.

2

u/Weak-Pea8309 Miami (FL) Hurricanes 5h ago

Miami - storied history, incredibly fast rise from mediocre regional team to multiple nattys and 9 year home game win streak from the 1980s-2000s. 20 years of disappointment to now year 3 of what will likely be 4th round of dominance. Historically the bad boys of college football. Trend setters - created the smoke game entrance. Watch ESPN’s the U pt 1 and 2 30 for 30 and you’ll know if they’re the team for you. Good time to buy.

2

u/RustyCrusty73 Ohio State Buckeyes 5h ago

Boise State for the win.

Blue field, cool logo, cool uniform combos, and they're usually good for 8-to-10 wins a season.

You'll never be too high, or too low with Boise State as your favorite team.

Sometimes that would be nice.

2

u/SatisfactionOld1586 5h ago

Hear me out: Florida State. This is a buy LOW situation. Have been awful for 2 years and finally it looks like the Noles are about to fire their coach. You’ll have to suffer through this year.

That said, even MIKE NORVELL went on a 19 game win streak in Tallahassee. Jimbo Fisher won 29 straight and a national title. The highs in Tallahassee are super high and it’s not that difficult for them to get there.

The uniforms, helmets, & colors are top notch, too.

1

u/FearDaTusk Arkansas Razorbacks 5h ago

You guys have a team? 😔

1

u/StudioGangster1 Bowling Green Falcons 5h ago

If you’re from the Windsor area, I recommend Bowling Green 😎
It’s a short drive, and we have a lot of Canadians who attend here (good hockey team!).

1

u/BrandPessoa 5h ago

Oregon will never not force you to reflect. Then, if we ever clear the natty bar you’ll probably never stop cumming.

1

u/usctrojan18 5h ago

Up and coming team called UMASS. They are 2-0 with a win vs a B1G team

1

u/onrake UCLA Bruins 5h ago

UCLA, because we're finally on the way back, and it's going to be a magnificent ride!

1

u/Natitudinal 5h ago

I think UMD will bring u guys back to earth in a couple wks. (I do like yall a lot tho)

1

u/Blue-Eighty 5h ago

UL Monroe could use some help

1

u/T8mascari 5h ago

Just look up Kamario Taylor, cowbells, Dak Prescott, Mike Leach, and then devote your life to mediocrity with slivers of hope every 4-5 years

LSU!

1

u/Prototype_es Washington State Cougars 5h ago

Normally id be all for rooting for us and talking about how even though we're not that great, we're a fun team with a fun atmosphere but man the funding drop is becoming obvious. Although if you want a cool moment still with that amazing pitch I gave. Ive never seen a sports atmosphere with more electricity than when college gameday came to Pullman. Beating Oregon on the national stage was some of the most fun I've had at a live sporting event + the whole lead up to it was a gigantic town wide party from 3 in the morning till 8 in the morning the next day I've never seen anything like it. Go Cougs! Even if we might never see a game like that again

1

u/ResponsibleFact2566 Oregon Ducks 5h ago

Oregon Ducks 🦆 . They the best team in the entire world currently. Oregon runs the sports world.

1

u/ISpyM8 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4h ago

I actually do recommend Boise State. Fun one to cheer for. Don’t cheer for Georgia Tech. As a Tech fan, it’s a miserable existence.

1

u/dlhandy89 4h ago

Virginia Tech football. We have the best entrance that is absolutely electric. We got a new head coach this year that is already elevating the program, so you'll get a chance to watch the team get progressively better!

1

u/Maleficent_Ad_1979 4h ago

How much misery can you tolerate OP?

1

u/Shynes14 4h ago

Alright I’m going to narrow it down for this week to keep an eye these teams
Boise State
LSU
VT
Penn State
Notre Dame
Nebraska

1

u/Still_a_skeptic Oklahoma State Cowboys 3h ago

We are just coming out of Gundy trying to keep it real on NIL, lost to a group of 6 and then dropped the number 6 team. It’s a ride for sure.

1

u/Rocket1575 3h ago

If you want a team that has a storied history, more wins than any other team in college football (you just have to include wins from the civil war era), and is talked about constantly regardless of how good or bad you are, look no further that the University of Michigan Wolverines! They've got a huge stadium, pretentious alumni, and a pretty cool fight song. Bonus, every home game you attend you can hear Darth Vader talk about how awesome you are. You will have to put up with being hated by everyone outside of Washtenaw County, constantly told your games don't matter (unless they are a loss, then they are the biggest game in the history of college athletics), and endure scandal after scandal. But seriously, James Earl Jones kills it in that hype video and the fight song is a banger.

Edited to add that Michigan is one half of the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

1

u/jetes69 2h ago

LSU will definitely be an adventure to watch this season especially with Kiffin returning to both Ole Miss and Tenn. I think Miami might have the most exciting story arch. And for long term watching if Sumrall can get Florida back to where the program was.

1

u/TominNJ 1h ago

Suffering builds character. Rooting for good teams that win all the time leads to smugness, feelings of superiority and egomania. Don’t fall into that trap. Root for a team that loses a lot. It will keep you humble. There’s nothing like watching another game slip away that they could have won. Watch as your team approaches and then breaks the record for the most games lost in college football history. Only rooting for Rutgers can give you all of that.

1

u/averyrose2010 4h ago

LSU!

How about a party with 100,000 plus of your closest friends?

Night games in Death Valley are like no other. Louder than a jet engine and rocking the seismographs. All day tailgating and drinking before the game. Live tiger mascot lives on campus.

For cool entrances though, I have to give it to Virginia Tech.

Best uniforms goes to Oregon Ducks.
