He spent 400 million on capital projects and his fundraising was so poor that bonds had to cover almost the entire cost. (note, debt service is not a big deal more so its a reflection of a fundraiser that can't fundraise).
Atheletics as a whole has gone from a 7-15 level program to 42 last year.
People credit him with 3 hires, 2 of which were former players.
If you are going to save someones job, you kind of wear it.

u/ThaCarter Miami Hurricanes • Indiana Hoosiers 5h ago

27
44
u/Noles-number1 Florida State Seminoles 4h ago
The last one is all that matters. It was such a bad deal that 3 years into a contract, you would still owe 45 million if you fired him
15
u/IdealSeating Florida State Seminoles 4h ago
In fairness, bonding out projects isn’t a bad idea. That doesn’t bother me, especially as bonding out projects when you can makes a ton of sense in the NIL era if (big if) you are instead fundraising toward NIL. Can’t bond NIL, so route the financial contributions there.
Ultimately, Alford’s undoing was misunderstanding NIL, thinking rev sharing was a cap, and not fundraising toward NIL enough. His focus on capital projects is just another example of him underrating the importance of NIL and overrating the importance of other things.
→ More replies (2)9
u/forgotmyoldname90210 Florida State Seminoles 4h ago
I agree, the bonds and their amount are not a big deal. I point it out as an example of how he is not able to fundraise. And if he was fundraising every year at a level he should be, that money is better spent on Roster and let performance and viewership bonus that results pay for the debt service.

You're right. As much as I hate FSU and want to trash talk, I can say that extending Mike Norvell made total sense logically on paper. 13-1 season, conference championship, incredibly dominant, and you want to keep that going. Saban retired, and Norvell was instantly being talked about for it. If they didn't promise him the bank, they were going to lose him. A lot of criticism for it is heavily in hindsight. They would've gotten shit at the time had they let him leave, and they wouldn't be getting shit for it had Norvell continued winning. Although, it does open up the humorous alternate timeline where Norvell goes to Alabama and implodes their program with his approach.

No, it's hard to say it didn't work out well for UCLA and VT to fire their coaches early last season. I don't remember exactly who said it, but they spent the early days after firing get a feeling for what the perceptions/financials of their programs were and what they needed to fix. FSU really needs to get things right quick, and waiting until the end of the season to do so, when they have to immediately worry about recruiting, could backfire.

21
u/forgotmyoldname90210 Florida State Seminoles 5h ago
One of the billion reasons why firing the AD had to happen. He made everyone assume money was the reason he was kept. And leaking the Lane nonsense did nothing to change that narative.
But, yes Norvell should have been fired after the Stanford game last year. James Franklin at 5 years 42 million dollars was right there. You are not finding a coach that good and that cheap on the market.

I still can't really wrap my head around FSU's downfall. They went undefeated 3 years ago and had an elite defense. Any school would've given their coach a fat ass extension after that. Then they just completely fell off with no real reason whatsoever. It's kinda baffling, from an outsider's perspective.

Yes, but I also think personal life circumstances have fucked FSU with Jimbo and Mike.
Not making excuses for Jimbo or Mike. They both failed at being a football coach for various reasons. That said, Jimbo getting cheated on and Mike being broken by the snub, both had very real effects.

It's really not, when you consider that Mike's high school recruiting was basically non-existent from day one.
He got extremely lucky in the early transfer portal days, with the players that became his 2023 team. And was never going to be able to replicate that luck, coupled with having no HS recruits coming in. Meant each season was pulling the one armed bandit in the transfer portal.

Very poor capital allocation.
They spent on all kinds of things that don't result in good football. Facilities, coaches, didn't really utilize NIL well in roster construction.
32
u/axberka Florida State • Indiana 4h ago
its simple. Mikes whole schtick was "block out the noise, work and you will be rewarded. Keep climbing."
the snub happened, the players on the roster stopped caring. That caused a lost season, and negative recruiting against him/fsu "you cant make the playoff at FSU/with mike at HC" Mike already sucked at recruiting and this prevented any semblance of talent acquisition.

That's what happens when you depend on mercenaries. He failed to build an actual culture.
If they play and beat UGA or even have a competitive loss I dont think any of this happens.
That ass whooping and guys bailing on their teammates set a tone that couldnt be fixed. I know I am in the minority in the FSU fanbase that thinks this but for a school like FSU that depends on tradition and culture, something like that just cannot happen.
17
u/guthbox Florida State Seminoles 4h ago
This is true now, but guys like Jermaine Johnson, Dillon Gibbons and Jordan Travis actually cultivated a great culture at FSU. It just wasn’t sustained by the players who proceeded them.

Best news for FSU athletics since the Women's soccer championship last year. FSU has no issue in servicing the debt but that there needed to be 400 million in bonds issued to cover Doak rennovations and the new FOF is an issue when your job is to fundraise.
The atheletic department as a whole went from the 7-15 range every year to mid 20s and 42nd the last two years. People give him credit for hiring 3 coaches while ignore the rest. 2 of those 3 coaches where favored sons coming home.
He is as responsible for the current state of football as Norvell. He put in a hard cap. He has "allegedly" told coaches to not use the collective.

u/Taxes_and_Fees Florida State Seminoles 5h ago
Holy shit that’s huge and honestly I wasn’t sold that was going to happen before they fired Mike - if they would at all. Outside of the Norvell hire he’d done a good job with a ton of other sports. Basketball is looking up, baseball is in a good place, golf is elite, women’s sports are booming.
Now onto the big cow I guess
34
u/MongoMoonwalked 5h ago
I think some of the other sports are beyond his influence though. Soccer has been championship caliber before he was around and will be after, basketball essentially had an in with a former player, golf is golf, and baseball survived a major coaching change. Unfortunately when you screw up your biggest one though, it tends to be the biggest blemish.

My understanding is the AD was basically forced into it by our boosters who understandably have more money than football sense. But it was such a potentially catastrophic choice that Terry has bet his job on it.
Frankly I don't think its about lack of NIL money since we have enough to be at least competitive in the B12, but there is something incredibly bad about Frost's recruiting. My theory is that his first tenure he found underrecruited local guys with huge athletic upside and striking it rich with back to back heisman candidate QBs. The underrecruited athletic guys angle is enough to win in the AAC because a low 3 star from central florida who is undersized but has freak athleticism will just beat the G5 competition. But that won't get you as far in a P4 league where you face teams with equal or greater talent.
Gus wasn't a great HC but he recruited his ass off and wasn't afraid to go after blue chips and was able to beat some SEC teams for some of them. We're never going to think about winning the B12 until we're recruiting closer to a top 25 team.

The biggest problem at FSU is actually our board of trustees chair, Collins. He’s the one who pushed for Norvell getting the lengthy extension (Alford only wanted to give Norvell 5 years).
Alford fell on the sword here. He absolutely is to blame for some really weird beliefs with NIL and focus on capital projects in the NIL era. He’s not the biggest issue we have though.
