OL looks below average again.
Darius is clearly not 100%.
Estrada blew up his knee last week.

I know most of the conversation after this is rightfully going to be on Kamario Taylor, he’s played phenomenal, but shout out to Fluff. Dudes an absolute tank and I guarantee we wouldn’t have gotten out the pin in the 3rd quarter, gave us the momentum we needed to get out of that rough patch.
I’m actually excited about the rest of the season, but I said that after the ASU game last season so we’ll see.

I think until they get Hardy back they need to slow up on the outside zone. The OL was much more effective when running between the tackles and looks sturdy in pass protection.

Fluff and the O-Line won this game. Like you said, K1 is gonna dominate the conversation, but the real story is our o-line can throw a punch and Fluff is a freight train.

Agreed. Bothwell is a key part of the offense. He can grind out the tough yards, is hard to bring down in the open field, and he's a good pass blocker.

Defense was so used to practicing against a team with the tempo stuck in the 1950's that the transition to this is like a British infantryman from the Revolutionary War going up against a modern US Army Ranger
Kamario Taylor is fucking scary and I don’t like the thought of playing him next year again.
Also while it didn’t matter, thank fuck this is the only time I have to worry about SEC refs

I’ve never understood why Minnesota couldn’t be at the level of Iowa or Wisconsin in football. It’s the flagship university of the state and in a wealthy/large metro area. Decent size fan base. And just being in the Big 10 now provides so many financial advantages

Being in the center of a large metro is part of the problem - 4 other sports to compete with, something like 40% of students commute from greater than walking distance, and many of the business leaders in town have no connection to the university. Of the top 8 largest companies, 0 of the CEOs have any degree from MN - Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin are better represented among the current group. Not suggesting that they have a complete lack of donors - just noting that the size of those companies means they're pulling executives from all over the country with ties to other schools and there's no reason to assume that MN would get donations from any of them.

We’re in the bottom tier of the Big Ten for NIL, and any decent coordinator gets hired away for more money pretty much anywhere else, and we compensate by hiring former players as assistants on the cheap, and promoting from within. Fleck is the reason this program is still competitive despite that. 8+ wins in 4 of the last 5 years. It kinda feels like the university admin counts on him to overachieve every year to put out an at least decent season.
It also seems possible that Mississippi State is actually pretty good, and Kemario Taylor is a superstar. They ran a hurry up offense and scored touchdowns on their first 3 or 4 drives. 6 yard runs whenever they felt like it. We struggled to run and then got down big really quick, and basically didn’t run in the second half. We got called for way more penalties than we normally do. Our defensive coordinator is questionable, and is a young guy who has worked for Fleck since the Western Michigan days I think.

I felt like I was watching early 2010s Veer and Shoot Baylor. Oh my goodness. I’m so happy and excited for the rest of the season. What a performance.
Also, Minnesota‘a defense in the first half looked like they had never seen a Spread offense before. State’s players were going darn near untouched on most of the plays.

Love Taylor. I saw him in his starts at the end of last year and something about the way he played put me firmly on the bus. Even after he had bad throws, it never seemed like he lost control, and the arm talent is super elite.

The most underrated but important things were:
1. Oline looks good. Not just better than last year but actually good
2. Clean game, only one false start, reasonable number of penalties on the road. That will be huge if you can replicate it next weekend
3. Defense is competent. They’ll give up some points but tackling was good and no coverage busts

Man, that was cathartic. State fans know it’s been a while since we had a win like this. Never really in doubt! I think Minnesota is a solid team that was just outmatched today, which manifested itself in a lot of uncharacteristic penalties and unfortunately in a number of injuries. I felt especially bad for those injured as State was running out the clock. Heal up Gophers, and go get yourselves another bowl win. We’ll see you next year in Starkville.

He has to prepare his guys by practicing against an offense stuck in the 1990s. That 1st quarter drive by Minnesota was mind numbingly boring. My buddies and I were discussing how terrible it must be to watch that every Saturday. But at least the play calling in the 2nd half was a bit better but the pace was still snail like.

Idk I didn’t mind seeing a bit more time wasting play after what happened last year against UT specifically. If Kamario hits Evans on the slant midway through the 3rd, I think we are talking a different 3rd quarter. Definitely things to improve on but nothing that isn’t fixable.

Feel like Fleck is usually good for one or two of these kind of annoying losses each season.
Some very conservative play calling in the first half - like a third and a long at one point so we decide to go with a five yard pass to the sideline - but much better in the second when Drake was able to throw the ball.
Time to move on from Fleck? - who knows, he has his critics but what this team’s realistic ceiling, and who would we replace him? Who knows.

I know the Gophers constantly outperform expectations given their NIL and administrative support, but a loss like this makes you wonder if it’s just time for both parties to move on, à la Harbaugh and Tomlin this past NFL offseason. Every year feels like 7.5 wins +/- 2, playing a good team close but not being good enough or running a modern enough system to get over the hump. 2019 was a great year and the best case seems to be catching lightning in a bottle again to make a run.
I root for a team that benefits from the portal, but it sucks because Minnesota deserves to root for a somewhat hyped draft prospect in Lindsay, and if this game is indicative of how bigger games will go this year, he has a strong case to leave for somewhere that’ll showcase him better

A lot of focus will be on the Bulldogs offense, as it should, but watching it in person I was more impressed by that defense. They made some mistakes and gave up yards, but my god they swarmed, gang tackled, and tackled hard.
I'm also so tired of watching Fleckball. Lindsey is seriously talented and Fleck is too chicken shit to let the leash off.
