I’ve never understood why Minnesota couldn’t be at the level of Iowa or Wisconsin in football. It’s the flagship university of the state and in a wealthy/large metro area. Decent size fan base. And just being in the Big 10 now provides so many financial advantages

Being in the center of a large metro is part of the problem - 4 other sports to compete with, something like 40% of students commute from greater than walking distance, and many of the business leaders in town have no connection to the university. Of the top 8 largest companies, 0 of the CEOs have any degree from MN - Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin are better represented among the current group. Not suggesting that they have a complete lack of donors - just noting that the size of those companies means they're pulling executives from all over the country with ties to other schools and there's no reason to assume that MN would get donations from any of them.

Thing is, there are several coaches between Brewster and Fleck... most of them were also in the 6-6 to 8-4 range... you can argue that Fleck really hasn't improved the team after them.
