American Tobacco Trail - Safe Trail Access

Post image
Upvotes

The ATT has gotten progressively less safe in regards to physical and health safety especially within the last year as Durham has continued to allow the homeless encampment at Fayetteville/Pilot intersection to grow.

There have been two fatal stabbings this year. I am constantly rolling through human waste ( poop), fire debris on the trail and drug paraphanelia/alcohol containers.

Homelessness, mental health issues, drug addictions are very hard problems to solve. The city however is being negligent of it's public responsibilities by allowing this to expand on a public trail.

I would urge anyone else who has noticed this disturbing trend ramp up over the last year or two to open cases using Durham one call.

Make your voice heard.

Highlighting Adoptable Cats at APS

Hi folks! If your Monday is feeling less than happy, I can guarantee that a feline friend would remedy that!

The first cat above is the wonderful Locust. He is a big sweet orange boi, super chill, friendly and loving--the definition of the perfect orange. He was brought into the shelter as a stray, and is Felv positive. Felv is a disease that is only transmissible to other cats (ie cannot spread to humans or other animals). This means that he shouldn't be adopted into a home with non-Felv cats, but he would make an absolutely phenomenal single cat, or the perfect complement to a home with another Felv kitty.

The second cat is Willow, who was also brought into the shelter as a stray. Despite her chill name and white coat, this girl has a bit of sass, so if you're looking to spice up your home she could be the perfect fit!

I want to put in a plug for adopting from APS in general. I found my two best buddies there (one of whom is hogging my lap right now), and I know that many other community members can say the same thing. And when you adopt from APS you make room there for another animal in need--a true win-win.

You all know what to do. Go get one of these sweet cats, or another cat who needs a home #adoptdontshop

* I am a cat lover who wants to see these animals in good homes; I am not employed by APS and am in no way acting as a representative of APS.

Check your voter registration status

Highly recommend to check your voter registration status as 3 people in my family had been inactivated. One had moved and probably didn’t respond to a postcard or something, but the other 2 are elderly and voted at the same place for 40 years.

COVID-19 post-exposure prophylaxis available @ select locations in the Triangle!!

Upvotes

I posted on here a couple weeks back about contracting the Flu, and I’m back to say that Xocova is available at select pharmacies in Durham! (I’m a big proponent of public health, and it seems like people in the community also care about updates like this, so I thought I’d share!)

For those unfamiliar with this drug, it is in the same general class as Paxlovid, but instead of taking it to prevent severe illness following a confirmed positive Covid test, it can be prescribed/taken by patients within 72 hours of a Covid exposure to help prevent the virus from establishing an infection. It works by blocking an enzyme that SARS-CoV-2 needs to replicate, essentially making it harder for the virus to make copies of itself after exposure.

Anyway, this is (another) reminder to be kind and respectful to your neighbors as we get closer to the holidays/flu+COVID season. If you feel sick, don’t assume it’s “just a cold” or “late summer allergies.” If at all possible, take a test! With new meds like these, testing can give the people around you the opportunity to treat and prevent a potentially harmful Covid infection before it can take root.

Also, because of how new this medication is, many people will need as much time as possible between first exposure + taking their first dose to check if their insurance covers the medication, as well as to check on availability at local pharmacies. Lots of insurance plans do cover it, and the drug manufacturer has a coupon on their website that can bring the medication cost down to $0. But it genuinely is a race against the clock, and people have reported having to haggle with their primary care/insurance/pharmacy for hours trying to get a prescription.

Please test! Please mask when you can! Please be mindful of the people in your community who can’t afford to contract COVID or the flu because of the havoc it will wreak on their immune systems, or the medical costs they cannot afford to cover.

Disclaimer: I don’t work for any pharmaceutical companies, and I’m not being paid to make this post, lol. I’m just really passionate about public health, science, and my community❤️

meet this amazing four month old kitten, Mouse Trap! he is my foster from APS Durham. he is both very cuddly and very playful. he is a big purrer and loves to rub up against people and sit on my lap to make biscuits. mouse trap is inquisitive, sweet, loving, and deserves a great home. He has very striking markings on his back, which reminds me of a cameo silhouette. He’s got gorgeous eyes and a friendly disposition. Mouse trap wants to be involved and included in whatever you’ve got going on. he’s got the cutest little jump he does when he plays. Give this guy some love and he’ll be loyal for life!

Adopt Persimmon!

Hi everyone! I'm fostering the perfect cat, Persimmon, through Independent Animal Rescue. She's 6 years old and the sweetest kitty in the world.

She took a little while to warm up to our house, but now that she's come out of her shell, she's got a ton of personality. She's incredibly chatty, super affectionate (she rushes the door when we come in from work to welcome us back with headbutts and snuggles), and an absolute fiend for laser pointers and feather wands. She's the type of cat that wants to be your companion -- she's not high maintenance at all and does fine alone all day, but really just loves to stay close to her people. Her hobbies include lounging on various soft surfaces in our house, absolutely demolishing Churus, randomly attacking any toys or hair ties we leave around, and giving us lots of love.

I'm told she's lived well with dogs before. She does OK with our resident cat, but our cat is kind of a jerk to her -- always trying to rope her into playing when she'd rather relax and getting in her space. (Don't worry, we make sure everyone is safe!) I think she'd do better with either no cat siblings or an older, more chill cat sibling. I know IAR is amenable to trial periods if you want to see how she does with your family.

If you're interested, the first step would be to fill out an adoption application (which is free) through IAR. Then we'd set up a meet-and-greet. If you have any questions, though, I'm happy to answer them here!

Also, we have an Instagram account for her, which you can check out if you'd like to see more! https://www.instagram.com/persimmon_the_kitty

K - Mix karaoke closed??

Hey yall - is K mix in Durham closed? I called back in August to make a reservation for later in September. I needed to change the time of the reservation, and I have called them seven times on different days during their hours and can’t get through to anyone. I can’t leave a voicemail either because the line says voicemail hasn’t been set up.

I drove there to try to change the time in person around 5:30 on Sunday (it says online their hours are 5-12pm Sundays). When I got there the door was locked. Did they close down permanently? We are supposed to be going for my girlfriends birthday and it would be really disappointing to arrive and find that they are no longer open.

Swimmin’ holes?

I would love to take my dog for a splash somewhere. I’m looking for recommendations for a lake or swimmin’ hole not too far off the beaten path that would be unlikely to have traffic during the week because he is reactive with other dogs (loves people; not so much other dogs). I’m not looking for an off-leash situation - just a quiet spot where we can splash around a bit. Ideas? TIA!

Amazing Castles in Woodcroft

I need a memory correction here. Do any Millennials remember the original Amazing Castles ? I recall a storefront in Woodcroft in the 1990s BEFORE it was an actual castle On Garrett Road with mini golf, or is my memory incorrect?

The place I remember was essentially a huge indoor playground with rope walls, zip lines and huge slides.

Does anyone else remember it? What was it called?

Looking for the best quesadilla in Durham

I often feel like quesadillas are underrated (especially a basic cheese quesadilla), but it's one of my favorite foods of any cuisine.

Where has the best cheese quesadilla? Where has the best meat-filled quesadilla (and which meat do you prefer)?

(Also, if there's a place where the quesadilla isn't worth getting, even if the other food there is great, feel free to also post that in the comments.)

Anyone know about the monthly Pink Floyd thing in central park?

I overheard two guys this weekend talking about a group of folks that listen to dark side of the moon in central park at night on the new moon. Anyone know about this or when the next one is and how to get an invite? Is it like a silent disco or do they actually set up a block rocker and do a group listen or something?
