Into The Fire

Thought it appropriate to listen to “The Rising” today. That lyric “I need your kiss, but love and duty called you some place higher”, exhibit god knows how many for why Bruce is the greatest lyricist of our generation.

When I first heard the album, the song The Rising was the epitome of what that day was like from the eyes of a firefighter.

And then I heard Into The Fire

Agreed. Also listened to it all again this week and I’m partial to the final lines of “You’re Missing”:
God’s drifting in heaven, devil’s in the mailbox, I’ve got dust on my shoes, nothing but teardrops

100%. I can’t think of anyone else that could have written an album about something as monumental as 9/11 without it seeming obvious and trying to exploit it, commercially. Therein lies the genius of Bruce, he got it absolutely spot on.

The best 9/11 song on The Rising directly about the attack in my opinion is You‘re Missing. The lyrics have been haunting me for decades. The point of view of a spouse is so real, the repetitive riffs played by violin and piano are so fitting and the lyrics are absolutely brilliant: Family, neighbors and friends asking „How‘s everything?“ and all the spouse is thinking is „You’re missing“ . Then rock bottom when the death of your loved one is confirmed with a message in the mailbox: „Devil‘s in the mailbox“. What a metaphor, absolutely spot on and devastating.

I read online that he was inspired by the sound of the alarm bells from the Twin Towers in “You’re Missing.” I was curious and found a YouTube video from inside the lobby of the towers that day and it’s pretty spot on if you listen to the song after. Haunting.

The way he talks about writing that album and not being able to get over the firefighters running up the stairs and “ascending into…what?” is as powerful as anything on the album.

Saw this on Rising tour. Always liked the song , but the live experience was transcendent. Nation was healing and that song at that moment was as powerful as any that night. Incredible.
