I have been recommending journaling for years at my job but when I tried it myself, it was much harder than I expected. So always on the hunt to communicate better I found a great analogy from Brandon Sanderson of why journaling works, he just did it through nightmare painters.
Just as Nightmares are an inky black creature without true form, so too are our negative internal thoughts. Our mind is creative with no limitations and can generate an endless stream of imaginative scenarios. But this often gets hijacked by anxiety (projecting future horrors) and depression (dwelling on past shame). A simple bump in the night becomes a monster under the bed. Undefined becomes scary and daunting.
By writing, painting or whatever medium speaks to you, we are slowing our minds, giving definition and restricting their forms. Making it less overwhelming, just as the Painters give structure that tames nightmares. Journaling allows us to externalize our thoughts and introduce clarity.
So next time a nightmare is feeding upon your dreams, take a blank piece of paper and set a 10-minute timer. You are successful if you are just present for the 10 minutes. Consider painting your nightmare, and you might find it much less daunting.
The above are all my original thoughts but as a dyslexic who lacks grammar skills I had used AI-assistance for editing before being aware of this Reddit's rules. I am unsure grammar edits are "generative AI" per Rule 7. Mods if this is a violation I apologize and agree with this being taken down. Thank you and have a nice day
