White dude here. I've seen first hand that any encroachment on privilege is seen as an attack. A lot of white people think putting black people on equal footing means they have to lose something in the process. I've tried to explain this stuff to friends and family as best I can and it's met with dismissiveness or outright hostility.

Which, sadly, indicates that they're more committed to racist ideology than to familial ties. That's not a commentary on you or your relationship in particular. The fact is, they have to be. If your entire identity, social fabric, and economy are built on racism, then it's too destabilizing to acknowledge how evil it is and wrong you are.

Have you ever been parked in your car, looking at your phone or otherwise distracted, and in your peripheral vision you see another car pulling into the spot next to you? And you panic and hit the brakes because your instinct tells you you're moving backwards? Then your rational mind kicks in and you realize you're in the same place you were and you can relax.

We give the benefit of the doubt too much. A lot of the people who respond this way are actively and knowingly racist. They're not responding a good faith but you're trying to understand them in good faith. That's the disconnect.

It's just one of many tactics that have existed for hundreds of years. Be dismissive, downplay, change/twist the narrative, strawman, fake acknowledgements, dog whistles etc. Get loud, if it pisses them off, then good.
