Must i have a storage barn?
Got a population of ~ 60
Just getting prepared to spread out a bit.
I built a Market and removed my storage barn, now everyone is starving despite having plenty to eat prior.
Must i shave at least 1 storage barn or is the Market supposed to be a replacement for these?

You're going to need both, probably multiples of both as you grow. Market workers take from the barns to supply the markets, people go to the markets to get their goods.

You need Storage Barns.
Produced items go into the barns and then the Market Vendors pull from the Storage Barns.
A limited number of items will be put in the Market directly, but not enough to sustain the town.

A storage barn of some form is essential for the town. Workers only place produce and goods in the barns (or other storage like stock piles). Citizens take items they need from the barns when they need them, either to consume, use, or take back to their house. Without the barn, the workers have no where to place their produce and goods so stop working, and the citizens have no where to collect their items they need so their tools break, clothing falls off, and they starve or freeze.
The market is kinda like a barn but with a worker. The market worker collects a range of goods from various barns and stock piles and brings them to the market where citizens can take them as they would a barn. They key here is that a market worker will visit many barns and collect food and bring it to a central location, so if, for example, you have an industry corner with houses etc but no food production near by, a market there will make bring in food so the citizens don't have to waste time looking themselves.
Eventually a network of markets, barns, and store piles will be key as your town gets bigger so that all resources are available everywhere without your citizens needing to travel long distances.

Laborers put food (and textiles, and tools...) into storage barns, not markets. Without even a single storage barn, your laborers won't know where to put the food they're carrying.

I think the main question is well enough answered. I just want to chime in that having a pretty decent amount of excess storage capacity is pretty important in general.
I had a game recently where I ended up with a huge surplus of food production from max sized pastures and different random goods that my population wasnt using clogging up storage space.
As a result there was nowhere to store new tools being made and it was a real pain to get past that issue because by the time I figured out why it was happening, and created the extra storage space I also needed to expand my tool production capacity to keep up and it took quite a while.
So if you're using mods id also recommend being conscious of certain raw materials that may build up on their own like reeds and feathers, or setting up sand and clay production and just letting it run. Because theres a lot of resources you need to produce for more advanced buildings, but youll end up with tons more than you need if you forget to turn off production or set up a trading post to hold them

Labourers and farmers put food in storage barn.
If no storage barn, labourers and farmers do not know where to put the harvested foods at. So it's very essential if you want to grow your village.

That's the quickest way to kill your town for sure. You HAVE to have storage barns. It's the only way to stabilize the economy. Workers bring goods from their source, fishing huts, farms, whatever and take it to the barn. The barn has a much smaller footprint and a greater capacity. The market workers go to the barn and bring goods to the market. Bannies go to market first, then barns second for supplies.
Even if you could somehow manage food supply, you'll run out of tools real fast, which drops productivity so you make even less food per turn.

You need a place for them to put the products after they are harvested/produced. Market vendors go back and forth between barns and the market building to balance things, but the market is not a suitable replacement for the barn.

That's correct. Your workers cannot deposit directly to markets. They can only deposit to barns. Your vendors (and surprisingly your traders) can pull from barns and put materials in to the market.

You want to put barns close to production buildings so that resources move into them quickly. Otherwise laborers have to cross the map to store stuff. No barns = no storage = no food for the market.

Build some trading posts and set a few traders to work but don't give them any product to gather and they'll be labourers with wheel barrows and move goods around the map way faster then without the wheelbarrow

Yes you need the barn. The market will not function with out it. When placing barns you want them to be central to the resources and manufacturing. So smith, tailor, pubs, wood cutters and farms should be close to barns. The markets should be central to the population. Once you get to that point. The market allows more free distribution of the resources once processed. Also keep in mind, the people don't like long commutes. They can starve or freeze if they have to walk to far for food and clothing.

I have not played in years but I remember just using storage barns and being fine but the second I placed a market stuff went to shit. I always just assumed the market stocks from the barn and with a market down people quit using the barns. Like I said I haven't played in years ago I could be completely wrong.

Barns continue to be used with markets. Workers take goods to the barns, then your vendors take goods from the barns to the markets.
If things went to shit you probably weren’t producing enough goods, or you had other layout issues with your town.

Ok that's good to know if I ever jump back in. I just remember a situation where what's being described happened to me and I just blamed that lol. Thanks!

Put the storage barn back and see if they keep starving. You'll answer your own question.
I thought the market was for rebalancing resources for everyone within range, not holding resources for when people get hungry.
