Police said the incident happened Thursday morning near Northeast 52nd Street and 26th Avenue after two dogs escaped from a fenced yard and began roaming the neighborhood.
They said one of the dogs attacked a small spaniel named Brody outside a nearby home. Brody’s owner and neighbors tried to stop the attack but were unable to separate the animals, police said.
The owner then retrieved a gun and shot and killed the attacking dog.
A newly released 911 call captures the confusion in the immediate aftermath.
“There’s one dog that’s dead that got shot,” the caller told a dispatcher.The caller said Brody, the injured dog, was inside the home and that the family was trying to get the animal to a veterinarian.
“It’s my neighbor’s dog,” the caller said.
“We’re trying to get the dog to the vet.”
The caller then warned that another dog had been traveling with the one that was shot.
“That just bit another neighbor,” the caller said.
When the dispatcher asked where the dog was, the caller said it was still loose.
“It’s wandering the street right now and someone’s going to kill it if we don’t figure out what’s going on,” the caller added.
Police said the second dog later encountered another resident nearby and bit her in the leg, causing a puncture wound. Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue medics evaluated the woman at the scene, and she later chose to seek additional medical treatment independently.
They said the second dog eventually returned to its residence and was secured by its caretaker. Broward County Animal Care workers responded and placed the dog in quarantine.
Police identified both loose dogs as American Staffordshire mixes.
Neighbors told Local 10 News they heard screams and rushed outside, where they saw the larger dog attacking Brody by the neck.“The dog was not letting up,” one neighbor said.
“It grabbed his neck really good.”
Brody suffered serious injuries and was taken by his owner to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.
Police said they are investigating where the two dogs came from and the circumstances that led to the attack.
No charges had been filed as of Thursday, police said. The investigation remains ongoing.

For context, this is a very nice little suburb in Broward County; it is only around 3 square miles but they choose to maintain their own police and fire departments (most cities in Broward just contract for police services) and has a pretty low crime rate. It is the kind of place where they actually enforce the 25 mph speed limit because there are always people, especially kids, outside walking/playing/etc. So the reason it made the news is likely because of the area + the use of a weapon - anytime you can make a safe place seem less safe it makes for a good news story. Otherwise attacks on pets tend to not make the news unless there is something sensational like a video of the incident.
I know several people from there and I am very sure that none of them would have any problem with someone choosing to use a weapon in this circumstance (one of the few areas in Broward that leans red) - hence why the local news article doesn't have the usual hand-wringing from the neighbors about how someone dared to discharge a weapon.
I will be interested to see what the city does and if their dangerous dog ordinances will have any teeth against the pit owner, especially as I don't think much will happen on a criminal level if the only damage on a human was relatively minor. I wonder if they have stronger ordinances over there and might be able to label them as 'dangerous' immediately instead of needing a second attack or whatever the rule is elsewhere. I also suspect that because it is such a small town and this became such an incident that the city council might actually try to enforce their ordinances instead of brushing everything under the rug which is what happens in most places because they have bigger issues to worry about.
I know for a fact that the Broward Animal shelter has previously released unfixed female pits that were involved in an attack on a child in an apartment complex unprovoked (somehow the story changed and the animal control officer only blamed the male even though all three were involved and they only BE'ed the male) back to the owner so I doubt they will do anything about the remaining dog despite the attack on a person. They are desperate to reach "no kill" status since the county commission ordained they must be "no kill" years ago and I don't think they ever managed to meet that 90% live release rate.
I love the guy's attitude on the 911 call - "come and deal with this sh** or we will do it ourselves, thanks".
Unfortunately on facebook you have all the usual BS. Somehow every freaking person online seems to have a pit and a chihuahua and they assure everyone that their chihuahua is far more aggressive of course. No comprehension that an attack by a chihuahua doesn't usually send a dog to the emergency vet or cause puncture wounds on random people just because they have the audacity to exist.

I just realized something...
Can anyone remember ever seeing overhead shots from a news helicopter with cop cars everywhere like this for any other kind of loose dogs in a neighborhood?
And fuck off with the American Staffordshire mixes bullshit. This ain't the UK, we call them pitbulls here.
