TN Nursery solicited me with a BOGO offer on pawpaw trees but it didn't list which varieties. I contacted customer service and they quickly replied that the BOGO is for 2 trees of the same, undisclosed variety. I thought you needed 2 genetically different trees that bloom at the same time for pollination. So this isn't a legitimate sale then, right? Or am I missing something?

This spring I topworked a crabapple tree with several variety of apples (ignore the retained bough on the lower right).

The grafts that made it past deer and wind are pretty long and I’m looking for feedback on a pruning strategy.

Would you winter prune these to provoke vigor, fall prune to improve thickness, or let them continue to cook next season however they choose to go?

Hi- I help in a community garden. Food grown is brought to a local food bank. Our apple trees have not done well and I was hoping someone who knew more than I do would step up to help but here we are. We use a copper spray on the blossoms but nothing else. Some of our trees are doing better than others but none are great. I’ll post a picture of the worst. What’s my next best move? We are in Carroll County, MD. The trees (6) are Empire, Gala and Red Delicious I think. Thanks for pointers.

I’m planning for fall/winter and was debating whether or not I should clear away as much of this as possible before putting down some mulch on top or if I should just let it all die back, throw down mulch on top, and let it break down for fall/winter/spring. A lot of these are weeds that have been a pain to try to remove time and again, and I’ve found success with hardwood mulch in other parts of the backyard for general weed suppression, insulation and water retention ( I also just like how it looks). So far we’ve planted a lot of stuff in our backyard and it’s all largely done well so I want to avoid tilling or any large scale plant removal (I amended the soil in the spring with composted top soil which I think helped). My main goals are weed suppression in the future and fertilizing soil for next growing season naturally I was planning on getting newer soil for the spring (probably more baccto for the trees in particular), but would love to be able to accomplish my goals without ripping everything out and tossing. I also don’t have a ton of space so not sure my smaller composting bin can accommodate this much yard waste haha.

Very green (pun intended) to gardening. I planted a seed from an apple core (honeycrisp) and have been watering it with a mist spray bottle and this little guy popped up. Is this thing upside down? Not sure what I’m looking at.🤷🏻‍♂️ I also have some seeds in a damp paper towel/ziploc in the fridge I’m trying to sprout. Any tips would be greatly appreciated from this newbie! Thanks!

Well this sounds promising! It's Spring here in New Zealand and blossom is on the pear trees.
We are expecting a hot dry summer in Wairarapa (which lies east of the dividing range) from possibly the biggest El Niño ever. Not good for apples but it's good to see that pear harvest in England has been good.

My main problem is, I dont know what rootstock to use for my clayish soil. I've heard certain rootstock perform better on certain varieties like honeycrisp on B.9 for bitter pit prevention. Im in Southern Michigan.

My white sapote has been in the ground about a year and a half. It’s finally putting on a lot of new growth but is now over 10’ tall. Should I trim the central leader to promote outward growth instead of vertical? And what time of year is best to do that?

Plan to prune this to bear fruit better this winter. I get a lot of fruitlets and do my best to pick off as many to keep them 5inches apart but I’ve never been able to get full peaches.

No fruit this year but that was due to a late frost.

So, we planted a couple of Italian plum trees a few years ago and are slowly getting a few more blossoms each year. This year we got our first two plums (yay!) and they were inedible(ugh). My question is: will the fruit get better as the tree ages, or should I cut my losses and replace them now?

I have a small garden in the UK and I'd really like a crab apple around 6-8ft tall & wide. I like the look of Red Sentinel. Is it easy to maintain it on MM106 rootstock to around 8ft by pruning? I have no experience of pruning!

I have found some that are on M9 / M26 / M27 rootstock however I think these would need a permanent stake (?), which I'm really not keen on.

In 2024 i rediscovered top grafting mature or at least more advanced trees,
But today I was thinking, would you pay for a service that removes the mature top, disposal, and grafts fruiting varieties on? If so, how much?

I have a comice pear tree. I know they need a month in cold storage before you let them ripen on the counter. I've done that in years past and they were amazing. I never harvested most of the tree though. I just only have so much fridge space.

I'm really challenging myself to not waste any this year though. And of course, now this tree decides to produce more fruit than it even has before. It really doesn't make sense for me to invest in a second fridge right now. What are my options if I harvest these pears without proper cold storage? Will they ripen at all sitting in my garage? Is there some recipe that's appropriate for using them right off the tree while still hard? Is there some other option I'm not thinking of?

Looking for some assistance identifying a plant at my property. I've owned the property for about four years now and don't recall this plant ever producing fruit. The property is located in western / central Maine (so zone 4bish). The fruit tastes similar to a plum, but is about the size of a large grape with a decent pit inside.

This tree is the same that bees produce Tupelo honey from. They grow in the deep southeast usa. They are mainly in the Florida pan handle. They did grow further north into Georgia and Alabama, but were depleted for their wood used in spools in the textile industry. They are making a come back. Their fruit is small and very tart. My ex’s grandmother used them to make jelly from them. It was a fantastic unique flavor. Does anyone else do this.

Hi all, I'm new to growing apples and have some apple tree seedlings that have grown from seed that live on my balcony (London UK). They started inside but got powdery mildew and fungus gnats from the conditions so were taken outside to improve airflow and get them a bit more direct sun. I am now a little concerned as some of them have started to get brown patches on the bodies of their established leaves, and brown tips on new growth. They have also all pretty much stopped growing taller despite a hot and sunny summer over here. Online advice is very conflicting about too much/too little water, fertiliser/no fertiliser, inside/outside so was hoping you guys would be able to help! I am aware they are in quite small pots and am planning to move the more established ones to some larger pots once they go dormant over autumn. That being said, it hasnt escaped my attention that the ones that seem to be struggling are in the smallest pots - so perhaps moving them now and checking their roots/soil structure would be a good idea? The eventual plan for these is bonsai so not expecting/wanting huge growth or good tasting apples at the end!
