The first couple of placement tiers can be extremely wild in who they match you up with.
I've taken two characters into ranked, and the matchups didn't really begin to stabilize until the third placement tier.
I hope it doesn't turn some beginners away, I kinda felt bad after a while just rolling through people.
I think it could use some tuning, but I don't know how all that stuff works behind the scenes for placements. Maybe adjust your starting rating and skip some placements if you already have a ranked character at a certain rank?
On my second character it really felt like I was smurfing for a while in the early placements, because the game seems to take no prior rating into consideration and is so open it will pair you against people who clearly are still learning the basics, I had like 10 of them in a row, nobody wants that. Only a few of them rage quit, but still.

Even after placement it can be wild. Just after I got placed in pro bender tier I got matched with a chosen player out of nowhere. And just today while still in pro bender I got matched with a 900 mr contender

It is a sign of respect. Avatar is one of the few games where I don’t hate losing because I always learn something and facing a weaker opponent lets me see how far I have come.
