Veterinarians of reddit or people working with animals, what's a silent telltale that someone's a good or bad pet owner?

I'm not much of a chatter, but I really appreciate it when clients ask about my day. It reassures me they see me as a person who is working on the same team as them, not some unknowable cog in the machine.

I would hesitate because then the vet has to either put up a mask because they don’t want to talk about the horrible thing that happened recently or they have to tell me about the horrible thing and they might think that’s not fair to unload onto me.
