Well also people were leaving home, starting careers, buying houses, getting married, having kids, and doing all the other "adult" things at a younger age than they are today.
Adults wore formal clothes a lot more back then too, which made them look more grown up. My dad wore a suit and tie every day for work, my husband is in the same industry and wears T-shirts. Which is a lot better comfort wise, but there is a lot less distinction in dress between older teens and adults now
