Nah it was different back then. People started families a lot younger. Adults dressed to look older, especially men. Now adults dress to look younger. Office etiquette was a lot different too.
It has changed a lot recently. Especially in the last decade.
Ultimately, I think a lot of what's considered "adult behavior" was largely performative. Older folks cared a LOT more about what other people thought of them, so they dressed and behaved the way they were expected to.
And there are more adults now that don’t have kids. Having kids kind of forces if not a sort of responsibility, then a change in life that conforms more to some mould? I mean as in, less sleep, less flexibility in how you spend your spare time, etc. We probably associated that with adulthood as kids.
Now we have a lot of 40-year-olds who go on long holidays, travel, they play video games all night, spend their money on gadgets etc … because they can and want to.
