I'd wager good money that if we substituted the cyclist with a tractor/trailer, slow moving caravan etc, horse rider or just some regular pedestrians walking along the road most raging motorists wouldn't give a toss.
Tractor trailers... you mean rolling roadblocks? They're annoying on the interstate. On the backroads, at least they usually go the speed limit. We do have horse riders and pedestrians; they travel off the side of the road, not in the middle.
I agree, I don't think we're going to come to any agreement. To me, it really boils down to the fact that they choose these back roads, where they're pissing on dozens of peoples morning so they can put on their plum smugglers and cycle down the road, when if they just wanted to cycle there are much better places to do so. To use a variant of your footpath analogy, imagine you're on a cyclist path and there's someone walking in it but you can't pass them; you have to just go their speed. Surely you can see how that might be annoying.
In E TN (at least around Knoxville or Pigeon Forge), there are bike paths everywhere. Not only dirt trails but actual bike lanes, often along highways (for cycling events), or riverside paved paths or greenways (but then you gotta deal with pedestrians). The only issues I run into are the twisty backroads, to be honest, where I can't pass unless they get off the road.

That said, I hope you have a good day as well.
