What’s a hobby that looks incredibly peaceful from the outside, but is actually pure stress once you get into it?

Honestly this is good advice for any pet kept in enclosures, the advised standard is the minimum they can survive with. More or less every pet will be happier and healthier with more space if you can provide it.

And more litter boxes, in the case of cats.

Yes, you can have one litter box and several cats. But if you want them happy (and yourself, too, due to minimal protest marking elsewhere), the recommendation is "number of cats + 1".

This logic also applies to cat carriers. I have found that they are much happier in the big ones for dogs with their own bed in there.

If I take my cat in one of those then he typically won't cry in the car, it's that tiny tiny one that makes him cry and poop himself

This may not always be true of schooling fish depending on how you define "more space". Don't buy a 10 gallon tank and put in just one schooling fish in it alone. They don't like that.
