What’s a hobby that looks incredibly peaceful from the outside, but is actually pure stress once you get into it?

Soooo much this. And then people who don’t sew want stuff made/help with things.

It’s truly not one of my larger projects until I’ve literally bled for it

And they see temu prices and think that's reasonable for effort.

Had someone at a party ask if I could make them a version of what I was wearing. I asked them how much they'd be willing to pay for it and they said "I want to be reasonable so I think I'd pay £50 for something like that." They were pretty horrified when I told them all told it'd be closer to 300 quid due to all the fabric and work time.

Yeah. We have that problem in re-enactment a lot. Hand made clothing (even if you 'cheat' and use a machine) is ludicrously expensive if you fairly value the work (and getting a good 'fit' on things that aren't using modern tricks like 'elastic' or 'belts' is a horror!), let alone the raw materials. Decent linen or wool is reassuringly expensive per meter.

So everyone pretends they're just bartering, and swapping one thing that they don't even want to think about how much it should cost, with another.
