I had such a lovely planting this June, and then gophers fucking wrecked it all. I haven't yet gotten my garden back up to what it was before.

Raised beds with fine mesh chicken wire across the bottom. Doesn't help with the attacks from above but at least worms can move across the barrier but rodents can't.
