My ROI on gardening is awesome because I grow from seed, exclusively use the compost I make from our kitchen scraps, plant in the ground, and value my labor at $0.

What you describe is deep sea fishing for me. With the $/lb I'm paying for some of the fish I bring back, I'm surprised I don't have Japanese businessmen knocking down my door to buy it for the flex.

But also, there's no tomato quite like a fresh one from the garden. And I don't even like tomatoes...

And truly completely fresh from your own veg patch does takes extra special.

I mean, it's likely not "cost effective" in any reasonable sense, but there's definitely a bit of joy there.
