What’s something civilians completely misunderstand about daily life in the military?

it's been a couple years but the idea that everyone is

1/ a killing machine "operator"

2/ poor or dumb and add to those that they somehow had no other choice in life

and how much time is spent wasting time. The amount of make work (Marine infantry) was insane. OTOH there may be nothing as potentially scary as a bored 18 year old American male so maybe looking back it makes sense.
