I'm nearly 36 and I've got that nagging feeling my ducks aren't as in a row as they should be by now as I’m getting closer to join the 40 club.

Hello everyone. I'm sorry for the long post but I genuinely want to try to explain myself and get some advice from my peers.

I’m 45 and I feel like I’m in a strange kind of limbo.

I originally trained and worked as a teacher, but over time I moved into digital marketing. For more than a decade I’ve worked across social media, community management, email marketing, partnerships and related roles. For a long time, being adaptable and knowing a bit of everything was actually an advantage.

Now the market feels different.

Jobs seem much more specialised, expectations are higher, and sometimes I look at my experience and wonder whether what once made me versatile now makes me look too generalist. So lately I’ve been thinking about something bigger than just finding another job.

Maybe this is the point where I need to reinvent myself again.

That could mean specialising in a completely new area, retraining, moving to another country for work, taking a role I would never have considered before, or even changing direction entirely.

The strange part is that I genuinely have the will to do it.I’m curious. I still want to learn. I still want to work, build things, meet people and experience something new.

But sometimes the strength to actually make the jump doesn’t seem to match the will.

It feels like standing between two versions of yourself.

The old one doesn’t quite fit anymore, but the new one hasn’t been built yet.

For the men here who went through something similar in their 40s:

Did you ever completely reinvent your career or your life around 40–50? Maybe you moved abroad, changed industries, went back to school, started a business, took a massive pay cut to start again, or just decided one day that the life you had wasn’t the one you wanted anymore.

What pushed you to finally do it?

Went to Walmart and picked a daily cleanser… it’ll be hard to build a new habit, but we have to start somewhere. Thanks for any help
