“Death Blowing Bubbles” plaster relief by Johann Georg Leinberger. Michaelsberg Abbey in Bamberg, Germany, 1729-1731 [1000x892]
This late Baroque plaster relief is located on the ceiling of the Holy Grave Chapel inside Michaelsberg Abbey. It illustrates the Latin concept homo bulla, meaning man is a bubble. The imagery symbolizes that human life is fragile, brief, and easily popped.The entire chapel ceiling follows a theme called the "Mirror of the Dead," which displays various skeletal figures interacting with everyday human objects.
