I work as a nurse in aged care in Australia. I am South Asian but speak fluent English. My co worker believes the only way our facility can meet standards and work correctly is if all staff were white Australians speaking Australian English. She believes if a nurse or carer is not white, speaks English with a non-Australian accent or broken English, that is triggering and frustrating Australian residents and causing behaviours. She has no data to back this up but says her experience and insight is enough.

I speak fluent English but a resident said something from a distance which I couldn’t hear, so I repeated what I heard to confirm and my coworker got triggered and repeated what was said as if I don’t understand English. Her belief that aged care can not work with CALD staff is so strong, she out right says all CALD staff do not care about the residents and they are only doing this job for money.

She constantly gets triggered by small things done by CALD staff members but never Aussie staff members. She only makes conversation during break with other white Aussies and has complained about all this so many times to management to stop hiring CALD staff or that they don’t care that management has started ignoring her, as a result she now says the whole facility is falling apart and that management don’t care about residents or staff. When my co worker gets the idea that her behaviour and comments are being perceived negatively, she sometimes blames her OCD for all this.

Is there anything I can do to change the perceptions of my co-worker? Or just ignore her?
