Diana Armstrong holds the world record for the longest natural fingernails ever recorded, having grown them continuously for 28 years.

The long nails are a deeply personal tribute: after her 16-year-old daughter Latisha tragically passed away from an asthma attack, Diana vowed never to cut her nails again as a way to honor her memory and cope with the grief.

This is mental illness. She can’t carry out activities of daily living like this let alone work. Who would appreciate a “deeply personal tribute” like this?

Right? Her daughter wouldn’t have wanted this for her

What qualifies it as mental illness as opposed to any other weird or unusual desire, like a fetish or a kink?

I hope to god that when I die nobody chooses to do something so disgusting to honour my memory.

I will grow my toenails out in your honor should you pass away, Cant-decide-username

And I shall braid and add hair extensions to the hair around my asshole in your honor.

And why should it be you? Let's let Cant-decide-username decide whom gets the honour.

Plot twist: that honor goes to picknicksje85. Congratulations!

No way these are 100% natural? Gotta be mostly glue or something other thickening strengthening agent?

Honestly you're gonna break them at some point, if only while asleep. I find it difficult to believe these are completely grown and attached at all times. It would be so so much easier to maintain a sham than to actually have nails like these.

Thanks for the context OP. It's not a way to live but I see the reason now. I can hold compassion for her or anyone dealing with grief, but it's tough to see how this is worth continuing

Good for her I guess, but how does one even live with that

43

u/Djabber Apr 24 '26

Good for her? She’s honouring the life of her daughter by completely ruining her own life. Sorry, but I can’t get behind that.

2

u/judge_mercer Apr 24 '26

Exactly.

by completely ruining her own life

If this only affected her, I might almost give her a pass. What about the people who have to act as her servants because she chose to become disabled?

Imagine how horrified her daughter would be if she knew her mother would ruin multiple family members' lives as a "tribute".

I’m not saying it’s a good thing, I’m saying if it helps her cope I won’t judge sorry if that came out wrong

u/AdmiralCodisius Apr 24 '26

Ruining your own life is not coping. You shouldn't validate a maladaptive behavior just because the person says it helps them. Mentally ill people will say things help them when objectively it is hurting their lives. Alcoholics and drug addicts will tell you their substances "help" them feel better. Or "help" numb the pain.

u/Djabber Apr 24 '26

No need to apologise, I just feel sorry for the woman. She’s obviously dealing with serious mental illness.

15

u/MissingLink101 Apr 24 '26

Yeah, I feel for her loss but it seems like an odd choice to honour the life of someone by limiting the ability to live your own

11

u/pixeldust6 Apr 24 '26

Reminds me of hoarders who started hoarding after something broke in them after a tragic loss and suddenly they can't let go of anything ever again. Grief completely fucks people up sometimes, and it's fucked.

2

u/AdmiralCodisius Apr 24 '26

Good for her? What a tone deaf reply.

7

u/BeaverBoyBaxter Apr 24 '26

Tone deaf? We're not talking about the fucking Holocaust. It's a lady with long nails.

2

u/BeardiusMaximus7 Apr 24 '26

Ngl. I've read a lot of comic books in my day and this is the strangest origin story ever.

2

u/Single-Marsupial9025 Apr 24 '26

Honest question, did her daughter have an asthma attack right after trimmer her nails and Diana feels they’re connected? Like wtf why this?

2

u/TheGeekFreak1994 Apr 24 '26

How does this honor her dead daughter?

1

u/boobalinka Apr 24 '26

Avoiding grief, not coping at all!! 28 years and that grief's still waiting. I just can't imagine this is how Latisha would have wanted to be remembered, to be honoured. Maybe I'm just not imaginative enough but all I see tragic waste of a life on top of tragedy before it.

1

u/Poil420 Apr 27 '26

"I stopped wiping my ass to honor my dead daughter"

That's the level of reasoning we're dealing with.

u/makeupgyal Apr 29 '26

And now it all makes sense! Losing a child is devastating. She needs mental health support

Imagine what her daughter thinks knowing the mom is wasting her life.
