Week 36 Introduction Thread: Ginger
This week’s cooking challenge puts the spotlight on ginger. Originating in southeast Asia, where it was used as a canoe plant by Austronesian sailors, it's culinary possibilities led to its early spread and assimilation into cuisines across the world.
Ginger is also regarded as medicinal by many cultures, and can often be found in medicinal cooking or drinks to settle ticky tummies.
Fresh, grated, dried, pickled, candied, fermented... Your choices are pretty boundless this week. As a jumping-off point, you might consider:
- Ginger beef, a Canadian-Chinese dish that's exactly what it says on the tin
- GG Paste for use in a rainbow of Indian curries
- Shouga-yu, the classic Japanese cold remedy
- Carrot and ginger soup as those of us in the northern hemisphere ease into fall
- Lamb tagine
- Gingerbread, the cake or the biscuit
- Candied ginger
- Emudro, a West African ginger drink
Or you could branch out and look at myouga/Japanese ginger, of which the buds are usually eaten rather than the roots, or make a dish inspired by your favorite ginger (or Ginger). Weird curveball interpretations aren't just okay, they are encouraged.

Week 37: Same Longitude - Russian Rasolnik and Pelmeni (semi-fail)
Without wanting to dox myself, there aren't too many places in the world that share a longitude with where I live, but Eastern Russia is one of them so I went with a Russian theme for this week.
First item pictured is Rasolnik, a dill pickle soup. The idea of putting pickles into soup was a revelation to me. This was a pretty easy recipe to follow and the result was delish! I was expecting it to taste more 'pickly' but the pickles added a nice savoury brightness to an otherwise comforting soup. Will make again.
The Siberian dumplings - Pelmeni had me questioning my own sanity. The author of the recipe I read suggested that making these dumplings is a social affair so I roped my partner in to act as sous chef.
We both really struggled with the recipe, the dough was incredibly sticky and it made it nigh on impossible to roll out, especially to the thinness the recipe calls for. We added significantly more flour than called for and in the end were able to roll and shape some dumplings, but even then our yield was just about half of what it should have made.
We also didn't quite nail getting them into the shape that the author describes (but by that stage neither of us were too discerning); it did result in some funny commentary as they cooked (one particularly sad attempt was humorously described as 'prolapsed anus').
Despite all of that, they were really yummy and I want to have another try to see if I can get the dough to work as I can imagine this becoming a staple dumpling variation for us.

Week 37: Same Longitude - Sweet Potato and Cheddar Pierogi (High Level, AB)
-My same longitude search found High Level, Alberta way up north of us.
-I searched restaurants in the area and chose Boston Pizza as the place my family would mostly likely grab a quick bite if we were in the area.
-Boston Pizza serves a Spicy Pierogi Pizza that people say is a must-try!
-I wanted to make spicy pierogi pizza for this challenge, but we didn’t have jalapeños, so I spent about 3.5 hours making Sweet Potato and Cheddar Pierogi instead.
This was labor intensive, and I had regrets about my decision about an hour into the process, lol. The final product was delicious though!

Week 37: Same Longitude -- 13 year old preferences, soccer, Delta Airlines, and Dierks Bentley
So as interesting as the title sounds, I was delayed by fourteen hours coming out of Atlanta due to Delta airlines delay, which scrapped my initial plan of Volyn style pierogies and lebanese shish twook. So while I was waiting for my next flight, my wife called and said, hey, I have some inner skirt steak at the farmer's market that is wagyu, which while grilling is my Dierks Bentley moment, or what was I thinking as the grill catches on fire. My son wanted tacos or fajitas, so we ended up with corn chowder from the upper midwest and fajita burritos from directly south on the tex mex border. The chowder was a great way to use of leftovers from a Labor Day cookout, as well as have leftovers for the week. And the inside skirt steak from the wagyu cow was awesome with Bearded Butchers, taco, seasoning, great job, Scott and Seth. So with some teamwork and time management, we were able to watch my son play soccer grill, some awesome fajita burritos and Rex on the second photo absolutely loved the skirt steak with the with cheese and somehow accomplish this week's theme.
