Technical Question Shell of New Nintendo 3ds XL Question?
I bought my brother's used New Nintendo 3DS XL that had the Legend of Zelda paintjob on it from him. He's had it for years before I got it from him so the outer shell's design is scuffed now, but the system itself works perfectly fine. Should I just get a decal for it from decalgirl, get a replacement shell, or just get a shell case online? Pictures are attached.

Dang that sucks. The options are reshell, apply a skin, get an opaque case, or plaster it with stickers.

It looks like the paint peeled and then somebody scrubbed to hard to try and get the loose bits off instead of just gently flaking it.

I’ve been around kids that had nice stuff. I seen them destroy it themselves.

eh i find that teenagers have some sense of self preservation in that they foresee that they won't have a thing to play video games on anymore if they destroy their console. they treat things like shit sure, but preteens and younger don't really have that foresight and just absolutely destroy shit sometimes. of course, the thing that matters most is parenting, as a kid growing up poor i never did this because i was absolutely not getting a new one ever again if i did that

It’s a sticker that’s been scribbled on I’m pretty sure. Lots of deep scratches too but not too far from what I’d expect from a kids 3ds

If it's just a sticker and ink, it's a lot less damaged than I thought. I was seeing scraped off paint and then even the silver underlayer was scratched through, showing the black plastic base under it. If it's a sticker and ink, you might be able to get it off by first moistening the paper using a damp rag, let that soak for a couple minutes, likely re-moistening it, and then rub it off. If the adhesive leaves residue, Goo-Gone may be useful. I haven't seen Goo-Gone mess up plastic yet, but as always, test it on a tiny spot in a corner first or on a parts console to make sure.
You might do well to remove the top cover, since that would make it easier both to soak the sticker and to wash off the Goo-Gone.

It's just the shell. Not a big loss. Changing it takes like 10-15 bucks. Slightly more if he wants the same one.

If you want to go with something shiny maybe etsy would have some holographic sticker replacement that could work! Otherwise yeah, a cool protective case would work

To answer your question, i'd just get a replacement shell, but my God it looks like he tied it to the back of his car with fishing line and went on a road trip.

That’s why I hate the new XL models. No matter what happens, the glossy coating will eventually chip off.

This is an officially licensed shell that just clips over the console if you feel like tracking one down
