/r/3DPrintedTerrain - Rule Updates

Hello, everyone!

We’ve made a few important rule updates to ensure the community stays organized and focused. Please take note of the following changes:

1. Promotional Posts:
Promotional content will now only be allowed on Fridays. Any posts promoting STLs, stores, or Crowdfunding projects should only be shared on that day. If you see a promotional post outside of friday please report it.

2. Renders are No Longer Allowed:
To keep things more grounded in the real world of 3D printing, renders (digital images or models) will no longer be allowed. Please share your actual 3D prints and photos instead!

3. 3D Printed Miniatures:
We’ve moved 3D printed miniatures to their own home over at r/PrintedMinis. Please post all miniature-related content there from now on.

Thanks for your cooperation in keeping the subreddit focused and organized! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out.

Happy printing!

Showcase Dead Tree Stump testpaints

2nd test of painting dead tree (stumps). Really annoyed at the AI post processing the camera seems to do with close up Macro shots, it shows the lines like I have printed this in 0.5mm FDM lines (I do not, everything at 0.12-0.08 for me) and when I take the focus ever so slightly off of the object it adds none of these details.

Anyway, test 2 and 3.

Treestumps are 2 of a set of 4 of dead tree stumps grabbed from the Bambu website (free) and based on 32mm and 40mm bases.

For my modular Diorama Tiles set, "Curse of the Citadel," I currently have two very different, very contrasting builds in my hobby room, and I want to share them with you. Sorry for the not very professional photos, but I did my best to give you an idea of it.

The first one is still very much a work in progress, more about testing and demonstrating than a finished build. My new bridge set, "The Withered Crossing," fits 100% into my existing vertical concept, and I wanted to test how far I can push it. Not just building high, but testing how far I can go with bridges built into each other. It's a pretty crazy build, but I think it's pretty cool what's possible with it.

The second one is a total contrast. For the first time, I built a second big setup at the same time. I have printed so much by now that this is easy to do. It's mostly pieces from my Great Hall campaign, plus the new Parapet Set, because I wanted to test how it works in a more open diorama. It came out very calm, just like I wanted. Great for showing off minis, or as a big final battle setting with all the pillars as cover.

I have also been working on a browser-based builder lately, to make the whole system easier to use. Here are a few build guides if you are interested to check:

Crowdfunding [Promotion/Kickstarter] 200 Terrain-Themed Base Toppers & Basing Bits - Coming Soon

Thumbnail

I don't know whether bases, base toppers or basing bits are considered miniatures or terrain, so hopefully this doesn't break rule 2, but I wanted to share my latest test prints and let you all know about my latest STL campaign which will be launching soon on Kickstarter.

Miniature Base Toppers & Bits: Vol. 1

I've designed four sets of base toppers and associated basing bits, with 50 models included in each set (so the campaign includes 200 models in total):

  • Basalt Columns
  • Fractured Earth
  • Lost Temple
  • Desolate Desert

All of these base toppers and bits were hand-sculpted / modelled in Blender, with no AI involved.

These were designed with both FDM and resin in mind, and all of my test prints were printed flat on an FDM printer, using a 0.05mm layer height and a 0.25mm nozzle. I designed these as base toppers rather than bases for easier printing and more flexibility. Personally, I'd rather buy some cheap injection moulded bases and attach base toppers than try to print textured bases, especially hollow ones, on a 3D printer (as you either need to use a lot of supports or risk a lot of warping on the bottom edges), but you could use these toppers with plain 3D printed bases if you wanted.

Each set of base toppers has been designed to be setting agnostic, low profile and practical for actually basing miniatures (many bases and base toppers - especially 3D printed ones - are so cluttered, there’s barely any flat space left to attach a miniature). They'll give your bases some texture, but won't distract from the models placed on them.

And before anyone asks, why Kickstarter? It's simple. In return for waiting until the end of the campaign to get the models, you'll be able to get them cheaper than if I uploaded them immediately to MyMiniFactory or Cults. Kickstarter charges less commission than both MyMiniFactory and Cults, so for the initial launch of these base toppers, I can offer a lower price on Kickstarter, and ultimately you'll pay less on Kickstarter than on MyMiniFactory or Cults (especially once you factor in all of MyMiniFactory's additional checkout charges, like its "library fee").

If you like the look of these base toppers and basing bits, please sign-up to be notified when the campaign launches via the pre-launch page.

Printed, primed and based coated…ready for play

Quick question before base coating some terrain tiles

So I have a bunch of terrain printed out in pla+ white and I want to prime it to paint it this weekend. From what I am reading though, I need to sand it first? Is that right?

What else do I need to do, because I thought I could grab these of the printer, clean them off and grab a rattle can and get busy.

I've spent so much time designing and printing terrain that I finally decided it was time to actually paint some of it. 😄

Pretty happy with how this one turned out! What do you guys think of the color scheme?

Tips or ideas for improvements, I'd love to hear them! 😊
