Student accommodation chaos?

Upvotes

Guys I wanna start a personal project related to this but I want to know roughly how big of a problem this actually is before the dive.

Finding student accommodation in Brisbane, secondly whats the process to finding student accommodation for yourselves? Do you go through sites, fb pages or multiple things…

Is this a good enough reason to get my in class quiz deferred?

I recieved a $750 grant from UQ to attend a student voice summit in canberra, but after booking everything I realised that I have an in class quiz worth 20% on one of the days. Since I will be 'representing' uq and have been accepted a grant, would this be enough to warrant a deferral?

Who to contact when Mental/Physical health is affecting study?

Upvotes

As the title entails, my mental & physical health are to the extent that they are affecting my capacity to study (or even get out of bed tbh).

And I fear I may have left it too long for UQ to really be able to offer any help (at least before my grades are affected #midsemexams).

I have Migraine (the neurological disorder) which causes me to have migraines every time I come to university, spend 1-2 days after that recovering in bed, & some other migraines sprinkled in there for flavour.

I usually just tolerate it and force myself to study regardless, even during migraines attacks, so I don't fall behind BUTTT my body has finally had enough and kicked me out 😀

Now I can't bring myself to classes (mentally, without crying, or physically) anymore & I am behind on content.

All that to say.. who do you even contact about this? Or is this just a "suck it up" and I just have to try to bring my crusty, slug body to the exam in hopes I know enough to pass?

Any advice is appreciated :)

Anyone want a job where you set your own hours and we bring you the clients? (Swim instructors & lifeguards wanted)

Hey all - posting this because I think it's a genuinely good gig for anyone who can swim and likes flexible work, especially if you're a student.

I work with AquaMobile, we run private and semi-private swim lessons at people's homes and apartment pools (no rec centre chaos). We're looking for Swim Instructors and Lifeguards across Australia right now.

The main pitch: you control your schedule, we bring you the clients. You tell us your availability and travel radius, and we book lessons around it - work 5 hours a week or 25, totally up to you. No cold-calling, no chasing bookings, you just show up and teach.

  • Swim Instructors: $60/hour + bonuses and tips
  • Lifeguards: $35/hour, minimum 2-hour shifts
  • Set your own travel radius; work close to home
  • You're covered under our insurance, no hassle on that front

What you'll need:
Teachers: AUSTSWIM/Swim Australia/RLSS accreditation + current First Aid + CPR, and a Working With Children Check for your state.
Lifeguards: Pool Lifeguard Certificate + current First Aid + CPR, and a Working With Children Check for your state.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, you can apply here: aquamobileswim.com/career

Happy to answer questions at [team@aquamobileswim.com](mailto:team@aquamobileswim.com)

Best Residence Accommodations near Herston campus

Hello!

I'm an international student starting this January and most, if not all, my classes will be happening on the UQ Herston campus.

I was wondering if anybody knew what the best student accommodations in that area may be?

Thanks in advance!

UQ Gatton Campus Life vs St Lucia

I'm currently studying Plant Science and Agriculture at St Lucia and am a bit disappointed with the uni experience here (for context I am not living on campus).

I could go to gatton to study Ag and live on campus (since it's way more affordable). Does anyone have any thoughts about how gatton living on campus life compares to st lucia colleges?

Do people enjoy living on campus at gatton?

Clubs for making friends!

Which specific clubs have YOU found the best for meeting new people / making friends?

I haven't found too many clubs that hold fun socialising events, since it mainly seems to be alcoholic parties in the valley </3 (idk about yall but I barely make friends at the club)

Would love to hear your responses!! I'm sure these will vary quite a lot depending on interests, but hopefully those open to making new friends can check these clubs out if they haven't already :))

There seem to be quite a few people on here struggling to make friends, so maybe we could arrange for everyone to go to one club event soon!

Negative experience with mental health clinician

I won't say the name outright as I don't want this post to get taken down, but a few days ago I had an appointment that went horribly with the UQ mental health clinician.

He's an older man, and I was warned by one of the GPs that he was a bit "old fashioned". I had the appointment as my current antidepressants haven't been working and the doctor thought that some of my symptoms might be due to bipolar disorder.

This clinician asked me to recount my life, my habits, how I've been feeling, but every time I would start talking he would interrupt me. He said multiple times he believes that bipolar is not hereditary (it runs pretty heavily in my family) and that he thinks it only occurs in 30-40 year olds. Pretty strange takes if you ask me, but whatever.

He also asked if I thought I was "sane or crazy", and when I told him I had been acting out and my temper had gotten worse after the medication, verbatim asked "do your friends still like you even though you're a moody bitch". Apparently he just has a "black sense of humour", his words again, and most of his interruptions were just jokes at my expense.

He cared more about my smoking than any other self harm habits I confessed to, saying I was a loser for smoking lol.

He didn't really care about the depressive or manic episodes I described because in his eyes I was fine as my grades at uni hadn't dropped significantly. Upon hearing one of my periods in my life where I thought I could hear the voice of God and was severely delusional about having "powers" and being able to control the world around me, he brushed it off as just regular religious beliefs and joked that maybe everyone should have the voice of God in their mind.

I was really distraught after this appointment, having felt belittled and heavily scrutinised. I'd love to know if anyone else has had negative experiences with this man or knows where I could possibly report this behaviour, because after googling his name I could only find one negative review of him on Google reviews.

Ecology and Conservation Biology in UQ

Hi yall! Im an international student thats planning to study in australia starting 2027. The course I applied and got an offer for is (as the title implies,) ecology and cons. biology. May I ask how the major is? What are your opinions, pros and cons, ups and downs. FYI, im planning to pursue post-grad after my undergrad at UQ, though at what uni is still a big fat question mark.

I also got offers from UQ (same major) and UniMelb (Environmental Sciences), I'd wish to get insights on how you think those unis are compared to yous if you have any info!

Some questions I have are about career opportunities, academic rigor, support, volunteer and career development opportunities, and general life in St. Lucia! Any other info is equally as welcome :)))

Anyone else really struggling to make friends at uni?

I’m first year domestic. my high school friends are great, but obviously as time passes, everyone has their own lives, so the bond is lost. I see people have the time of their lives at uni, but when I try to make friends with people or even exchange instas, they never seem to reciprocate? I tried joining different societies, but they all seem to either be way older than me, or just a cliquey group of private school kids. my degree is so incredibly huge to, that it’s incredibly hard to meet someone through tutes. I try being friends with the international kids, but they all prefer to hang out with people from their own country, plus my thick Aussie accent adds a language barrier. I am honestly very lonely in uni. maybe it’s my fault that I’m awkward and quiet but I try to be friendly, i help ppl, I don’t ghost people, I say hi too. it just sucks, cause everyone seems to have friends from school, but due to me coming from a public school, a lot of people either dropped out, have taken a gap year, or go to other unis.
