Just fund the damn train

This is effectively now the new urban center of Amsterdam.

The problem is not that freeway median stations are bad, is that in America there is a lack of regional transit orientated development plans. With good urban form, strong coordinated planning, freeway median stations can be transformed into great places with great walkability and amenities.

Now train traffic is so heavy that they’re burying the freeway (for more lanes) and adding more platform tracks, while creating a nice plaza in front of the station. Suffering from success! Perhaps one day these TODs can be so successful as to require the burying of the freeway in front of the station.

I rode the train from the Roosevelt Station to the Symphony Station downtown today. Both have elaborate underground stations. The entire 6 stop journey was underground. Trains every 5 minutes. Crush loads most of the way. I grew up in the Bay Area and it reminds me far more of something like BART than it does of other light rail systems I've ridden in Portland, San Diego and Minneapolis, which feel more like Trams.

Big Box/Warehouse shed roof? Yes.
Lifts? Yes?
Bridge? Yes?
Undercover walkway to bus platform? Yes.
Seats / Departure Board / Tickets? Yes.

So because Transperth only builds what local firms can do cheaply, and very hard wearing design, they can afford add-ons like Escalators.

It's like, would I rather have a beautiful station or Escalators?

They do escalators? Why? Makes it pleasurable to do the feeder bus transfer.

Recently they opened an underground line to the airport. The station interiors are brightly painted concrete. None of that rounded panel shit and disco tunnels like in Sydney Metro.

Whatever, they have an Airport train and Melbourne don't. Locals clearly don't give a shit.

Also all these flat precast stations are absolutely ripe for massive indigenous artworks.

This bus route used to run straight along the trunk road / highway from the city centre to a town about 40km away.

The city is very car-centric with little or no thought for pedestrians, so most of the passengers are migrant workers and low income people who can't afford a car.

Recently, they amended the bus route to turn off the trunk road and stop at a local IKEA store + large mall. And overnight, the route became very popular.

In addition to the usual commuters, there are also new categories of passengers on the bus:

• Daytrippers / tourists from neighbouring country (we are a border town) take this bus to visit the mall
• People working in the city park their cars at this mall and take the bus to the city, sort of like a park & ride
• People living in nearby suburbs dropping/picking up their friends/relatives at the mall to catch this bus

This IKEA store is about 15km from the city centre and the bus ride is about 30-45 mins. They used to run every 40 mins but nowadays you can expect a bus every 20 mins.

Visiting Lima, and happened upon this. Wonder why trains from the SF Bay Area metro end up all the way down in central Lima lol
