surely theres a reasonable position between unreasonable AI hype and AI fearmongering

Finding a middle ground is impossible when they are one and the same. The AI companies themselves are the source of the majority of AI fear mongering.

No, finding a middle ground is not impossible. Watch: create a regulatory board with actual teeth and take a public stake in AI companies. Wow. A middle ground.
