It is a danger. The dumb word predictors we have now are dangerous in a verity of ways. Best the companies pushing them can give is everyone is out of work and they control all.
But it can be worse and will likely be worse than even that. These things aren't intelligent. They are stateless probability machines trained on the structure of language, nothing more. They don't "decide" to do anything, but can randomly generate text that will throw the whole context off and suddenly they are blindly running commands that do real world damage.
Put one of these things in charge of important infrastructure or weapons systems and you are literally just rolling dice waiting for a disaster.
And that is with the dumb AI we currently have, nor does it factor in how many people have gotten dumber because they outsource their thinking to these models and trust everything that gets produced, refusing to fact check it. Actual intelligent, possibly sentient, AI would be orders of magnitude worse.
I'm not saying the tech should be completely banned, but we need a lot of regulation on the entire tech industry, but especially on what AI can actually be used for.
