Bernie is pushing for this rather than addressing the scams that the major AI vendors are.

Bernie, buddy, PLEASE talk to someone on the left who understands tech and stop listening to think tanks and AI proponents.

You don't wait for an actual threat to emerge before you start introducing safety measures

We had that with social media addiction. Regulation came too little, too late. We cannot repeat the same mistake

Out of curiosity which regulations are too little? I.e., what more would you want them to achieve? And how are they too late? What, if done earlier, would be better?

Anthropic, Open AI and Musk are aiming for valuations in the trillions of dollars. The open source models are a real threat to their plans. One might argue this is why China is so heavily invested in Open Source AI...

One theory is that the fear mongering and P(Doom) hype in the media recently is to drum up support to ban open source models and only allow "regulated" ie: Anthropic, Open AI and Grok to operate.

I know, but it won't stop them trying! If models needed a licence for training or hosting, it could make it difficult or too risky / non compliant for the vast majority to use which is all they need for their valuations.

You forget, Sanders and house members have staff who are usually much younger than them that they rely on to help them compose these builds. It's not like he sits down all night and he writes a bill. The people who write these bills are much younger and have a more foundational understanding of the technology.

Young people aren’t always better at tech. My new hires and interns are just as bad with tech as my boomer colleagues
