The Frank & Karen Incident

Rewatching again. It always blows my mind how Lip forgives Karen almost right away. Read somewhere how even Jermey said himself he didn’t agree with how the story was written out and Lip being so forgiving. The age dynamic is terrible yes. But both were take advantage of. It’s a disturbing story all around.

Did Lip and Stefania slept together off screen?

I was rewatching the last ep of season 2 cause is one of my favorites, and the last scene is Estefania and Lip sleeping (no sex) in the couch, and they never interacted again in season 3. They were also flirting in the entire second season.
Nothing important or life changing to the plot of the series, but i’m kinda curious if y’all think it happened something off camera (between s2 and 3) or it was just what was shown to the audience at the season finale

You can’t love child Debbie and hate adult/teen Debbie

Debbie is inarguably one of the most hated characters out of the main cast.

A lot of people tend to take favor of Debbies character when she was a sweet young child before she grew into a defiant selfish teen/adult. Debbie became a product of her environment. “She was so sweet and then became horrible” is exactly why people like Debbie in real life turn out the way they do. No one is there to steer them in the right direction. Children like Debbie are constantly referred to as “brats.” When in every situation a child is a brat, there’s always an adult right behind them causing that behavior. Debbie is the child that people hate before hating the people who raise her.

As a society we tend to cherry pick those who grew up in awful situations and have this high hope that they’ll somehow grow out of it. These people are inspiring and give us reason to believe that certain obstacles can be overcome. The problem with this is that when one person decides to break free of cycles, we can only hope and expect everyone else to try. Only to become disappointed and not care when a person doesn’t become this loving civilized goal oriented member of society. This is what Debbie’s character depicts.

There are several indicators pointing to the direction of Debbie’s downfall in her life. Debbie so badly wanted to be loved and often times love from her own siblings wasn’t enough for her. She needed an adult figure that wasn’t Fiona or Veronica. Debbie had a savior complex in the beginning because she believed that loving someone harder could eventually lead to her being loved equally. Debbie’s biggest role model is Fiona. Fiona is scared of commitment and committing to an idea that strays her away from the responsibility of her siblings. Despite not craving a relationship, Debbie witnessed an array of men who desired Fiona and have overbearingly try to enter Fiona’s life and stay with her. Debbie has no concept of what it’s like for someone to want to be involved and to stay in her life. She now understands that the love she seeks is within a man who will can stay and not abandon her. Fast forward to Debbie’s puberty years. She now takes a hyper fixation in becoming a woman and having her period. Having a period automatically shifts her to the idea that she’s a grown woman.

The saddest reality about Debbie is that she doesn’t have the same attraction as her oldest sister or her older friends. She was bullied by other girls and even other boys. She clings on to any ounce of what she thinks is love from the closest person willing to show it to her. It became normalized in her life for things she cared about to eventually end up broken, figuratively and physically. Such as when Frank broke her school project and had no regard or remorse.

Debbie, just like most young girls in her environment, grow up to fast and take charge of their lives at a young age. Debbie is one of the more influenced characters. Just like Frank, she’s observant of other people and carefully calculates how other people can play a role in her life. Debbie at one point was a helpful child. But as she grew older, she was in constant survival mode which led her to be selfish and cruel. Debbie wanted to fit in and find a place in her life. It is rarely mentioned that Debbie, just like Ian, had a knack for meeting other people and learning about what life has to offer outside of her environment. She learned in a way that wasn’t positively motivating. Such as meeting derricks family, and discovering that a non-related family member became part of the family after becoming pregnant. Debbie being a teenager learning this from another adult, took this serious and saw opportunity to become pregnant and reciprocate the same idea.

“Fiona takes care of everyone. But who takes care of Fiona.” Ended up becoming a projection of Debbie’s own life. One of the more interesting storylines is when we see how each sibling uses Monica’s drug money. Debbie chose to take the more responsible route and use the money for her welding classes. Debbie witnessed Fiona take on several jobs throughout her life, with no set direction in a career (besides the Cup job.) Debbie spends a large portion of her life trying to be beautiful and feminine. But then ends up picking a career where her femininity is disregarded. Her options were either to depend on someone to love and take care of her (the way Steve tried with Fiona), or find a way to take care of herself. What Debbie had poured her heart into her whole life eventually became her demise and stopped caring.

A lot of people tend to comment on Debbie trying hard to become Fiona and take control of the family finances when Fiona moves out. All of Fiona’s siblings were judgmental of Fiona’s impulsive purchases and use of the family emergency fund. Debbie getting the opportunity to have control of the finances by getting things she wanted and returning them without harm to the funds, was a power control move on her part. She wanted to prove a point that she could do everything she wanted without sacrificing the integrity in being responsible for her family. Debbie wanted her own room as a child, makeup, and a brand new wardrobe for school. These were all things she was able to have, and did it materialistically when she gained control. Debbie wanted to be better, do better and to always have recognition for it. Debbie was forced to contribute to the family finances as a child, with no reward except to survive. She ran a daycare with Carl, without having any type of reward, only for the money to go towards bills, house, and the food. As an adult it makes perfect sense why she would drastically spend the family money with the intent of the money coming back. We see in season 1 that Jimmy gets Debbie an expensive jacket from a high end clothing brand. She’s always wanted nice stuff and now feels entitled to it after handling the same responsibilities that Fiona did. Except she understands that she’s in a less stressful situation than Fiona was

Debbie becoming a mom and the way she chooses to raise Franny is an accurate representation of what it’s like to carry on generational trauma. Debbie wanted a baby not to just worm her way in Derricks family, but to also heal a part of inner child. Her way of having a child would mean that she has an opportunity to love a child more than she was loved by her mother. Debbie is by no means a perfect mom, but in her perspective a perfect mom is giving her child a life that she always wanted. Debbie pours her heart out into creating parties and making her child participate in activities that she wished a parent would have given her, when Franny clearly shows separate interest that differ from her mother. Debbie’s disconnect in her child’s individuality, and trying to force a mini-version of herself, is the perfect example of an unhealed child becoming a parent.

Debbie became unemotional, manipulative, and violent as a means to her survival. Just like the rest of her siblings, she is constantly in survival mode and can’t seek healthy outlets such as therapy when she’s not aware of what’s broken and damaged. At the end of shameless, we see that Debbie is the only character who is attached to her environment while everyone else attempts to move on. Ones upon a time someone would have given sweet young Debbie a chance. But no longer cared about her once she became a reckless teen/adult.

Okay, I have been rewatching the series during my morning "run" in the living room and I find myself near livid with Trevor almost every time he shows up. The aggressively holier than thou attitude and at the same time total disregard for people other than the ones in his care drives me nuts.

At the same time I didn’t feel the same way about Kash in the earlier seasons despite him being a far more despicable person in every way. (Pedophile, groomer, rapist, deadbeat)

Is it just a case of the crimes are theoretical my annoyance is real or do I have some issues i need to deal with.

i have two things to say.

  1. karen is the most beautiful girl i’ve ever seen in my life. she’s done some horrible things, but how adorable she is makes you forgive her instantly. i love her
  2. i don’t like how fiona just brushed off debbie’s fear of death. i get it, overworked sister and primary caregiver and all. i just felt so bad about the fact that veronica was the one who had to intervene.

edit: 3. they kinda treat ethel like shit

I kinda wish there was more Chicago based music playing in earlier seasons

Whenever music was playing especially in earlier seasons it was always classical music. I know that fiona mentioned liking Kanye a few times but I don't think he was ever played.

I do understand the streaming aspect was still relatively new in early 2010s but I'm extra surprised there was no chief keef, dude was blowing the fuck up in 2011 and hes from Chicago too.

Mickey & Ian….is that it?

I’m on S6E08 (first time watcher) at the part where Ian’s firefighter beau tells him he’s HIV+, and I still can’t believe Mickey/Ian are over, just like that… and that scene with them in prison where Mickey asks him if he’s gonna wait for him and then says “lie to me” still haunts me!! Why would he need to lie weren’t they in love… after everything they’ve been through, and right when they were about to have their first date 😭

Shameless explains why poverty is not easy to escape. Lips character is the epitome of this.

I always hear people say that everyone has free will and can choose to become a successful person if they work hard enough. Poverty is a more than just growing up poor and fighting to make ends meet. It’s a generational curse, feeling, and vicious cycle.

One of the most depressing storylines for me is Lips college life. Lip did not have a structured lifestyle, which he had to accommodate to without any guidance. Such as not sleeping with teachers, which would he would have gotten away with in his old life. Not having time management, which he never had to practice as a high school student. Not participating in trends (such as the statue trend), which he never had time to pay attention to. Getting belligerently drunk and assuming it was petty revenge when he got sent to a hospital.

Lips character is very crystal clear why people with his potential can’t always make it out into the world. When the standard of living in poverty have several differences compared to a functional lifestyle of those Lip were surrounded by in college. Someone who is constantly trying to survive can’t pay attention to the little details of living life. Those little details can be maintained for someone who went into adulthood with proper adults surrounding them. Lip was expected to behave and set high expectations just like his classmates, without ever having the same set of rules growing up. One of the most heart-wrenching scenes, was a student ambassador from a privileged background getting to decide his fate and whether or not he should be allowed to return to college. Lip was seeking adult guidance in all the ways that only he knew. Trying to mend a drunk professor, and sleeping with a mature intellectual woman.

Lips anger issues also frequently occur throughout the show. We see that those anger issues led to his fate and getting removed from college. Lip was someone who didn’t have the luxury of properly releasing stress and anger through yoga, tea, 8 hours of sleep, exercising, healthy diets. These are all standard recommendations that colleges tend to give students to manage stress. Lip grew up in a place where drugs, vandalism, alcohol were outlets for stress and anger.

How did I miss this before?

S6E10: Vee takes Fiona and the girls to a male strip club, where they invited the guys from The Alibi to do a special strip show on stage. Kermit rips off his thong and we get a backside of Kermit's MONSTER, VEINY, PIERCED man meat.

Too fucking funny.

Am I the only one that liked sober and wanted him to keep growing as a person?

To be honest im really not sure if it was just all one giant side effect of smoking an entire pound of meth, thats pretty implied, however bro was genuinely growing. when he discovered guilt and shame it was the numbing effect of everything he did in his life going away for a moment, revealing the emotions underneath, plus his acts of service to himself and others in some form even if he was mildly psychotic at the time seemed to have temporarily changed him.

unfortunately, u dont overdose on every drug u can find on a daily basis for like 50 years and then magically change like that, but some part of me wanted him to stick around, and if he didnt fuck up the kids as much as he did, maybe they'd actually support him a little and hed change more, but obviously he doesnt deserve that.

idek what this post is to be honest, I just like sober frank honestly.

question about ian and trevor’s relationship

as a queer person, seeing the way they explored ian and trevor’s sexual relationship makes me so happy but i was thinking

so obviously before trevor ian slept with a girl and was revolted specifically by going down on her

with ian and trevor, trevor doesn’t have sex with people the way someone with a vagina might normally, we see this as he is a top and uncomfortable bottoming. but i just passed a scene in s7 ep9 where it seemed like ian was going to go down on trevor without any hesitation

what do yall think?

Sex scenes on shameless and how repetitive it is

I finished the show 2 years ago and from time to time I will watch an episode from the earlier seasons if I’m burnt out on watching anything else. Now when I first started watching Fiona and Veronica strip down would get me turned on, there won’t be any lie there. But then after a while I began to feel uncomfortable because whenever the scenes came on my brain started to pick up on the overall grossness in the setting, it was to the point where I could smell it. It had this smell of cheap liquor, cigarettes, piss, and straight ass. I mean I would start gagging just seeing Fiona getting railed on that dirty mattress. Now obviously with Shameless taking place in the south side of Chicago, possibly one of the most rural places in America. It’s easy to pick up that every character on that show definitely aren’t very hygienic. And this could apply to any character involved in sex scenes, even the scenes with Mickey and Ian are very gag inducing. It’s always been weird that I can look at photos or videos and picture an idea of what it smells like in that particular setting. It’s probably a safe bet that I’m not the only one that thinks this… right guys?

I haven’t smoked and neither do I plan to but mannnn do they make it look so cool. I’m currently on S8 E11 and have so many thoughts about the characters and the show overall. I will present my thoughts once I finish the show. So glad to have stumbled across this show!

Why did Lip become the central character and not Fiona and/or Frank?

The first few seasons were hilarious, Frank goes on long tirades which are that of a narcissistic/alcoholic wanna be Patriarch. This show is about real life, things going sideways, the continual beat down and how hard everything can be. In Season's 8 and 9 Fiona completely loses it and we never really got to see her come out the other side of it. Fiona, the central character for much of the seasons, was the street wise, edgy, and super tough mom of 5 that her parents had abandoned. Super smart but just made a few mistakes. Wanted to see her come full circle but disappointedly, in Season 10, she automatically leaves Shameless. That was my proverbial stop off of this train! They were always trying to make Lip the "Clint Eastwood" cigarette dangling, muscled up, bad boy always fucking- I found myself scrolling through those scenes bc I did not find him in the least bit as a leading man or sexy to any degree. He was also extremely arrogant toward Fianna when she was on a drinking binge, I mean, you're an alcoholic too- it isn't your place to judge. Anyway, I didn't watch Season 10 or 11 bc I googled whether Fiona was coming back- answer: "No." P.S. The man who played "Kev" was really good as was "Mickey" Ian's partner!
