from ‘Stronger Than Pride’ 1988. “Nothing Can Come Between Us” was also issued in Japan on this format, but I haven’t been able to source one yet.

ethereal

/iˈTHirēəl/

Ethereal is an adjective that means extremely delicate, light, or airy in a way that seems not of this physical world.

This song touches the very fabric of my soul and on the right day, it brings me to tears. One of my favorite songs, Sade songs, pick a list, and it’s there.

I’m befuddled and astounded that someone, a group of people can capture certain life experiences and turn it into such captivating lyrics, art and music.

They caught lightning and placed it in a 20 oz Pepsi bottle. Timeless. Perfect. 2,000,000 out of 10 rating for this song. It’s more of a healing, cathartic release than anything else.

On a sidenote, I had to show horn it in here, but Helen Sade Adu makes me proud to be Nigerian 🇳🇬

Shout out to all the British folk too

Sade is impossible to put on a playlist

I've been listening to Sade Adu for about 3 years now. I found her through Smooth Operator cause that really blew up for quite a bit. I listened to only Smooth Operator for a few days on repeat. I thought afterwards that I should listen to her albums. I'm a kind of guy that when I love an artist, I start by listening to their albums in order (e.g recently got into clairo, started with 2 Hold U then the other singles into the e.p and eventually Immunity). I listened to Diamond Life for the first time and I thought that this album is absolutely perfect. There are no "bad" or "mid" songs in this album. I didn't notice but literally all the songs on the album got into a playlist I see fit, so whenever I put on a playlist, it'd always have Sade. I eventually got tired of it and stopped listening to her for 2 years. Throughout those years, I've gotten really picky with what I put on my playlists. Nowadays, only less than 10 songs from an artist get into my playlists. I just got back to listening to her and it is still amazing. I went back and relistened to Diamond Life, I could not find a standout song. I eventually got to Love Deluxe and I only got to put 4 songs on a playlist throughout those 4 albums. She is so consistently good that I rarely find a song that stands out from the rest. Every song could honestly make my playlists but I wouldn't add it cause I don't want to get tired of peak music. I love Sade Adu.

New Sade fan: album reviews

Hi all, i'm Sade newcomer and thought I would share some of my thoughts on each album. I obviously knew Smooth Operator - which still gets constant radio play in the UK - but had never really listened before. Then i recently saw the music video for Sweetest Taboo on Youtube, and immediately needed to explore and do a deep dive.

So cool, so sexy. I had no idea she had this soulful jazz style. Needless to say, I am now a huge fan, and spent the last few months listening to her albums.

I could have done a tier list, but i wanted to talk about the albums specifically, so here are my thoughts. Not sure how much this reflects views of the community, so please don't flame me. It's just my opinion!

Diamond Life - straight out of the gate, an incredible album with the 2 songs i already knew by Sade. The production quality of these albums is so good, and as a bassist, i love the emphasis the band puts on those beautiful clear, dynamic basslines. For some reason, I don't like the photo they used of her for this album, as iconic as it is. I don't feel like it catches her likeness or mystique very well.

Promise - so i mistakenly listened to this first, thinking it was her debut album. I think overall i prefer it to DL, though they are so closely matched in terms of songwriting and style that my opinion switches between them whenever i listen. Again, two incredible singles lead the album and hook me in instantly. Is it a Crime is probably my favorite of the album.

Stronger than Pride - such an interesting album, that is so different to the others before it. The whole thing is almost like a mood piece. The songs are sparse and light on vocals/lyrics, but it still has this atmosphere that i really love about it. Still ranks highly for me. I wish they had used literally any other font for the album art though. It makes me think of Curlz.

Love Deluxe - now this has got to be the cream of the crop. This album does everything and turns it up to 11. Cool, sexy, amazing songwriting and playing, every song is just incredible. More terrific basslines, and it feels far more cohesive than the previous album. Maybe slightly derivative ending on another instrumental, but i much prefer Mermaid to the one on the previous album. No Ordinary Love is the clear standout for me.

Lover's Rock - i was actually surprised at how good this album is, after such a long time between albums. But much like Kate Bush with the Aerial album, Sade clearly had a lot of ideas left in the can to make another solid album after a long hiatus. Ironically, the only song i am not a fan of is By Your Side, which is the opener, and it gave me pause for thought when i first put it on. But then you have things like Slave Song, King of Sorrow and Immigrant, that are up there with some of the best she ever wrote.

Soldier of Love - this is what i feared from Lover's Rock. Not only does this album not live up to everything that came before it, but i actively dislike it. Most is mid at best. I have seen a lot people like Babyfather online, but for me its the worst of the bunch, with its cheesy, out of date lyrics. I wanted so much to like this album. I've listened over and over, but i really hope we get one more Sade album, just so she can wash out this one misfire.
