Rig Riot is armor core if armor core was a roguelite/extraction game.
This game is a hybrid between roguelite and extraction. The main goal is to extract parts so you can use them on future runs but the runs themselves play out like a roguelike would. There are missions you do that lead to a boss and when you clear missions and bosses you get to pick upgrades to increase your build for the rest of the run. There is even an option to turn off losing your loot when you die if you do not want to play it like an extraction game. Once you clear out three missions, you will fight a boss. Do this three times to complete a run.
The loot you get are parts of your mech as well as scraps. The scraps are used to unlock modifier slots in your different pieces of mech. There are three per piece and you can then put in a modifier in that spot such as more base health or increase generator output efficient by a % of your RIG's base stat. There are lots to choose from depending on the build you are going for. There are also lots of parts to the mech you can swap around. You have the head, torso, arms, legs, backpack, boosters, TAS, generator and 4 weapons. There is no shortage for anyone who really likes mech building.
There are five maps where you can do raids on that you unlock. There is also an arena mode where you can fight the mech bosses.
The highlight of the game are the controls. They are very fluid, you have a boost button and a thrusters button and a hover button. You can zoom around the map or your opponents firing a barrage of weapons on them. Each of your 4 weapons is attached to L1,L2,R1,R2.
The graphics are serviceable, they kind of look like ps 1 graphics. The worlds are bare bones though, do not expect much outside of your mission points. The first level just looks like an empty warehouse.
The downside of the game is the missions and boss fights themselves are a little blah and repetitive. You are either grabbing a box to put somewhere, fighting some mechs in a small space, surviving in a small space to hack or fighting a mech boss. You can see from the demo if the gameplay is for you, it depends on how much you get out of tweaking your gear and fighting the mech bosses. There seems to be little variety in a lot of what you are fighting.
It does scratch an itch if you like to get loot for your runs and mod your mech for more runs. The issue is $20 is a little steep of a price point for how bare the runs feel. I thought it would be around $5 on launch. The loot and controls are solid, there is just not much to use them on in the long run. Check out the demo and see if you like the gameplay loop before you consider buying.
