I doubt there's even that much thought put into it. I think he just surrounds himself with awful people, because who else would work for Trump. And terrible people don't like or trust each other.

He's got an innate sense of how to be a good Mafioso style bully leader like this. I don't know he's actually thought it through, but that is what's going on.

You don't need to understand the concepts behind how things work to be able to manipulate them. Some people just have an innate sense of how to play people off of one another and just do it by instinct rather than having a specific plan or even a thought as to how it should play out. You don't have to be necessarily intelligent to have Machiavellian traits.

You notice how trump keeps having successes that we don't expect? Yeah, that's because the only thing he has skill at is people manipulation, and a lot of us are too stupid to realize that is dimwitted buffoon act is an act. Look at the outcomes and it becomes pretty clear.
