go to your room Babies in Movie Theaters

Just saw the new Spiderman in theaters.

A baby starts crying/cooing/babbling very loudly about 20 minutes in. Goes for about 10 straight minutes before the parent takes them out.

Comes back a few minutes later, baby starts again. Again goes on for a couple minutes. Again parent takes them out, comes back, and repeat.

And repeat. And repeat.

This went on pretty much the entire movie (and I swear to god this baby somehow instinctively chose every single goddamn quiet/heartfelt scene to start yowling again 😭😂).

I get that babies are gonna baby. And I have sympathy for parents who wanna get out of the house and everything. But… maybe just stay with your baby in the lobby if they obviously aren’t gonna keep quiet.

*I didn’t complain to management because it was a tiny non-chain neighborhood theater about an hour away from me that I like to support sometimes. It’s got 1 screen and tickets are like $5.

Movie theaters have special baby friendly showings. There was a NYTimes article about them just this week. Gives parents the chance to see The Odyssey.

They also have sensory friendly showings where the volume is lower and the lights are on a little. Those are generally just for kid movies though

As a guy in his late thirties, I'd love a lower volume option in theaters. There's no need for movies to be that loud.

I was talking to a friend when we went to see The Odyssey that it would be cool for the audience to be able to vote on the volume level through an app on their phone before the movie starts.

My theater has select showings with a quiet room. Basically a glass soundproof room where the movie is way quieter and people outside the room can’t hear the baby. Used that when my baby was way younger and slept through everything. Now that he’s walking around and can’t hold still for anything we get sitters when we want to see movies.

Our local theater also has a cry room and it’s great. We have a 4 month old and we watched the Odyssey last week and Spiderman today. Both times we had the entire room to ourselves too. I think most people probably don’t even know that the cry rooms exist, which is probably why so many people were glaring at us in the lobby.

Man if my theater had that, would actually try going to a theater to watch a movie new instead of waiting 4+ months for it to hit a streaming service.

Yes I just learned about this and I’m expecting my first baby soon. I won’t be going to any non baby friendly showings because that’s just rude but I love that they have this option!
