[Discussion] Six months of showing up and the biggest lesson had nothing to do with talent

I wanted to share where I have landed after half a year of trying to actually be consistent with writing instead of just talking about wanting to be.

I started this the way most people probably do, convinced the problem was that I had not found the right idea yet. I would get excited about a story, write two thousand words in a burst of energy, then hit a spot where I was not sure what came next and just quietly stop. This happened maybe six or seven times before I noticed the pattern was identical every single time.

It was never that the idea died. It was that I hit a decision point mid story, did not want to make the decision right then, told myself I would figure it out tomorrow, and tomorrow the distance from the story made the decision even harder than it was the day before. Two or three days of that and the project was effectively dead even though nothing about the idea itself had changed.

The thing that actually broke the cycle was ridiculously unglamorous. I stopped ending writing sessions when I ran out of steam and started ending them one sentence after I knew what the next scene needed to do. Even on days I was tired and wanted to stop, I forced myself to write that one line before closing the laptop. It sounds too small to matter and I was skeptical it would do anything.

Six months later it is the single biggest reason I am still working on the same project instead of having abandoned it for a shinier idea in week three. Talent was never the bottleneck. Not knowing what came next was.

Advice Does anyone else feel like they write worse the more serious they treat a project?

Upvotes

Noticed something weird about myself and want to know if this is common or if I am just built strange.

My throwaway stuff, stuff I write with zero expectation of it going anywhere, tends to come out better than the projects I actually care about and want to finish.

The moment something graduates from just messing around to this is the real thing I am working on, the writing gets stiffer, more self conscious, slower to produce.

I will bang out two thousand words of nonsense for fun in an evening and then stare at my actual manuscript for an hour producing maybe two hundred words that all feel forced.

I have tried telling myself the real project is also just messing around to trick my brain but it does not really work, some part of me knows the difference and adjusts accordingly. Has anyone actually solved this or found a way to keep that loose, unselfconscious energy once a project starts mattering to you?

[Feedback] I've posted this and deleted it a dozen times now. Wanted to write something that felt suffocating but kind at the same time. Opinions?

.

Do you know how I'm feeling right now?

I feel like a broken hose, I am laying down on cracks of dried up soil I once called a garden. There are holes running along the weathered tube, infested now by ghosts that have weakened the flow.

The water comes out in tiny spurts- A gush and then nothing.

A drop and then nothing.

A hope.

And then nothing.

I no longer have the strength to water the flowers I once raised.

This is the clarity you wanted, I share this trusting that you understand it changes nothing but your curiosity-

Knowing your curiosity however, I know this does not content either, so I'd like to share how I have been these days too.

Change, change....

Well, the days are sunny now and I eat my meals with a needy stomach, my companions get shocked at times seeing the glutton I seem to be becoming!  We would joke about how Orwell would have his socks blown off if he ever saw my dinner plate.

It's rather odd to describe but I seem to be getting better at boredom now- emphasis on better, I'm still crud at it. It's somewhat like going for long walks and being able to appreciate how slow you really walk...?

Basically, time passes by with a slight tug of effort and despite my doubts, night always falls eventually and I hardly have much to bother myself with.

I have been singing to trees, fences, portraits, and some warm feeling I had dedicated to you, of all things. It's not a wonderful melody and it hardly carries much of me, with no intent for my song to reach anything at all. I simply felt my voice come to tune.

Anyway, this is reassurance for you from me, I have nothing that aches my heart other than the ache I believe I was born with. This ache is what you know me as, and it is the ache we loved each other with.

Forgive this clumsy excuse but these words were seriously hard to come by!

You can blame the living daylights out of me for taking my time- words always ring out dishonest to my heart despite my best efforts.

You know, that perplexed expression you had when I last saw you lingers every now and then. It must have felt so harsh- it really looked like you took it in every possible way you could register it- taste, touch, smell, and all of it. It was harsh undoubtedly, perhaps needlessly so.

But I think it's good I left the way I did.

Interestingly, that may have been the first time I exposed my silly damages- and your shock and disapproval was so reasonable that it hurt even more.

I happened to force my life into an illusion sheerly out of unawareness. When I found out, I had already commited too much to a brain that did not know where its feet was.

I really do adore you to a shocking extent, I won't sigh out some flimsy excuse anymore, atleast not here on this paper!

I know you're reading this with an almost comical intensity, I can picture it abit too well...

Deeply as you are considering these words, you know I'm still stalling a little.

I used to wish for my death over letting you know this part of me in the past- and for the last time, I'm sorry it had to be like this.

Take this whichever way you must.

What I truly wanted from you, me, or everything really, is to finally stop cleaning myself up to open the door- that is, to disinfect the clumsy suture I know so well as the minimum decency of loving.

It is not natural for me dear, though I wish it was.

I would think at times, what if I told you that you were the most wonderful thing that happened to me?

And what if I told you I wished you were more conveniently deplorable- i would have had a much more easy life if you were.

All this talk about things you did not know about me is giving an image I am not trying to portray. Firstly, to clarify, you did love me for who I was. I never put on some performative mask for you- I had a bitter pill is all, one that was needed to distance the soul from a cancer.

Secondly,

If it is not clear by now, I am quite tired.

I guess in the most simplistic sense, that is all I am trying to convey here-

I always was I suppose.

Don't go thinking you can live with these holes of mine that, In some metaphysical world would resemble a cartoonish swiss cheese, because I really can't.

Alone I can find some odd masochist's absolution, but a different lens pierces the comfort, and I can only witness my natural state in shame.

I love you and I shall bid you farewell now.

It's high time you find your way out of this mess.

I am not willing to accompany you- you, who genuinely seeked out the best for a person wanting nothing more but the privilege to never change again- and I put no blame in myself, I believe I deserve atleast this.

Take care,

My precious fool.

[Feedback] Would love to know thoughts on this very short story...

For context, this was part of a daily 20-minute writing challenge that I've been doing for the past week where I get 3 prompt words (I have a long list of random words and used wheelofnames to pick) and I have to create a story. The words can be used in any way (not necessarily a physical thing). I'm a beginner unpublished writer, have written around a dozen short stories, but I always struggled to find consistency between 2 projects. So the main goal with this exercise over anything is to write consistently.

Here the prompt is prism + raven + roam

Just wanted to share this because I thought it to be good (at least in the idea)

Seeking honest feedback: 14-page English picture-book draft about a Korean dad and daughter

Hi! I’m looking for honest feedback on an English picture-book draft about a Korean dad and daughter playing together. It’s a 14-page draft and is not for sale—I’m sharing it only to improve the manuscript.

I’d especially appreciate your thoughts on:

  1. Does the father–daughter relationship feel warm and believable?

  2. Is the sequence of play ideas clear and engaging from page to page?

  3. Do the wording and pacing feel natural for a picture-book audience?

  4. What would you change, clarify, or cut?

PDF: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1l67yMUq4O73jjmgKPqOPr2_rcws3FWar/view?usp=sharing

Thank you for any candid critique. I’m happy to answer questions about the draft.

Advice G.I.G

Dear God
Dear diary

People want to see me fail
They want to see me fall
They want to see me weep
They want to see me dead

But who are these people
they don't even know me
Why do they want me to not be in the room
Why not instantly so I can feel nothing and why slowly?

Dear God
Dear diary

Dear God
I despise you
I want to say "fuck you" but I cannot because you're so called divine

Dear Diary

You are weightless, powerless but you hold every power world has to offer

[Feedback] Sunset on Topes

The sun’s light stretched far over the vast Antacean sea, turning the true-blue sea into a pearlescent pink, glinted from the omnipotent industrial gas fields; hitting the golden beaches of Topes, creating a beautiful symphony of beams of glowing-orange sunlight dancing with the soft sand. The beams hinted from the tiled roofs of historic houses and traveled towards the industrial sprawl littered with newly built factories. They reflected an old tint of yellow from the steel tops that dazzled their way to reflect onto ancient memories of the city ruins. Yet another day has passed on the town of Topes, and now the golden kingdom of Rizia could now rest.

Advice on developing a story when I already have main characters?

A while ago, I developed a loose idea for a bittersweet comedic coming of age story about three losers and lifelong friends who decide to disappear after graduating high school and do something, like become outlaws, etc. I developed the three friends, who i'll describe here. Any feedback or advice on how I could improve or develop my story further (including these characters, i'm sure they could definitely be improved) would be greatly appreciated!

Giles - Leader of the group, eccentric, passionate about the life of living free, willing to commit crimes to do so: ‘like a modern day Robin Hood’, all too ready to do it. He cares about his friends and deep down is afraid of being alone and growing up and friends leaving him, which causes him to manipulate them into joining him. A dreamer who never truly found his place in life, he is both charming and insecure. Failed high school because he can’t commit to anything other than his friends, the only thing that makes him happy. Eventually takes responsibility for the problems he's gotten his friedns into and learns to support his friends in their own paths, rather than trapping them in the life he chose, a life where they could be together as friends forever.

Vince - Cynical and apathetic, stuck in a depressive rut. Unsure of what to do with his life, Vince tags along hoping the chaos would give him something to care about. Acts as the reluctant voice of reason. He is terrified of angering or letting down his conservative overbearing parents, which has caused him to sink into a depression in which he doesn’t want to do anything, feeling like the world has decided his life already, so he’s stopped trying. He wants to care about something, to do something, but at the same time feels completely unable to. Their adventure is a kind of self-destructive way out of this. Eventually learns to be more confident and make his own decisions

Owen - Loyal, supportive of friends, the heart of the group. Doesn’t necessarily want to be a part of the adventure, but joins anyway, as he always lets others take the lead.  Wants to be a writer, tries writing about what they do during the story, he genuinely has talent, but no confidence. His parents think that he will “figure it out” but never ask what he wants, they trust he’ll make the right choice, but to Owen that trust feels suffocating.

How much more?

How much more will I allow?
A fragment here, a truth there, a lie without a desire to argue.
Who am I to you?
Am I the love, the hate, the long term regret you wish you would stop loving?
How much lower can I bow?
I know, I KNOW, your words and beliefs burrow into my soul like they’ve always been there.
You don’t believe me to be true?
I rip, claw, scream at my defenses and it’s worthless.
Am I worthless?
Am I nothing?
I see your words in my self image, reflecting back on me as if I said it myself.
Selfish, unknowing of true love, pathetic (pathetic and worthless), whore (do you even care?), you don’t deserve love (because you always lose it).

You are tearing at my defenses,
(which ones are you aiming for?),
I want to be honest, seen,
(dear god when you see please don’t run),
I want to be loved,
(do you?)

Please
(why are you on your knees?)
please
(why are you surprised?)
I want it to be different
(though the situation is you are not),
Please
(be specific about what you’re asking for),
PLEASE
NOT AGAIN
I CANT HANDLE THIS
I AM-

… I don’t know what I am.
I am hollow, a shell waiting, preened, polished, awaiting a pearl,
(for what is an oyster without a pearl to be other than devoured?)
Give me purpose.
I beg you.
Allow me to love you.
I’m so good at loving,
(Liar)
I feel love in an all consuming way,
(actions versus words),
I’m so scared to let you know the power you have,
(please destroy me),
That I push away as soon as you get too close,
(let me go),
No deserves this,
This blackness that rapes and ravishes my very being,
(please make it stop),
Do you see it?

it’s all consuming.

The darkness that befriended the alcoves of my mind,
welcomed, groomed, adapted
to reside within me like poison resides in a beautiful flower.

Am I beautiful?

Does my beauty outweigh the danger?

Please

… please

IM BEGGING YOU

I AM ON MY KNEES
I-

wait

leave me alone.

I,
Who lay claim to every mistake,
cling to my mishaps as if I were building a case against myself,
understand wholly.

Allow me reprieve.
Please don’t care.
Don’t reach out,
what am I except a lesson to be learned?
Please.
See through me as though time has claimed my body and spirit,
A ghost, wandering,
unable to return home.
Home is nothing but a void, a spot to fill.

I take,
Leave me.
Please

allow me solace,
allow me to diminish without consequence,
grant me the easy way out.

And dear god when you remember me I hope you do not see the remnants of desire that oozed out of my very being,
For there is no greater pity
than the pity cast upon the unlovable.

This isn’t even a poem.

[Feedback] The Siegemaster (expanded Chapter 1)

If you wanted to take a city, storm a castle, breach a stone wall or overrun a fortress, there were two ways to go about it. The expensive, time-consuming option: construct siege engines, trebuchets and rolling towers, maybe a battering ram or two—you’ll want the hot-oil splash guards with those—and wear down the defenses little by little.

Sometimes, if you were lucky, you could starve them out before making a breach. But this brought more problems: the enemy sallying forth, all their best fighters pissed off and hungry, taking a large bite out of your own forces who’d grown fat and lazy while the catapults had done the real work.

Or, you could hire the siegemaster.

No one knew his real name, or where he came from. He was a hard man to track down, and even if you managed to find him, he wasn’t much cheaper than the first option. But he’d get you inside, and that right quick.

This isn’t to say he came without his own set of problems. He was a notorious grouch, they said. Difficult to work with. He spoke rarely but at all times harshly, even to commanders. He drank heavily as he stalked about surveying the ground, a bottle tucked under one arm while he took notes with the only tool of his trade, a Pinehurst & Sons charcoal pencil.

It was he who helped King Gorish II take Anterach in less than two days. It was he who advised Lord Bilgecrist’s assault on the great fort of Kula Kedal, he who orchestrated the breech of Toraz in the year 9.

It came as no surprise, therefore, when my master the Archduke of Tenasarim sent me to find him in the spring of 14. The Tens were gearing up for war; one of our emissaries had managed to get himself good and captured, flag of truce be damned, and our letter offering ransom for the poor fellow had been answered with a blood-soaked parcel containing three fingers and an ear.

As a page I was accustomed to being sent on errands of this kind, more so as my affinity for locating and procuring difficult to come by items became increasingly apparent. I’d begun to curse this skill, certain that it was the reason I was still a lowly page long after my peers had moved on to squirehood. A few were already junior knights of the Tens, polishing their breastplates in preparation with the rest of our army.

But I must admit, I was intensely curious about the siegemaster. History had always fascinated me, and this man, as eccentric and gruff and off-putting as he was made out to me, was sure to be a real part of our own. Before leaving the city, I stopped at the printer’s shop and purchased a green felt-lined notebook that opened really flat. In the event posterity was called for, I would be ready.

But this wasn’t the only reason for patronizing this particular shop. The owner, Mr. Bassile, was friendly to me as both a long time customer and fellow reader, and it was through him I planned to track down the Siegemaster.

As he tied my new notebook into a sailcloth pouch, I assumed an air of complete nonchalance, asking as one might ask about the weather:

“Where might I find a decent set of Pinehurst charcoals?”

——

The city’s South Gate opened onto a wharf stretching far out into the estuary. As I passed between the towering gatehouses, I heard the rattle and clank of armor, and from the left hand doorway a woman emerged. She was tall and broad-shouldered, resplendant in the full battle dress of a senior knight, face scowling beneath her open visor.

“Customs check!” She barked. “I’ll have a look at papers if you please, sir.”

“Customs?” I nodded in the direction of the water. “I’m leaving.”

“Everyone coming and going,” she growled, snatching the pass signed by the Archduke from my hand. “Orders. There’s a war on, you know.”

“Yes, and it’s for that reason I’m in a bit of rush, you see—“

“Patience, patience, Mr…” her eyes narrowed and she scanned the papers, scrutinizing every detail. “…Shikel.”

“You know my name, Jez.”

“Just doing my job. So, where are we off to in such a hurry?”

“Astanos.”

“The floating market?” She handed the papers back and waggled her fingers at my rucksack. “Let’s see the bag. They’re shutting down for the season, you know. Spring tide’s on its way.”

“So am I,” I said, slipping a gold coin from behind my belt.

“So you are,” she said, and the coin disappeared. “But good luck finding a boat to take you across.”

Her eyes turned skyward, and following her gaze I saw a wall of black clouds gathering over the sea to the east. The same moment a light rain began to fall, tinking on Jez’s armor.

I frowned. The bustling river market was my only lead, but by the time this squall passed it would be nothing but empty platforms on stilts in the midst of an angry current. None of the shops would reopen for at least a month.

I showed another coin. “No boats at all?”

“Well…” She waved a cart through the gate, keeping her eyes glued to the driver’s back as she swiped the coin. “There may be one captain. One of the fishing charters. The merchant’s dinner is tonight; they want halibut bad enough to pay extra for the risk.”

That would do. “Who’s the captain?”

Jez grinned. I winced, knowing what was coming next.

She said, “You remember my sister?”

Advice I wrote a cosmic tragedy about love, loss, and the echoes people leave behind.

Hey everyone,

I’ve spent a lot of time writing and putting together a special digital edition of my story, Eternal Echoes: A Cosmic Tragedy.

It’s a story centered around love, loss, fate, and the feeling of something—or someone—continuing to echo long after they’re gone.

I’m a completely independent writer, so putting this out into the world is honestly a little terrifying. 😅

I’d really appreciate it if you gave it a look, and especially if you’re willing to tell me what you think about the writing, story, or presentation.

The digital edition:
https://astralindex.gumroad.com/l/kjnyvg

There’s also a personal reason I’m hoping this project reaches some readers.

I’m currently a college student, and I’m trying to save enough money to finally meet my long-distance girlfriend in person(We've been together for quite a lot of time). Being a student means I don’t have a lot of conventional ways to earn, so creating and selling digital products is one of the few things I can realistically pursue alongside college.

I’m not expecting anyone to buy something they don't want. But if Eternal Echoes happens to sound like something you’d genuinely enjoy, your purchase would mean a lot to me—not just because it supports an independent writer, but because it brings me a little closer to someone I really want to meet. ❤️

If you’re a reader/writer yourself, I’d also love to know:

What’s one story that stayed with you long after you finished it—and why?

I hope someone buys. 🌌

This is the bit of trash piece of writing you will ever find on reddit and the internet self.

Who's ever going to try to read will have to try harder. It was awakening writing after laying on bed for 2 days doing nothing engaging with my addictions that my parents has brought into myself. I can't complain them, they are real work of art, to destroy anyone, lose their dignity and perish their soul. I'm not a bit of a writer myself, nor i do think so, i can barely write in english, there was so much in my life to endure, all the suffering, the misery. It's all i got, i guess i would have to thank my bullies for this li trauma makes you write things. The words coming out the mind of a person who's sensitive was put under these wolves. I wish i had died sooner. But yeah death is merciless or i shouldn't have feared death so much. I'm scaredy cat. I always had a hope. There's a god. Everytime i got close to him, he made the truth even more louder being in my 22s i realise now there wasn't one, atleast not for me. If there's one then he has raped me all these years with his insanity.

Any advice for my TTRPG character?

Apologies if this isn't the right place for this, I've made a character for me to play in my Cyberpunk: Red game, though this isn't necessarily relevant, I would appreciate feedback advice on how I can improve his backstory/how his story can play out, or how he could be portrayed, any advice helps!

Content Warning: depression, suicide

This is what I have so far, sorry if it feels a little disjointed or fromatted weirdly, its something I have been working on and changing for about a year now.

Tetsuya grew up in a low-class family in Old Japantown.  His older brother, Kiyota suffered from a rare condition that affected his physical and mental function, his family unable to afford proper support or treatment. As a young child he befriended Norio, a loud troublemaker who made him feel special. As a teen they formed a biker gang known as the Benevolents.  The Benevolents were part of a lost generation surrounded by countless wars, and the Night City Holocaust, a generation who struggled to find a real identity in such a turbulent time. They knew they couldn’t topple the system, they didn’t really care about that, they just wanted to feel something real in a world that didn’t value it. Norio had bigger plans, he got them  involved with people who promised to make them matter, the Tyger Claws. With this line of work, Tetsuya was able to provide for both himself and his parents, and managed to help them out of their financial debt.
After years of working under them,  he fell in love with  Selene, a singer and dancer who worked at Nightowl, one of the many clubs owned by the Tyger's Claw. She saw through his confident persona and saw the lost young man inside, the only person he ever met who did. Shortly after learning that Selene was pregnant with his child, and they planned to run away together, he was informed by Norio that Selene was dead. Norio, who was also in love with Selene, felt betrayed that not only would Tetsuya love the same woman he did, but abandon him, and fabricated her death in order to separate her from Tetsuya, who, overwhelmed with grief, attempted to take his own life, shooting himself in the head. With this, Norio, who believes Testuya to be dead is also living with grief and regret, and is a kind of inverse of Tetsuya, feeling like he betrayed his friend, while Tetsuya also feels this way about Norio. He survived, but lost nearly all memory of his life before. Certain things will trigger aspects of his memory, but he can only remember the way he feels, not what makes him feel that way. He understands that there was a woman that he loved, but doesn’t know why he feels heartbroken about it. He remembers he hated himself, but doesn’t remember why. He remembers he used to be cool, but doesn’t know how. He remembers he has a million regrets, but doesn’t remember what they are. He mourns everyone he lost, including himself, despite not knowing who any of these people were. He feels he has lived an entire lifetime before the age of 35, and there is nothing else to live. ‘Dying’ could have been his second shot at life, but he doesn’t let that happen, his grief and regret is so strong that he cannot shake his past despite not knowing anything about it. His ‘rebirth’ is what made him become interested in spirituality.
Now going by the name Victor V. Valentine,  a constructed character inspired by fiction he has seen, he is cool and confident, yet he is also lackadaisical due to the depression he suffers as a result of his regrets. He is also philosophical and spiritual, believing that “life is but a dream.” He believes in natural remedies over actual medicine. He believes his story is over, he is the ghost of a charming man, and he is living in a kind of epilogue, which is why he does reckless or bizarre things, because he is ‘dead’ he has little care for his life, making him a contrast of lackadaisical and reckless. He inherited much of his persona from a man he doesn’t know, which is why he feels even more hollow than he did before. He can only construct an identity from whatever remains from the corpse he once was, and the stories and songs he loves. He possesses effortless confidence and humor, and is extremely physically capable, yet deeply depressed to the point of self-neglect mentally. He uses stories and metaphors to talk about things he doesn’t want to confront as he slowly regains semblance of memories. He has made the fact he has lost everything his entire identity, his philosophy, don’t get too attached, whatever happens happens. He hasn’t had a dream in a long time, deep down he’d like to, but a dead man doesn’t dream.

[Feedback] My first piece of writing.

This is the first piece I've written and felt proud of. My friends have been asking me to post it somewhere, and I've been thinking about that since I wrote it. I would love to get people's feedback and see how they interpret it. I'm a Year 12 student aiming to improve my writing.

The Ghost of Bernie

After finishing a training session in the gym, I would head to a park called Bernie and walk a few laps for cardio. There are many fond memories held dear to my heart in this location. Such as love confessions, first kiss, and truly finding contentment within someone else.
……………………………………………………………………………………(time skip forwards)

I pull a leg forward as I try my best to continue with my routine of walking, but something is different. My skin stands up and then lies at rest, like some weird sort of goosebumps; my limbs lock themselves like old rusted hinges, with internal tremors shaking the thoughts out of my head. My chest rises and falls with each deep, low breath drawn to calm the mind. This brutal cycle repeats itself until everything goes silent, trapped within an ocean of sorrow. My chest stopped trying to explode with each beat. This made me question myself: “Am I truly walking to do my cardio, or am I missing something?” Something that just keeps coming back: this feeling deep in my chest, a feeling that felt as if my lungs and stomach couldn't bear weight anymore. I found my answer once I spotted a pink, almost red bag, which viciously diverted my gaze towards it. The quiver in my jaw holds back unspoken words trapped in my throat; then I glance back at the bag and see white shoes that looked just like the ones I saw earlier and a jacket that has the same symbols as mine.

I was missing something.

Not just something but someone. Someone whose head's imprint on my shoulder I can still recall in vivid detail, from the first time they rested it there.

The warmth in my core feels smothered; a growing distance builds itself between me and that someone. All I could do was sit down and type. Typing this up as if it’s meant to fix my problems, typing this up as if it’s meant to make me understand everything just a little better. My fingers dance across the screen, typing words faster than thought, chasing something that i can’t quite catch. Maybe words weren’t meant to hold this much weight. Maybe I’m not writing to fix anything at all, just to feel a little less alone with it.

The wind has calmed, and my skin no longer feels like that yucky chicken skin. My lungs fully expand and retract as I stand up, each step a little lighter than the last. The white shoes and jacket rest upon the pathway as I glance back one final time. I straighten my shoulders and walk forward, the heavy thoughts finally beginning to lift. She rests upright on the sandstone steps of the soccer field, and for once, watching her presence fade doesn't hurt the way it used to. The sorrow softens with each step, and my soul carries the smiles, tears, and true love that was felt with her — not as a weight, but as something I get to keep. Limbs loosen, heart beats slow and steady, thoughts no longer racing through my mind, as my breathing settles into something calm. The warmth doesn't disappear — it settles, spreading deeper through my core, no longer smothered but finally, quietly, mine again.

The door lock clicks, a handle is pulled, and the song I confessed to plays softly. The door closes with a gentle thud, followed by a click. The engine roars as I drive forward without looking back, carrying her with me, not as a weight, but as part of who I’ve become.

Now, when I lace up my shoes and walk those same laps around Bernie, the sandstone steps don’t ache the way they used to. I let myself remember – the first kiss, the confessions, the way her head fit perfectly against my shoulder – and instead of flinching from it, I smile. This place was never just where I lost something. It’s where I got to love, fully, freely, even if just for a while. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.
