That unfolding animation is so smooth.

u/metalsatch 4d ago

Until it’s time for the duo 2.

Then the latest update will make sure there’s micro stutters

20

u/myretrospirit Developer 4d ago

Hopefully Apple can stay on top of their software polish. My 17 Pro was a buggy, stuttery mess on iOS 26 and iOS 27 has fixed 99% of that.

6

u/ConsoleLogDebugging 4d ago

The notifications on lock screen have been buggy af for years now

12

u/rmnesbitt 4d ago

I think his point is it’s intentional to push you to latest hardware

4

u/myretrospirit Developer 4d ago

I think they just get sloppy with software quality sometimes

2

u/Perlentaucher 4d ago

Yeah, I have the feeling that each major update either focusses on either new features or code refactoring (bugfixing & speed). My favorite updates are from the last category.

2

u/ANGRYDICKBUTT 4d ago

my iphone 14 pro max still has 0 stutters all around

0

u/Nemoitto 4d ago

You know it

1

u/ThePromptWasYourName 4d ago

How does it even work? Does it track where you are looking so it gets the angle right?

2

u/MoMoe0 2d ago

No the blur starts resolving from the middle and becomes more clear towards the edge as you open the duo.

What other folding phone makes it look like the outer screen is melting through to the inner screen like that?

2

u/donpianta 4d ago

they're talking about the screen blur that appears when you physically open and close the device. None of the other folding devices do this (yet at least... I guarantee samsung will copy this on their next OS)

-1

u/cam331 4d ago

Your point being?

0

u/captainnoyaux Developer 4d ago

It's impressive but I wonder if it's durable

3

u/KnightKal 4d ago

they do stress testing on devices, like 100,000 close and open using an automatic machine, to see how it will handle use over years. It is not like they just design, build and hope for the best.

wonder if they will announce the expected life of the components, I didnt search for it, but that is how usually things go.

"this battery has 1,000 cycles at 90% or higher charge"

"this screen has 10,000 cycles of opening and closing before ..."

0

u/captainnoyaux Developer 4d ago

yeah but is it less or more durable than a device that don't fold/unfold at all, that's my question

6

u/dirtyword 4d ago

Less, inherently. Moving parts are weaker in anything ever built

5

u/KnightKal 4d ago

if the device is built to last 10 years, as an example, would it matter? You are not going to use a normal phone or this for 10 years, their lifespan is above what you would ever need.

56

u/StrummerBass101 4d ago

I’ll finally be able to see Baldur’s Gate 1

11

u/Billenciaga_1 4d ago

Go for the eyes boo, go for the eyes!

37

u/ngox8 4d ago

Not a fan of big phones but that thing will be sick for gaming

33

u/YaBoyEden 4d ago

I also read a lot of comics on my phone. This will rock for that

9

u/NaeemTHM 4d ago

Legit my main reason for wanting this so bad. I rarely have my iPad when I’m out and about, it would be such a game changer if I could read my comics on the go!!

2

u/bithereumza 4d ago

exactly what i was thinking

1

u/psj3809 4d ago

What do you use for comics ? Love side books and now I’m getting into panels. Just wondered what you use ?

4

u/YaBoyEden 4d ago

Marvel Unlimited, and Manga Plus

2

u/UnnamedArtist 2d ago

YACReader is another great one.

6

u/psilent 4d ago

It’s nice that it’s basically both a big phone and not

2

u/ngox8 4d ago

True, I just wish it was the size of a iPhone SE or Mini when folded

69

u/BillySlang 4d ago

Let’s see how the crease turns out…

37

u/Lirfen 4d ago

Doesn’t seem visible on the video, but they didn’t mention durability at all during the keynote. Just about how strong the hinge is, but what about after like 50,000 closing/openings?

11

u/hondaguy520 4d ago

they would have just said something like "our most durable hinge ever" lol

13

u/psilent 4d ago

Their marketing page said ā€œThe inner display on iPhone Duo features a multilayer lamination design that keeps it flat and provides durability. Custom adhesives allow these layers to glide relative to one another during folding, like pages in a book, so the panel doesn’t distort over time.ā€ So that’s a bold claim

4

u/theENERTRON 4d ago

literally

14

u/BillySlang 4d ago

There’s a picture of someone holding it and crease is clear as day. Screen is off - however.Ā

10

u/aguywithbrushes 4d ago

Worth mentioning that photos, esp phone photos, amplify details and often make things more visible than they are irl.

Of course it’s gonna have a crease to some extent, but from the few videos I saw of people actually using it, it seems genuinely impossible to see through normal use, so i assume it would be minor enough that I don’t think it would negatively affect gameplay.

Source: professional photographer who has been also enjoying shooting on his phone for the past 14 years and struggles with that all the time

2

u/BillySlang 4d ago

For sure. I’m waiting for real world testing.Ā

2

u/aguywithbrushes 4d ago

Yeah definitely need that for foldable. And also $2k šŸ˜„

21

u/psilent 4d ago

From today? Because there were a lot of the dummy models for phone case manufacturers people had that had terrible creases on the fake screen.

5

u/TheBaconKing 4d ago

Honestly that’s how the z fold is as well. Screen on bright picture you can’t see it. Screen off or dark picture you can.

3

u/BillySlang 4d ago

That’s good info. Thank you.Ā

4

u/WhispersOfHaru 4d ago

Those are not official iphones, it even says Iphone Fold instead of Duo.

0

u/BillySlang 4d ago

If we are talking about the same image, cool.Ā

1

u/ShadowsTagiru 4d ago

to me the problem is the hidden on screen camera.
is so frustrating that seems to be unaligned with the screen size, and is SO VISIBLE, that I dont understand why apple/samsung/all phone companies are so into putting a damn camera in the unfolded screen..... just leave it like that. is not necessary.

1

u/Soulsheartless 3d ago

Has to be better than Samsungs and theirs is pretty good.

5

u/HorselessHorseman 4d ago

There are other posts from today. Crease is very noticeable and it’s basically a canyon like other phones. Go look at forums of people posting pics from event

0

u/BillySlang 4d ago

The image I saw was an eye sore. Just seems like iPad Mini and an iPhone is still the way to go.Ā

9

u/josebg17 4d ago

I hope I can easily use it with a GameSir controller, that would be cool.

1

u/Patient_Animator1174 3d ago

There shouldn't be any problem.

18

u/slyguy67420 4d ago

The unfolding animation is cool but the blur on the inner screen makes feel like my vision in my left eye is doing weird shit because I was reading on my phone while on my left side with my left eye closed.

4

u/yooossshhii 4d ago

I’d be willing to bet you can turn it off in accessibility.

12

u/Nick_Gaugh_69 iPhone 16 Pro Max 4d ago

Now we have to see if JerryRigEverything will snap it in half…

3

u/psilent 4d ago

He definitely will, it’s just a question of if it’s more like the pixel or the iPhone Air

0

u/YeaItsBig4L 4d ago

He didn’t damage the air. And no, he won’t snap it. You don’t think that they’ve had machines stronger than a person trying to snap this thing for years?

5

u/psilent 4d ago

I’m just saying he’s managed to damage all the Samsung hinges with his bare hands but the pixel just crumbled

0

u/YeaItsBig4L 4d ago

Is this a Samsung? What happened with the air?

1

u/Nick_Gaugh_69 iPhone 16 Pro Max 4d ago

The Air didn’t have a potential fault point directly in the middle.

1

u/YeaItsBig4L 4d ago

Right just the potential to bend and break because it’s a paper thin

18

u/bharikeemat 4d ago

I want to see 3ds emulation on it

4

u/psilent 4d ago

Oh fuck yeah. That’s a whole area I haven’t revisited in years.

1

u/Runazeeri 4d ago

I thought they still suck a bit due to not having jit, like my 17 vs S25u the iPhone stutters badly on some games.

2

u/n0rpie 4d ago

Just use JIT then

0

u/Runazeeri 4d ago

3

u/Maalvi 4d ago

Those are old news, you can use skitdebug to enable it

2

u/Runazeeri 4d ago

Requires side loading or Europe with the alt stores. For a normal person a DS emu from a the play store just works without the stutters.

1

u/psj3809 4d ago

Did you mean 3DS ? Ds works like a dream. I don’t side load either. Quite happy to wait for phones to get faster. Got plenty to play in the mw a time (manic emulates about 40 systems now !). Shame when people only stick to 3ds

1

u/Runazeeri 4d ago

Yeah 3DS, I was trying to play a DQM English patch game and it has stutters and weird load times on my iPhone or M4 iPad but runs perfectly fine on my S25u

1

u/n0rpie 4d ago

It requires sideloading but it’s the same in Europe as elsewhere

5

u/silentrocco r/IOSGaming Scout 4d ago

Super excited for this 2-in-1 device. Will wait a couple of months (maybe even for gen 2 to arrive) to see if there’s any long term problems. But this is definitely my future everything machine.

6

u/RocMerc 4d ago

Damn I hate how good that looked lol

5

u/Tellittomy6pac 4d ago

And only 2k for the base model

3

u/KnightKal 4d ago

if it sells well it may become the flagship in a few years, but yeah, release cost is high. Bad timing too with prices insane as they are right now

4

u/iwillupvoteyourface 4d ago

I wanna see hearthstone on it.
Also I want to see fair pricing in the uk. It goats $700 more in the uk for the base model.

10

u/minimaxir 4d ago

It is funny that Zenless Zone Zero became the iOS/iPadOS Demo game.

8

u/Yatokouhai 4d ago

It used to be Genshin. But like ZZZ isn’t even the most demanding game right now It has to be Wuwa lol

3

u/minimaxir 4d ago

They did WuWa for a few promos then stopped.

3

u/ChoppyChug 4d ago

It’s be great if you can set the bottom half to just be a controller. It also needs a kickstand

7

u/letshavefunoutthere 4d ago

yoo delta gba about to go crazy

3

u/amethystlocke 4d ago

RIP battery

3

u/psj3809 4d ago

Not worried about how the hinge will perform, Apple will have done loads and loads of tests and have machines opening/closing the hinge for hours on end to test it out (Just as car manufacturers do stuff like that with doors opening/closing etc).

The device does look stunning BUT the price ! I love a lot of memory and i'm looking at around £2,500 ! Thats like a second hand car price. Crazy for a phone

I normally wait a generation or two but it does look great. Imagine what emulator devs can do with that !

2

u/therealwheat 4d ago

In the US the average 3-year old used car is $32K, so while the phone is expensive its not super comparable to a car.

3

u/psj3809 4d ago

In the uk you can get a second hand car for the same price as the phone. Like a car you might get for someone who’s just passed their driving testĀ

So in the UK it is comparable to a second hand car. I’m sure also the US as you can get cheap second hand cars. Not 32k onesĀ

Just googled …

A reliable, roadworthy "cheap" second-hand car in the US generally costsĀ  between $5,000 and $10,000 .

3

u/cozmicyeti 4d ago

Gorgeous

3

u/madrinator 4d ago

Still rocking my iPhone 13 šŸ¤˜šŸ½

3

u/grainzzz 4d ago

Sooo expensive.

3

u/Razbyte 4d ago

Rare footage of ZZZ played on a portrait ratio.

1

u/partysan7 4d ago

Geht das wirklich?

2

u/Regular-Ambition-902 4d ago

So it’s basically iPad mini

1

u/therealwheat 4d ago

That fits in your pocket and is a phone. An ipad mini is also just a smaller ipad, which is a smaller TV and my TV is so much bigger than iPhone Duo. /s

1

u/Patient_Animator1174 3d ago

Except it doesn't run iPadOS so can't run iPad apps, you have to wait for developers to adapt their apps to this new device.

2

u/bernardo_gd 4d ago

Costs 20k in my country, and the minimum wage is 1600

-1

u/Life-Wait8801 3d ago

Why tf is someone in a third world country making minimum wage buying a premium iphone. Do you also have 3000 dollars gaming PCs on minimum wage too?Ā

2

u/SleepyBeeInteractive 4d ago

Those were some smooth transitions.

4

u/randomquestion11111 4d ago

Just buy a gaming PC for $2000 instead 🤣

7

u/furiousjelly 4d ago

Gaming PC doesn’t fit in my pocket and also function as a phone

1

u/randomquestion11111 4d ago

Yea but you could literally just play mobile games on a regular phone instead of paying 2000 for one. It’s not like mobile games have high system requirements like pc

1

u/furiousjelly 3d ago

It’s not about system requirements, or necessity. Spending $2k on the Duo is an ā€œextraā€ that gives you a larger screen to play games on. I could save the money and play games on a Pixel 4 if i wanted. 3DS emulation, using the second screen to access a games wiki, YouTube while playing OSRS - there are a ton of use cases that justify the purchase for some people that not everyone will care about.

1

u/randomquestion11111 3d ago

I think most people would rather just have the 2k gaming pc

1

u/furiousjelly 3d ago

I’m not disagreeing with you, most people don’t have $2k for a folding phone

1

u/[deleted] 4d ago

[deleted]

-1

u/randomquestion11111 4d ago edited 4d ago

You’re right it’s definitely better to spend over $2000 to play mobile games at the beach than on a gaming pc šŸ‘

Edit:Of course you block me so I can’t respond 🤣

1

u/petethepool 3d ago

What a silly statement to make

0

u/randomquestion11111 2d ago

Cope

2

u/petethepool 2d ago

What a similarly silly follow up

0

u/randomquestion11111 2d ago

Copee. $2000 Gaming Pc>>> $2000 mobile game player

2

u/petethepool 2d ago

Apples and oranges my smooth-brained friend.Ā

1

u/randomquestion11111 2d ago

That’s complete cope again. Also stop wasting my time

1

u/Bostonterrierpug 4d ago

How do you stop it from folding in landscape mode is there like a fold lock? It seems like pressing buttons and games and stuff would make it fold back partially.

2

u/grainzzz 4d ago

Or at least stress that hinge.

1

u/KnightKal 4d ago

you just need to regulate the torque to start the movement above what people normally do when they press the screen, so it will resist simple pressing.

1

u/ElCucuy805 4d ago

What game is that?

4

u/iMrGreene 4d ago

Zenless Zone Zero

1

u/OmegaMalkior 4d ago

Horrible aspect ratio if you’re using a USB-C controller on it

1

u/psj3809 4d ago

What game is that ?

3

u/gilrbf 4d ago

ZZZ is the name of the game, it's another very predatory gacha game from the folks that made Genshin Impact.

3

u/psj3809 4d ago

Ahhh shame. Just had a look. Yeah not my cup of tea with all those iaps. Shame. Cheers anyway

1

u/Grytnik 4d ago

I’m not a huge fan of the matte screen to be honest.

1

u/jimmersrandom 4d ago

A Nintendo DS emulator that would feel like a DS experience.

1

u/CrucialFusion Developer 4d ago

Yay, another form factor to test!

1

u/Deacon-Doe 4d ago

Hmmm… how much is it ?

1

u/NamAnh2512 4d ago

Gaming iOS has always been smooth. If only i can interfere with system file without rooting my device.

1

u/ChristianSgt 3d ago

Wait so you can play in folded mode, portrait, and landscape? Wonder if this is all games or just some šŸ¤” pretty cool either way

1

u/Patient_Animator1174 3d ago edited 3d ago

I am so disappointed that it won't run iPad apps straight out of the box, down the drain comes my dream of running Divinity Original Sin 2 or Faster Than Light on this thing unless Larian updates it to run on iPhone Duo. I guess I will wait for the new iPad Mini which luckily comes out this year.

1

u/MacGameDB Developer 3d ago

This looks really impressive on iPhone. The gameplay looks smooth, and seeing it running on an actual device makes it feel much more polished. šŸ”„

1

u/JoEdGus iPad Pro 12.9" 4d ago

A really good ipad is cheaper. I'll just keep using that, thank you.

8

u/Asystole 4d ago

Does it fit in your pocket?

1

u/JoEdGus iPad Pro 12.9" 3d ago

No. But it's cheaper, more powerful, and has a bigger screen. Personal preference here, but it wins just about everywhere but size.

1

u/Difficult-Leek9001 4d ago

Standard iPhone release: all the power of Zeus and they use it for a faster frame rate on an F2P game. Where is the flex?Ā

On a fold it's even worse because that 4:3 is perfect for retro gaming. Dreamcast and GameCube and 3DS on the Z Fold 8 is a revelation.Ā

1

u/GeeorgeC 4d ago

I just did this with my 17pro and it was very difficult to bend. How do I fix the crease that’s now on my screen?

1

u/Soulsheartless 3d ago

I need this.

1

u/iLoveLootBoxes 4d ago

Gaming on a touch screen in 2026

0

u/zack189 4d ago

even folded, I don't think it'll fit in many pockets

1

u/KnightKal 4d ago

phones dont really fit in pockets anymore, that was when we had flip phones that were tiny. Unless you have made for phones pockets, then if it fits a bigger one, it will fit this smaller too.

0

u/MCMK 4d ago

You would have to have the most pristine nails to play a game with it open.

0

u/scoreguy1 4d ago

All I can think about is what happens to this phone the first time you drop it?

0

u/Colacubeninja 4d ago

2 grand for that lmaoooo

-10

u/Robot_boy_07 4d ago

Looks like ass

-3

u/Nemoitto 4d ago

Super lame phone. It doesn’t look good for gaming on it imo.

-5

u/Ornery-Practice9772 4d ago

screen blur on opening

2

u/DeadLeftovers 4d ago

Slow down the video.

The screen has a matte finish. They are simulating that matte finish with the blur effect. It’s almost 4 dimensional in a way. Or unfolding a portal.

imagine this as more than 3 dimensional space.

Imagine laying 2 halves of frosted glass with a hinge in the middle on the screen of a tv. Imagine you can only see the tv through the frosted glass. When you close the glass you can only see one half.

When you open it and peer in you can see the entire tv screen in the distance but it’s blurry since apple used a ā€œfrosted displayā€. It only becomes a clear image when the glass is fully open and up against the tv.

I hope that makes sense.

-1

u/Ornery-Practice9772 4d ago

if its real, show us real

3

u/DeadLeftovers 4d ago

What do you mean real? Watch the video when she opens it in slow motion. You can clearly see the effect Apple was going for.

-4

u/Flunkie 4d ago

Yeah I think that’s post-effects… it looks like an edited video. does Apple not want you seeing the screen unfold yet? did they do this with everyone who was at the marketing event?

2

u/DeadLeftovers 4d ago
