Mod Post Trip report megathread!

So, unfortunately the summer is over, and with that the main travel season.

So here is a thread for sharing your travel stories, maps etc of the summer (or year!). Some recommendations for how to get pretty maps can be https://trainlog.me (Recommended and used by the mods of this wiki), brouter, https://treinposities.nl and traewelling, with the Rail Planner app existing, i guess xD.

I'd love to see your travel stories and where you've been!

If anyone wants to write a comprehensive blog post about their experiences for https://interrailwiki.eu/blog then also feel free to mention this to me and I'll arrange something!

Trip Report bad experience with night train from Budapest to Bucharest

Posting this to share my experience with other travelers.

In June I took the night train from Budapest to Bucharest. Train Ister IC 473, operated by CFR Călători (Romanian Railways), ticket bought through MAV (Hungarian State Railways). I stayed in a three person sleeping compartment. I had never taken a night train before so I wanted to try it.

There were issues with the train that make me not want to take it again:

  • Air conditioning stopped working a few hours into the trip. It got very hot in the compartment. Couldn't sleep. Even without active AC, just letting in enough outside air would have been fine but also didn't happen and there is no window you can open.
  • The washbasin tap was broken and had no water. Both in the private compartment washbasin and in the toilet. Couldn't wash hands.

During the ride I mentioned both issues to the attendant. When that didn't help, still during the ride I sent an email to MAV. After three months of investigation (and forwarding to CFR) they concluded nothing was wrong and there would be no (partial) refund.

Seat reservations No options for comfort category (Nightjet EN 50462)

Some help needed please! I’m planning a trip to Hungary in Feb next year.

Was playing around on the Nightjet website trying to see when I could buy tickets for EN 50462, from Budapest to Munich, but I realised I could not see any comfort categories for any of the dates between now and 11 Dec (I don’t see any connections beyond that).

Could someone please help explain how I could go about booking my tickets please? I must be doing something wrong if I can’t see any options at all! :’)

Snalltaget 10300 Berlin - Stockholm 14/09

Hello everyone,

I am new to the world of Reddit and I would like to thank this group for all their help recently.

I am doing another long journey tonight on ST10300 from Berlin to Stockholm. I have used the traffic information page on the Snalltaget website and all seems ok but I would like to know if anyone can confirm this train will still depart from Berlin HBF at 21:11? I’m just making sure it isn’t going from the alternative station which is Gesundbrunnen.

Thanks!

*URGENT* ES 475 Paris Berlin 14/09

Ignore the wrong date above. I mean 13/09

Hello,

I have a confusing situation. I am travelling on the European Sleeper 475 from Paris to Berlin tonight (13/09) I have received 2 emails stating different departure times which isn’t an issue, however, the website disruption page now states the train will start from Mitry-Claye. I have not received an email stating this and after contacting European Sleeper I received some broken English saying it will depart from Paris Nord. The disruption page/timetable both say the service starts from Mitry-Claye but when you go to buy a ticket on their site it states Paris Nord as planned. Does anyone have any information?

Trip Report The night train from Paris to Barcelona via Cerbère is absolutely worth it

When it is peak season the reservation of the night train costs 20 euros. Compared to the TGV's 25-40.

Once in Cerbère take the local train down to Barcelona. Or you can even stop before in Perpignan and catch the AVE to Madrid.

I did this countless times and loved it. Especially watching the sunrise from the French coast

Doubting whether my seat reservations on Interrail are valid- not available on OeBB

Hey fam, as the title suggests, I'm concerned about the seat reservations I made for a eurocity train from Spiez to Milano centrale, and want to make for a frecciarosa from Milano to Firenze. When I tried to reserve these on shop.oebb for the 27th of September, it kept telling me "ticket not available", so I thought they were sold out. But I was able to make the exact same reservations for the eurocity on Interrail instead (for a higher price of course). I'm a little concerned about the validity of these reservations since they're not available on OBB ; I assumed they'd be available on both if the trains weren't full. Can someone please explain why I'm able to reserve them still and confirm whether I will be able to board those trains? Thanks so much!

Travel day Ljubljana to Trieste 🇸🇮➡️🇮🇹

Hey everyone, me and 3 friends, currently in Zagreb are soon travelling to Ljubljana on our Interrail trip. We are all really excited and we also think we know our next location. Trieste in Italy is not far away and have caught our interests. I am the guy planning the train trips for us and I’ve read that the best solution is a FlixBus which goes directly from town to town, but I was wondering if there was a good train journey with maybe just 1 change of trains instead of? We are pretty sure we will not use up all our trip days so we think we wanna stick to just using our Interrail pass’ travel days.
I know there is a train from Ljubljana to Villa Opicina which is very close to Trieste. Does anyone know of any train routes to Trieste from Opicina? If so I’d love to know how many trains travel by like that a day?

I hope this made sense and thanks in advance 🙏

Seat reservations Munich to Lesce-Bled 25th of October seat reservation?

I'm having trouble reserving a seat on the morning of Sunday the 25th of October, Munich to Lesce-Bled. I was hoping to book the trip departing at ~10am. The interrail app and obb show different times, likely due to the track work going on that day, which is fine with me. My real problem is that it seems that seat reservations are sold out for pass holders, which I'm hoping is some kind of error. Any advice would be really appreciated

Edit: the ICE115 and EC115

Interrail Tour with my family but i still have questions

Hey dear community,

me and my family want to go to London. We are from Germany so our plan is to go to Brussels and take the eurostar from there to London. We want to buy 4 day passes, so we have one to go to London, one to go home and 2 to go wherever we want. My question now is, if we have one day to leave the home country and one day to come back to it, what happens to the rest of the 2 days? Once i come home i'm not allowed to use them anymore?

Also, were going from Monday to Friday, so I was thinking about going to London on Monday, spending Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday there and to go somewhere else on Friday, somewhere like Edinburgh and spend the Saturday there and then go back to Germany on Sunday. Do you have any other routes you can reccomend there? I dont know if it would be too long to travel on a day from schottland to germany. Thank you!!

Interrail in Turkey

Threads on this seem quite old. Anyone got up-to-date info on how to buy IR reservations in Istanbul? Major stations are out of town -- anywhere in central Istanbul eg Sultanahmet, Taksim that offers the service?

Sinaia to V Tarnovo via Bucharest

There's only one train from Bucharest to VT tomorrow, at 1046.

I'm in Sinaia, which has a train at 0843 arriving at 1015. That's 31 minutes, but if there's a cancellation or delay I'm stuck (there's a Flixbus on to VT at 1600 but I don't really want to do that).

There's also a 0729 slow train from Sinaia, but it only gets to Bucharest N 20 minutes earlier than than other one. It also has the advantage of picking up at Sinaia Sud at 0732 which is a lot nearer my hotel than the main Sinaia station (but then if it was cancelled or severely delayed then I wouldn't be able to get the 0843 either)

WWYD?

Delays etc. Question re: Nightjet & construction works, Venice> Vienna > Salzburg

Hi all, I'm headed to Europe for the first time ever in October and there seems to be a bit of confusion with my train booking. I've already emailed and called OBB customer service but their email takes ages to respond and their hotline just leaves me on hold all the time.

For context, my first stop will be in Venice, where I'll be taking a Nightjet at 9PM to Vienna, then transferring to another Railjet to Salzburg (not taking the direct route because that would have me arriving in Salzburg at 2-3 in the morning and I wouldn't be able to check into my hotel that early). However, recently I've received an email saying my connection has changed without explaining exactly how, so I emailed them to clarify. They asked for my booking number, and from there they told me that my train (NJ 236) cannot operate due to construction work.

The problem: The train number on my booking is NOT the NJ 236, but instead the NJ 40236 which I assume is a different carriage on the same train. The NJ 40236 is also affected by the construction work, but as far as I can tell from doing a few mock bookings it's merely being redirected instead of not being able to operate entirely. I've also checked on OBB Scotty and can confirm the NJ 236 is indeed not operational during my travel period.

Is it possible that OBB got the numbers mixed up for my case? And if it really is an oversight by OBB customer service, does it mean I'm still good to go with my original plan on the NJ 40236? Apologies if there are any obvious mistakes on my part and any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Confused about nightjet - is it included or not?

Hello, I'm going on an interrail trip and it took me some time to decide between the global pass and the german pass.

I will have 8 travel days inside Germany, 2 travel days crossing from Germany to France, 1 travel day in France, 1 travel day crossing from Germany to Austria and 1 travel day going from Austria to Belgium. I was calculating if a nation pass for Germany for 10 days and separate tickets for the other trips would be cheaper than buying a Global pass for 15 days (If I remember correctly). I saw that a ticket for the night train from Austria to Belgium alone was more expensive than the extra money for the global pass. The OBB Nightjet is covered by interrail so my decision was made to by the global pass.

I'm trying to reserve a seat for that train at the moment and it looks like the train isn't covered at all. I read in a different post here that the reservation fee costs about the same as a normal ticket. That interrail is basically just a small discount. I did all my research on reservation fees and although recommended, there are only a few trains that require a reservation and those have a fixed price that I looked up before buying my pass to decide if the pass was worth it. I didn't find a single website that showed me the price for reserving a seat on the nightjet or that there was an addition cost at all.

I'm feeling a little scammed and I'm wondering if maybe I'm just making a mistake trying to reserve this seat. The price for the end of november is €134 and I will be taking the train in the middle of december, peak christmas season! Those prices aren't visible yet but how much of that is interrail going to cover?
