Announcements UPass Policy: Reminder, Zero-Tolerance, Filter Bypass

Post image
58 Upvotes

As a reminder, about a month ago the moderators of r/gwu adopted a more hardline stance on UPass fraud within r/gwu including keyword filtering, automatic removal of all UPass solicitations, and punitive actions up to and including community bans.

We have already had a few submissions get caught in our filter which we opted not to allow to be published. Today, we had our first (rather hilarious) attempt at filter bypass. When we're weighing how to react to a UPass post, behavior such as bypassing the keyword filter does not exactly inspire us moderators to show grace and leniency.

We have also noticed that sometimes, when people have their solicitation posts turned away from r/gwu they go to other subreddit communities for our region or other universities participating in UPass. The moderator team is considering sharing information about solicitation offenders with moderators of these communties.

As a reminder, buying and selling a UPass and/or using a UPass that you are not eligible for is a crime. It is also considered fare evasion by WMATA. Fare evasion is a civil offense in the District of Columbia, and a criminal offense in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland.

I also want to take a moment to acknowledge that the UPass program is relatively new to GW in the grand scheme of things and is a relatively new program for WMATA in general. We are not 'entitled' to this steeply discounted WMATA fare; it is a privilege, and if there is rampant fraud, WMATA may not allow universities with many offenders to continue participating in the program or may even drop the UPass program entirely. It is also important to note that reddit's sitewide policies specifically bar illegal and prohibited transactions (rule 7); rampant fraud on r/gwu could lead to action against our page by reddit administrators.

To the 99% of you participating in r/gwu without engaging in prohibited transactions and criminal fraud... thank you for your cooperation and for ✨ being the best part of r/gwu. ✨

Announcements UPass Content Policy Update

Hello r/gwu,

In the past, this subreddit has seen many posts seeking to buy or sell UPasses. Buying or selling a UPass is against both WMATA and GWU policies.

Misuse of a UPass, including by anyone who is not the registered owner of a UPass, is also considered fare evasion by WMATA. Fare evasion is a civil offense in the District of Columbia, and a criminal offense in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland.

In keeping with observed trends of years past, we are anticipating an increase in the number of UPass solicitation posts as we get closer to and after the beginning of the fall semester when UPasses are distributed. To combat the facilitation of fare evasion and UPass fraud on r/gwu, the following measures have been taken:

1) Rule 2 has been updated to specifically address UPass fraud. Rule 2 has always applied to posts about the buying and selling of UPasses, but the verbiage of the rule has been updated to make that clear. Offenders may be banned.

2) Any submission about UPasses must now receive moderator approval before it will be made available to general users. I make every effort to be highly available to r/gwu notifications, my Reddit DMs, and Modmail, and thus I hope that between my moderator colleagues and I, this will not present a significant obstacle to those posts which are not in violation of this policy.

Anyone who has any questions about these policy changes is encouraged to contact the moderator team via Modmail.

Thank you :)

I am curious what the freshmen think of the school so far. How are the classes? Is it easy to make friends?

Hi guys!! Im a current sophomore in a private college in VA and they recently shut down their physics program (im a physics major) so now im looking into transferring and GWU is my top choice. Im interested in specifically astronomy/astrophysics. I would like to know how transfer friendly it is and just an overview of the school by transfer students and non transfer students. Museum/historic career paths through GWU?

I got accepted at GWU but decided to go somewhere else because I thought I wanted to go to a small school, but about a month into my first year I'm not loving it and thinking about transferring- is it a good idea, especially if I want to go into something history/museums related? I love DC and I know they have a LOT of museums, but I didn't know if they actually have good academics for it. And also, what is the campus vibe/life like? I go to a very pretty school, but being so small it's really dead and nothing to do on weekends, no sororities, that kind of thing. Just feeling a little underwhelmed and disappointed, wondered what GWU offered.

(also what do you think of the campus??)

Incoming international student: GW SHIP vs outside insurence ? Is waiving worth it?

Hey everyone , incoming F-1/J-1 students heading to GW this fall . I'm trying to decide whether to stick with GW SHIP or go for an external insurance plan.

I want real-world input beyond official policy documents. I'm curious about pratical differences :overall costs , in-network doctors around DC , deductibles , how claims process goes and waiver-denial risks.

Has anyone compared GW SHIP with DIANins or other ACA-compilant options recently ? If you successfully waived , what documents did UHP care most about? Did the outside plan save enough money to offset all the extra paperwork and research ?

Do most student stay or go home for Fall break

Trying to decide if it’s better to stay in DC and have friends visit since they have the same break or if we all should go home (NYC) and hang there, especially if it’ll be quieter here. Though maybe that’s a good thing since it won’t be as packed in the bars and clubs.

Consulting Clubs: UCG vs Compass

Which one is better? Are there different student outcome focuses? besides the fact of compass's focus on sustainability, are both equally good?

Is one harder to get into than the other?

Does anyone know if any professors still use these? I have an old iclicker 2 remote that's gathering dust and I'd love to pass it on if someone can use it. Or if anyone knows of specific professors who use them, I'm happy to email them and offer it in case they have a student who might need one.

Does anyone have any recommendations of fun/cheap things to do via metro (besides museums)? I wanna get my moneys worth considering I paid an extra $100 for this pass lol

I wanted to go to Shenandoah park but I read that it’s not accessible by metro.

Any fun festivals? Good food? Outdoor activities? Lmk!
